I deliberately don't watch these clips, including Joe Theismann, Gayle Sayers etc. I'm really squeamish about those types of things. Yet, I've seen bodies blown up by explosive devices, and have less trouble with that. I guess it's because I can empathize with  the pain and suffering being felt, but when there is no longer life, there is no pain. Self psychoanalysis might better be left to professionals, but that's my take anyhow.

Just saw Survive and Advance, the ESPN 30 for 30 on the 1983 NC State team and Jimmy Valvano that upset Phi Slamma Jamma in the tournament. Great documentary. Entertaining, informative, emotional. As much as ESPN can screw stuff up in other arenas, these 30 for 30's have been exceptional.

Phi Slamma Jamma. That was a great name. Michigan had the Fab Five Freshman or something about 15 years ago but that was a very lame name. I can't think of any others. But Phi Slamma Jamma is a classic.

My favorite is The Slaughter House Five referring to the 1972 UCLA Bruins led by Bill Walton who went 30-0 with an average winning margin of almost 30 points.  Another one I can remember was the Doctors of Dunk referring to the Louisville Cardinals led by Darrell "Count Dunkenstien" Griffith.  There also was Danny and the Miracles referring to the Kansas Jayhawks and Danny Manning.

Good names, BWH.

I just found out that the Fab Five played 25 years ago, not 15.  25 years...  sigh.

Split the difference, and you've finally got it! ;)  The Fab Five were freshmen in the 1991-92 season, making the national title game both that year and the next, before Chris Webber went pro.

Of course, to the NCAA, they never existed.  The scandal that resulted from Webber's (and some other players) dealings with a drug-dealing money-laundering 'booster' resulted in the stripping of those records, and the fall of Michigan into the wilderness for many years.  Only this year have they finally come back to national competitiveness - my guess is they will beat Syracuse, but Louisville will be a really tough challenge.  (Of course, if Wichita State somehow 'shocks' L'ville, they've got a different challenge - 95% of the population will root for the Cinderella! ;))

The ESPN 30for 30 on the Fab Five was great. Jalen Rose could talk smack with the best of them.....BUT (and this is important for all smack talkers) he could back it up on the court. He is a great basketball analyst for ESPN currently- I enjoy listening to his view of an upcoming game or dissecting a game recently played.

And to clarify: Jalen Rose was definitely NOT implicated in the Ed Martin scandal.  (The only other Fab Five guy about whom there were even rumors was Juwan Howard, and I don't recall that there was ever any definite evidence.)  The other players implicated were a year or two later.

That would be Chris "Time Out" Webber.

As talented as the Fab Five was I tend to agree with Bob Knight on the topic.

It will be interesting to see how Gary (and Kurt) will handle the quarterback position.

I have high hopes for this coming season for two reasons:

1. I'm a hopeless fanatic for the Johnnies and have no sense of judgement or proportion when weighing their opportunity.

2. Those 10 suited practice sessions for the Canadian trip.  That's a lot of extra practice and it will have to make an impact.

Speaking of the Canadian trip, does anyone know if it will be an actual game or will be instead be an orchestrated scrimmage?

It is my understanding that it will be a controlled scrimmage.
The Canuck sized filed will be a challenge  ;)

Generally those things are real games. SJU could play a controlled scrimmage as a spring game in its 10th practice, though.
