Agreed-football has to take priority. Not a smart move.

Well, you don't break bones very often playing ball. He wasn't doing extreme sports, which seems designed to cause injury, so I think luck deserves blame more than he does.

You may not break any bones, but luck deserves the blame twice in one summer for SJU. I would have thought that after Sean Tillman suffered an injury earlier this amateur baseball season that SJU would have held Voshell out, especially considering the fact that Josh Bungum has been held out of practice with a pulled quad. Fortunately for SJU Bungum returned to practice this week. However, they were pretty close to starting the season with their top two WRs on the sideline.

I guess I'm also a little confused that he was potentially allowed to leave practice to play in an amateur baseball game. I was recruited to play baseball by Coach Denning and that is how I ended up at UST. However, when it was football season I played football. And yes, I missed the state amateur baseball tournament while I was in camp. I simply did not think it was as important as college football. And personally, I don't think it sends a good message to the rest of the players on the team.

How do you hold a non-scholarship, at-will, D3 player out of town team baseball?  The beauty of D3 sports is that, even for really good players, they don't have to control your life.

Again, I'm not sure why a D3 player has to be "allowed to leave practice."  And if you don't get why someone would want to miss practice for a State baseball game, then you just don't understand small-town town team baseball.

I have been watching this conversation from afar.  What if baseball is his number 1 priority and he has a chance to move up in baseball and possibly get signed after he is done with college?  I knew plenty of D3 football players who did not make football their number 1 priority, in fact I know of two when NJCU was JCSC who played basketball and would leave the football team before the season ended to play basketball.  Just because football may be someone else priority doesn't mean it is every football players.  I am sure Duff knew some who put more priority on wrestling over football and if they had to ultimately choose between the two would choose wrestling.

You make a fair point, but I do not believe it applies to this situation. As I mentioned above, Voshell does not play in the Northwoods League. In fact, Voshell does not even play varsity baseball for SJU which is further baffling to me. Thus, I guess I'm confused as to how baseball is his number one priority when he doesn't even play college baseball. There's no possibility of him getting signed after college. However, Josh Bungum does play baseball for SJU but I see he found a way to make it to football practice.

It could just be he enjoys it more.  What most people seem to be missing is he also made a commitment to the baseball team and his teammates there.  Is that any less important than his commitment to his football team and teammates?  Who makes that determination, he needs to, it is part of growing up and setting your priorities.  I was a much better weightman on the track team than I was a firstbaseman and back up catcher.  I would have quit my HS track team in a heartbeat to be a second string JV baseball player because baseball was and still is my first love.

Nice win for the Bison last night.  Anyone know Craig Bohl's story up there?  I wonder how much longer he stays.....been there ten years, is 55, maybe retires or moves up...?

Anyhow, I'm guessing that could be a place that gets Caruso's attention if the job opens up.  Met his wife there and all.

When Deinhart left, Caruso lost a close friend and decision maker at the top.  Will be interesting to see if the new bureaucracy wears him out in the years to come.

I don't know if its ever been said, but looks who's getting the last laugh on the event that was the mass exhile from NDSU to the MIAC.    ;)  ;D

Craig Bohl signed a 5 year contract with a two year rollover in the summer of 2011. By all accounts he has no plans of leaving and has been courted by several FBS schools already. NDSU AD Gene Taylor has impressed upon the alums that there are no immediate plans to go up to the FBS level, but with a 7 - 3 record against FBS competition that conversation will most likely change if NDSU keeps dominating the FCS level. I would imagine the man that manufactured that success would be part of the conversation if NDSU decides to make the jump.

I really don't see Bohl going anywhere and if he was to leave, I don't think Caruso would be a finalist for the job. Not because Caruso wouldn't be more than capable of sustaining success at NDSU, but that NDSU thinks of themselves more as major college football program than a mid-major FCS school. Additionally, Caruso was not part of NDSU's recent success. A lot of people forget the Bison struggled their last few years at the Division II level under Bob Babich. Same reason Craig Bohl would never get the HC job at Nebraska, Lincoln couldn't wait to get rid of him as their DC.

Look at 'em now I guess.

Maybe not at a St. John's practice.

Had to think about it a bit, with the changing of guard, does the practice format change?

You are right, he's the one that has to determine his priorities.  However, when you set your priorities they have implications.  And I'm wondering what message this sends to his SJU teammates.  He's essentially telling them that his amateur baseball team is more important than them.  As long as he's fine with it and can accept the consequences than more power to him.  However, SJU is a team that's at a crossroads and they are looking to him to provide leadership.  Sometimes you have to make personal sacrifices and determine where you're needed more.  And it looks like his baseball team went on to win the state tournament without him.

Exactly.  Not to mention that given the nature of town ball those teammates may very well be relatives, friends, teachers, etc. that he has known his entire life.

All I needed to know about how important town ball is in Minnesota was made clear to me when MLB all-star Terry Steinbach went back to play town ball and in a 35-and-older until age 50 after retiring from the big leagues.

This is unrelated from D3 other than it's about NFL football.  I'm doing one of those Survivor Pools at work but don't really follow the NFL enough anymore to know what picks are good each week.  Anybody know of a good website to get survivor pick info?
