This excerpt, from the book The Hero of Heroes, in Sports Illustrated was written by John Rosengren, SJU '86.  Throughout the summer, Rosengren has been traveling across the country to tell the story of "Hank Greenberg, the Hero of Heroes." He'll be making a stop in Collegeville on Monday, Oct. 14.

  ;D

Thanks, to be honest I have seen the Tommie's only twice last year, but they were pretty impressive but from what I remember their secondary was tested but the Tommie's still dominated... I will be in attendance for all the 2013 games for the Tommie's next year, home and away...! Thanks for the welcomes from all of you...I look forward to the banter.  What up with the Tailgate rules at UST?  seems pretty strict?  No adult beverages or load noise??? Really??? Not saying I am going to party like a SJU Fan or anything!...really not sure if a sad mix of sexual frustration, alcoholism, and loneliness is a good mix before a game!!!... just thought I would chuck that out there just seemed appropriate from what i was told ;D

the Collegeville social scene--a sad mix of sexual frustration, alcoholism, and loneliness--they'll label you elitist.
I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you weren't truly trying to make light of addiction issues. Just a not well thought out attempt at humor.

Show me an 18-22 year old guy (Johnnie or Tommie) that says he has never had a moment of sexual frustration and I will show you a LIAR!  :o Unless you are trying to insinuate that Tommie girls are slutty! In that case, I take offense on their behalf!!! :P

+K to AlmostEx! It is good to have a line and the courage to speak up when you feel it has been crossed. :)

Are there any primary/elementary school educators out there?  I had a WTH moment last night while listening to #3 (who is in the second grade) do her reading homework.  Normally she's pretty enthusiastic about her reading so I don't really pay attention and just listen when she starts stumbling on words.  But last night she was really slack so I was giving her more attention to keep her concentration up.  And then she reads this page...

What the heck?

Judging from UST's twitter feed, it looks like TJ Woodrow will be playing center this season. TJ will be a solid replacement for James.

A fine product of Grant's system.  Solid recruit.  Just a sophomore correct?

TJ will be a junior this year. He started as a freshman back in 2011.

"So true.  However, if your language is too formal for the Collegeville social scene--a sad mix of sexual frustration, alcoholism, and loneliness--they'll label you elitist.  But getting back to football, my bet is that six games in we'll see UST at 6-0 and SJU at 1-5.  Any thoughts?"

Even if in jest, which I doubt, I suggest you walk away from the keyboard and seek perspective on (in your) life.  The above is truly disgusting, and I will stop just short of asking Pat to remove the offending post.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about...seems like a rather fair assessment to me.  I see SJU'd season unfolding as follows:

Win: UW-River Falls  Agree
Loss: UW-Eau Claire  Definite Possibility
Loss: St. Thomas  Agree
Loss: Concordia-Moorhead Disagree-Concordia loses a lot of Seniors. Close game, but I think SJU wins
Loss: St. Olaf Disagree-I have way more confidence in the talent and coaching changes at SJU that at Olaf
Loss: Augsburg Definite Possibility
Win: Carleton
Win: Gustavus Adolphus
Win: Hamline
Loss: Bethel

Do any of these seem way off?

The only ones I'd say are way off would be Concordia and Olaf being confident losses. They could also definitely beat UWEC. All that to say, we're speculating before a single snap is even taken in camp.

I'm with Pat, and I think he might be referencing my earlier post. I think the floor for SJU the first 6 games is 2-4, 5-1 the ceiling. 4-2 is my bet, losses to UST and Augsburg.

MIAC players on the D3football.com Preseason All America Team:

First Team
TE   Adam Carl, Sr., Augsburg
LB   Seth Mathis, Sr., Bethel

Second Team
LB    Tremayne Williams, Sr., St. Thomas
P      Garrett Maloney, Sr., St. Thomas

A few thoughts.

 • As strong as the MIAC is right now, this seems like lower representation than we've had in the past (NB: I didn't actually look it up). Maybe we're under-represented. Maybe there's just been a significant improvement in your 'average' MIAC starter. Maybe both.
 • I applaud Pat, Keith & Co. for keeping their teams to 11 men per side of the ball. The proliferation of positions is silly. Make the teams a legit honor. They do it the right way, having 4 'teams' named All America at the end of the season. This recognizes the exclusivity of the award as well as the fact that D3 has at least double the amount of players of most other divisions with two or three teams.
 • I expect we'll see a few more Tommies (gag) at the end of the season. They have a lot of young talent, some of which was hurt last year.
 • To any MIAC player pumped (or disappointed) to (not)make the Preseason Team. You haven't earned or missed out on an honor yet. The real one is after the year. So don't get an inflated ego, simply recognize the spotlight is on you, now do the most with it. And stop reading this board, every minute you're on here listening to a bunch of chubby middle aged guys pontificate is a minute you should be watching film, lifting and just soaking up the finite amount of time you get to be a college football player.

Finally, here's who I'd put on my MIAC watch list. Guys not named Preseason who I think have a chance to be on one of the teams come seasons end:

Asp, St. Olaf, WR - Needs to play up to his potential. New coach and new QB are his biggest hurdles
Scott, Augsburg, QB - If he makes the improvement most guys make in year two as a starter, he could be scary good this year. Shouldn't get denied a spot just because he's a soph
Hallstrom, Bethel, WR - He's a talent. Physical, imposing, athletic with a great set of hands. Peterson having a year under his belt only makes him a greater threat.
Pitera, UST, OLB - He'll be one of the leaders on a great D
Ferrazzo, UST, WR - All the talent, tons of speed, solid QB. Could have a breakout year.
Braddock, UST, RB - Maybe still a year away from AA honors, but the potential is there
Insert Name, UST, DL - They've got some hosses up front. Some big names graduated, I'm guessing one of the new guys makes a name for himself

Who'd I miss?

hazzen,

Nice post I can't disagree, since I am new to the conference but seems very logical.  I have heard from other conferences and coaches that the MIAC is an up and coming conference and various coaches were strongly opposed and upset, mostly for show! That any recruit would consider a school up north over a more local one.  Also I think the talent level is getting stronger in the MIACC and the style of Play is definitely having an effect on potential all Americans from the MIAC getting recognition, especially on defense from what I have seen, is the amount kids getting time and the systematic rotation of personal thought the game makes it hard for the voters to really identify with just one Player...Just a thought I could be in left field. :-\

OZ, Please turn the page! ;D

Win: UW-River Falls Win

Win: UW-Eau Claire  Could go either way however I would pick SJU.  Johnnies beat UWEC last year and I would bet money that SJU is the more improved team going into the season.

Probable Loss: U$t. Thomas UST has to be the favorite...however 3 straight wins over SJU and everybody shoveling dirt on the Johnnies  and it being a rivalry game make this a dangerous game for U$T...Ramler also has coached against and beaten Caruso while at Carleton.  I'll gladly let U$T believe they've got this one in the bag.

Win: Concordia-Moorhead  I agree w/ Hazzbeen-"Concordia loses a lot of Seniors. Close game",...also it's Homecoming for the Jays...I think SJU wins

Win: St. Olaf I agree w/ Hazz again...battle of coaching staff changes...Johnnies have more talent returning than Olaf.

Probable Loss: Augsburg Toss up...probably a loss...however when SJU played Augsburg last year they were in a tailspin...injuries and and zero confidence....I think by the sixth game of the season the Johnnies will be battle hardened and ready to challenge the Auggies

Win: Carleton

Win: Gustavus Adolphus

Win: Hamline

Probable Loss: Bethel This game depends a lot on what both teams are playing for...playoff bids could be in the balance.

My prediction for SJU is at least 7-3...maybe 8-2

Nice analysis hazbeen.  Especially on Pietera.  He's a big disrupter.   And, his mother is a long time friend.   :)

Only thing I would add is:

Insert Name, UST, OL

National Champions: 1963, 1965, 1976, 2003

Pat Coleman

Augsburg safety Hakeem Bourne-Mcfarlane was another player who was in consideration late in the game.
