... but Caruso's speech patterns remind me of the telemarketing trainer who belittled me when I told him I was quitting after few days on the job and then made me go into the parking lot with him, where he proceeded to taunt me by showing off his "Beamer," pointing out it was something I could never achieve because of my loser attitude.

Well, was he right?  ;)

As I sit here at another job I don't like, refusing to eat the catered food that comes every Monday because it's the same Italian place as the previous 378 weeks and by this point just the sight of their pizza makes me want to vomit, not to mention the smell, I can say that...yes, he was right. I can't buy a Beamer and I can't play free safety for the Tommies.

But one day I'll get one, drive it back to Minnesota, track that guy down and run into his in the parking lot.

Survey Says? Beamer Drivers are Jerks.

I had a boss with an attitude like that once.  He was a building contractor, he told my friend that he would never drive a nice Mercedes like he had because he only knew how to work hard, not smart.  My friend pointed to his 78 F-150 with the 35 inch tires and 6 inch lift kit and said, No but my truck can turn your Mercedes into scrap iron.  The boss left us alone after that.

Anyway, my reading last night has me thinking that things could be good this year: discipline, intensity, commitment. It's all you need. I know we are extremely unlikely to win the conference but I bet this team will win the hearts of the Johnnie faithful for Fasching.

This goes for the coaching staff as well. I know that Damien has been working, recruiting Nebraska Catholic High Schools for the past couple of years, with little to show for it....until this year he gets 3 incoming Freshmen. The commitment & intensity has paid off. The results are unknown, but the effort is shown. The California scene is starting to bear some fruit. I know Ramler had recruited Arizona when at Carleton and he has 5 incoming Freshmen from Arizona. I have no idea if these kids will be starters,All Conference or simply members of the team but the fact that someone took the time to contact these kids shows a step up in the recruiting area that has been missing in the past. I believe that having 3 guys on the road- Gary,Damien & Kurt has helped this year's recruiting diversity. Perhaps next year Brandon will be able to hit the road also (any word if he will continue to coach wrestling?).
As Oz noted, it's unlikely that they will win the MIAC this year, but they will improve on the 5-5 mark from last year. They could have been 7-3 last year and I have a gut feeling they will be 7-3 or better this year. The more revealing storyline will be if they are competitive to the end in every game-keeping the losses to 7 points or less. If so, this will build the character & confidence of this group of Sophomores & Juniors for the 2014 season.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

With experience, and a little luck staying healthy, the WR and RB positions should be much more consistent start to start than last year I'm guessing.  With that in mind VT, do you think O'Connell carries the ball as much this year as he did last?  In other words, is the offense at its best when he is running the ball over a dozen times a game (as he was last year) or was that a product of an inconsistent target and backfield?

Nice Q&A session with Coach Caruso. This season has me excited! Just booked my ticket back to Minnesota for the Tommie/Johnnie game. Should be fun.

BS: When you talk about the season to players, do you talk about a championship run or do you talk about just getting better?
GC: Both. Certainly you can't put the cart before the horse. We start with the logistics of how we're actually going to work. But we're not going to be shy or afraid of mentioning what our hopes and dreams are. From the day we got here, it was to win the national championship and we said that five years ago and far be it for me to eliminate that from our verbiage now. But we have to be very clear in understanding that we don't control that. We control our work.

I think Caruso meant to use the word vocabulary.  The use of verbiage is hysterically ironic, especially if you follow his quotes from the last 6 years.

Verbiage: Speech or writing that uses too many words or excessively technical expressions.

Can't argue with the guy's results, but Caruso's speech patterns remind me of the telemarketing trainer who belittled me when I told him I was quitting after few days on the job and then made me go into the parking lot with him, where he proceeded to taunt me by showing off his "Beamer," pointing out it was something I could never achieve because of my loser attitude.

Does he always talk like that?

OzJohnnie

sfury, ignore his car and sleep with his girlfriend instead.  Remember that in a game of chicken the guy with a loser attitude always wins.  And a psychotic. He tends to do well too.

So the account is protected. Exactly what kind of Caruso speak are they trying to keep out of the wrong hands. I'm sure St Glenn isn't posting to the account. There's no way he'd be able to fit one thought into 140 characters.

Boys of Fall

105, I think 7-3 is realistic for the Johnnies this year, they might even do better.  In looking at the conference this year it seems Augsburg, BU, and U$T might be better than last year, but the other conference teams might drop off.  If SJU can beat the lower tier teams as they should, and can play well against the top teams (last year's BU game was a good contest), they may surprise this year.  A lot will depend how they come out of the gate, a good start will build confidence and a slow start will add to the frustration.

Yeah, I remember the days when I could eat non-stop.  Those days are gone.  These kids will have a reality check when they are finally out on their own and they realize how much they spend on groceries!  I remember telling myself, "Wow, I must have cost my parents a fortune on groceries."

Tiffs?

I will be heading to Tiffs when I return. It will be glorious.

That's a tough question to answer. I think a lot of it has to do with the maturation of O'Connell himself. I think some of those runs last year can be attributed to him being a young QB. With that said, I think he does benefit from having practically his entire offense returning. They only lost 2 players on offense and the depth at the WR position is pretty solid. The emergence of Braddock in the backfield should also help. But getting back to your question, I think you can't totally eliminate all of O'Connell's carries because that's what makes him a dual threat.  It adds another wrinkle in the offense that opposing teams have to prepare for.  I think Caruso and the crew will continue to take what's given to them. If opposing teams don't prepare for it, I think O'Connell might run the ball until they stop him, especially in short-yardage situations.

St. Thomas has been hamstrung by university policies but will be launching a site with PrestoSports this season.

As for Twitter, UST is not the only program to have a team-run Twitter handle set to private. I'm not one of the chosen few on this one, though, so I don't know what we're missing. :)
