Interesting comment on Frank R's SC Times SJU chat:

QuoteDo you think it is fair that SJU lead on so many recruits and some could have played on another MAIC schools team. Some kids go to these schools thinking they are going to play. Over promise!!!

Maybe the inquisitor is thinking of U$T???

Or thinking of Mitch Hendricks who was a Freshman QB last year who played in certain situations, but has transferred to GAC and is rumored to have a legit shot at starting for the Gusties this season
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Retired Old Rat

Hendricks was a nice change of pace.  I guess when you have kids who don't think they're going to play transferring to other schools and starting, you must have a pretty strong program.  Or Gustavus really sucks.

It's not written on tape.  They're (or for you, there) stick-on letters.  ::)

A little more on the scrimmage on Saturday. Looks like Braddock's injury is minor.

http://www.tommiemedia.com/sports/st-thomas-takes-on-rochester-community-college-in-preseason-scrimmage/

My thoughts on the scrimmage" RCTC was overmatched, especially when they were on offense. UST struggled early, I don't if they were flat, affected by the wind or still gearing up for the start of the season. O'Connell missed on a lot of early throws but also didn't look to run when we was flushed or rolled out of the pocket. He did throw one early pick but otherwise he looked fine. The St Glenn's did have some sloppy play with turnovers, a muffed punt and punt return fumble that RCTC recovered.

Defensively UST did whatever they wanted. RCTC had only a few opportunities to actually throw the ball because of constant pressure. In general the scrimmage went about how you'd expect.

They did run a lot of plays. I figured it would be around 2 to 2.5 hours of action. I left after 3.5 hours and they were still going strong.

I was mildly surprised by the size of the crowd on hand. RCTC had a good contingent and UST had a fine presence but I would estimate there weren't more than 150 spectators. I guess I don't really know what type of crowd I would have expected, it just seemed light.

They played a 2012 game-by-game highlight video on a loop throughout the day on the scoreboard screen. 3 takeaways:
   1) There was no video from the final two minutes of the National Championship game. I figured at least one ankle dive wold have made it.
   2) I didn't realize UST played so many 1-2 score games. I think there were 5 of them. No doubt they've controlled the MIAC lately but on occasion teams have played them well/kept things close, at least according to the final score. And I'm not going to look it up but I'm sure plenty of the better SJU teams had more than their share of close games (2003 UST, Bethel). Point being the margin for a good year/great year can be small....which leads me to point 3.
   3) One of the highlights on the SCOREBOARD VIDEO SCREEN from the SJU game was the near pick 6 INT midway through the 4th QTR last year. I know plays can't be undone but it would have been interesting to see how things could've gone had SJU punched in a TD instead. Even with a TD the Johnnies would still have been down but they had been hanging around most of that game. Clearly UST was tested in close games and probably wouldn't have crumbled but there was a hint of a comeback in the Collegeville air that day. And it's preposterous to put a 5-5 season on a "pick 6" but would things have gone any differently for the rest of the year had SJU been able to staying within a TD or two? Probably not but the air was let out of the Natural Bowl after that play.

Boys of Fall

A lot of the responsibility for kids going to a certain college because of a coach "over-promising" has to go back to the kids and their parents - especially at the D3 level.  I'm not sure of any coach that makes a promise on playing time.  The player always has to perform.  Too many kids and their parents think they're the next great thing coming out of high school, if they were they'd play where they went.  Turns out for a lot of kids they weren't as good as they thought.  Same is true of the kids that transfer down from D1 or D2 programs to play at a D3 school.  This situation seems even more ironic to me for the D3 recruits, if they were really that good coming out of high school they would have been recruited at a higher level.

Have you ever put down a horse?  I have and it quivers and shakes, looking for anything to grasp on to both physically and mentally.  That's what we have here.

Of course I was assisted by our stableboy--a fine young SJU graduate.  At first we questioned whether or not he could be trusted alone with the horses, but he has proven to be the pinnacle of professionalism.  We chalk that up to the exceptional training he received in Collegeville.  Dominus vobiscum...

Kickoff 2013 is live!

I feel like this is our best Kickoff yet: We got some new writers involved, although it would be silly of us to replace Frank Rajkowski. In addition to the 244 team previews we have more than 30 feature stories including two of specific interest to MIAC folks: one about the changing of the guard at the top of the coaching ranks in Division III and another about turnover in the MIAC in general.

This is the only time we ask you guys for money for anything, as I'm sure you realize. It's more than 300 pages of Division III preseason football knowledge and it's the only place you can get all this stuff: Our previews, our rankings, Keith's analysis, the whole 10 yards. http://www.d3football.com/notables/2013/08/get-kickoff-2013
