Umm, really  ???

No, I don't refer to players as 'perennial football powers.' And when I read criswyly's comments, I don't think he does either. Which was precisely my point. I think he's saying he doesn't recognize any of the cali players that attended one of the perennial football power schools.

I took the the clause "perennial football powers" to be modifying the schools, not the players.

Your response and others indicated that you were proving him wrong by listing several programs that were indeed quality. I maintain that his point seemed to be, and at the very least could be read to be, that it wasn't that he didn't recognize quality programs, but rather that he didn't recognize any players from those programs.

Does that mean they aren't good players. Not for a second. Plenty of All MIAC players were unheralded recruits coming out. But just because they played for really good high school programs also doesn't automatically mean they'll be good in the MIAC.

This really isn't a big deal. Except that you jumped all over his initial assertion (I.e. 'how dare he say our recruits don't come from the Eden Prairies of California'). When in reality it looks like it was your reading comprehension that was the issue all along.  :-* ;)

Good grief.  This is the silliest pissing match I've ever been in.  I do see that I likely misread criswyly's statement, but please show were I "jumped all over" him.  You certainly read a lot into a plain statement about two schools ("Loyola and Bishop Amat are traditional powers from the LA area").  I'm surprised.

As for the issue, I suspect the only California kids anyone in MN (or elsewhere, including most in CA) is likely to know about as being good players are kids being recruited to D1 programs, and I don't think that's what we're talking about here.  There are plenty of good players out here who can play teams in the MIAC who are not being recruited to D1 and will not be known to those who follow the MIAC.  The only ones I know a thing about are the seniors who were on the team when my son was there.

I was thinking of some posters from the past that we haven't seen in awhile and I looked into Janesville Flash. He was last active in February of this year but hasn't posted since 2011. I remember he had some eye problems so stayed off the computer.

Anyway, he was always quick with the jokes, and here's one from one of his last posts:

Last night I was sitting on the sofa watching TV when I heard my wife's voice from the kitchen.

"What would you like for dinner, my love? Chicken, Beef or Lamb?"

I said, "Thank you, I'll have chicken."

She replied "You're having soup, asshole. I was talking to the dog."

Really, I've been in much dumber arguments personally. But that probably says more about me and my stubborn Dutch personality  ;D

And I don't disagree for a second that some of those kids can play and excel in the MIAC. IMO, there's a lot of untapped talent in places like Florida, Texas, California, etc. Guys that get overlooked by the DI schools, aren't aware of how good DIII is and slip through the cracks.

I realize the Pierre Garcons and Fred Jacksons of the world are rare. But I personally think there are a number of guys just a notch below them who would be outstanding DIII players, but never get recruited and end up playing intramural softball in college at places like UT.

Yes, that is a normal SJU roster.  And in regards to 40 times, I've always been a bit suspect of SJU's electronic system.  It generally records pretty slow times for guys.  John never made returning starters run a 40; I don't know if Gary has changed that.

If SJU is actually using an electronic system that explains a lot about the times. They are far more accurate than handheld 40 times. And more accurate means the times are slower...typically by as much as .2 seconds. So if a freshman DE ran an electronic 4.7, that's actually pretty impressive. A lot of those 4.3 and 4.4 times that get thrown around are due to coaches reacting slowly on the start and getting excited (or just wanting to see a fast time) at the finish.

Same thing happens in at lot of HS track meets. Guys post super fast times at local meets with handheld watches. And then at the state meets, against the better competition and on better surfaces (both of which should translate into faster times), most run slower.

Electronic just doesn't lie. I will say though, back in the day, I ran sub 4.4. And my Grandma's cataracts and arthritis weren't even that bad yet!  8-)

What do you all think of UST's new scoreboard? Maybe it's the angle, but the masonry seems to lack symmetry.

I don't know how you can live with that.

Even if the electronic system is slow, the fastest player was a defensive end. According to the article, he was a junior. Thus, that would indicate that the entire team likely ran the 40. That is not a good sign.

Even if that's the case why wood the Coach release that information to the press it sure doesn't help! I was surprised to see that in press. But I will tell you this the 40 yard dash is overrated, but it is a great measurement of athletic ability.

If they're doing it as in the past, returning players (at least those who played) typically don't have to run the 40.  I have no idea what is done now or who ran.

Wow got really quite on the board!  Probably because the Johnnies can only type as fast as they can run ;D ;D ;D

SJU doesn't need silly things like speed, weight training, full contact practices, shiny facilities, girls...they have "Johnnie Magic."  ;D

Oz, I'm pretty sure he got this part wrong.

No, he was right.  Johnnies don't need girls.  Girls need Johnnies.  ;)

Touchdown Tommy, snoop dawg and that Ole from Texas all wrapped into one.  And he's a Tommie to boot.  I don't need a Christmas present now.

I guarantee you that Ryan Hoag's 40 time was way faster than Blake Elliott's.  I take them with a grain of salt.

Yeah, but only Hoag was able to have a multi-season pro career  ::)

You forgot to mention Mighty Royal.  I miss Mighty Royal.  I miss Flash, too.  At least now we have Chicago Tommie.  CT reminds me of a guy from Texas whose son was recruited to play QB at Illinois College a few years back.  He announced, Texas style, that the Blueboys were gonna take no hostages, and his son was going to lead them.  Pat will remember.  Unfortunately, he didn't last, but I think CT may be here for a while, just to make Oz happy if nothing else.
