I might be mistaken, but I think SJU fans (including Duff) have in the past been the most vocal critics of the "Open your program to Page 86" mania and advertising overload at Johnnie games. The difference, of course, being that SJU keeps its whoring to the stadium instead of taking it to the great Minnesota get together where the innocents can be sullied.
St. John's takes tremendous advantages of its opportunities to generate revenues through advertising and promotions.  They've developed a sales competency in this area and they'd be economically foolish to back away from it.  For me personally, I'd prefer they become a bit less intrusive in the game day experience, but that's just me.  Other schools have other opportunities.  For whatever reason, St. Thomas has become really good at capital campaigns.  These campaigns produce nice new buildings, playing fields, public grounds and scholarship money.  For me personally, I'd prefer these buildings were a bit more modest in their appearance but it's not my name on the buildings.  None of this is "whoring" and any organization that would ignore the masses that attend the state fair should maybe rethink their strategies.

Did any SJU alums get the email last week about the capital campaign?

The push is on...it might not be half a billion but the $160 million goal would be nice.

Well, this is great news.  I was hoping he would have a breakout year.

Was he in the mix for some playing time this season? I think he's a freshman. Also, what's he doing playing baseball at this time of the year anyways?

Zim, you are probably thinking of the elder Voshell.  I believe the article is about Rob's younger sibling.

A tradition unrivaled...

Seems Times might have wrong pic and name. Frank is saying it is Rob who is hurt, as is a woman I'm guessing is their mom. Unfortunately. Edit: Times site corrected to Rob.

Just as the Johnnie's season starts, Hawthorn's comes to a close. The Hawks finished the regular season 19-3. Three other times they have finished a season this well and all three times they have won a championship. We're five weeks from the Grand Final. With luck I'll see the Hawks out of a great season just in time to enjoy another MIAC championship from the Johnnies. ;)

Rough news. Unfortunately this type of thing can happen and someone else will have to step up & take his snaps---> elevating their own play at the same time.

Someone asked why he was playing baseball at this time of the year? This is small town Minnesota, these guys play baseball at a pretty decent level in the summer. When Eric Decker played for the Gophers, he played summer ball with the Cold Spring Springers- he was also the starting Center-fielder for the Gophers at that time.

It's odd that he left camp to go play...or didn't come to camp at all.

My guess (and it's only a guess) would be that he was attending training camp & had permission to play in the State Baseball Tournament. Perhaps  Frank R. from the S.C. Times will expand on this in his blog.(I'll Tweet @ Frank & ask)

Very disappointing...I get that it's small town Minnesota and that it was the state tournament...but the football season has started.  Voshell has many years of baseball ahead of him but the window to play college football is small.  The Johnnies are suppose to be in rebuilding mode and Voshell was suppose to be a big part of that.  Personally I don't think he should have been playing in the baseball game.

Agreed-football has to take priority. Not a smart move.

Well, you don't break bones very often playing ball. He wasn't doing extreme sports, which seems designed to cause injury, so I think luck deserves blame more than he does.

sfury

The injury's unfortunate but I don't have any issue with him playing baseball. A game of pickup hoops would be just as likely to lead to something. If he plays it all summer, when there's just as much chance of suffering an injury that could effect the season, and that's okay, why not keep playing once they reach state.

Maybe Duff can help with this: When Blake Elliott was hobbled the first few games of 2001, wasn't that a slowpitch softball injury or something?

Good interview. Gary acknowledged some areas that need improvement and that the staff is addressing those issues. Such as a full time strength & conditioning coach as well as needing to get bigger & quicker on the defensive side of the ball.UST is still on top of the MIAC until someone decides to knock them off.MIAC is a much deeper and much more competitive conference than it was just a few years ago. A team/staff has to keep up or get left in the dust.
