I know it's hard to get, attitude, inflection and nuance from the words written here, but even a dullard would have gotten Oz's
"Bring on the Tommies" quip as sarcasm. Even if you don't know his puckish sense of humor he has displayed here for so long.

No offense.

Cobber defense looked very strong this afternoon. I didn't do enough pre-game prep to have much of an idea as to what Jamestown College was bringing to the table, but Concordia looked more finely tuned than has been typical in the opener and took control early. Should be a strong and fun year in the MIAC.

If he retired today, Steve Johnson would be hands down the 3rd best coach in MIAC history, and it could be argued he was the 2nd best ahead of Christensen (altough Christensen's 2 championships from a far different era probably trumps Coach J). Im not sure why you think he needs to stick around another 10 years to be considered one of the greatest coaches in conference history--- he could win 5 national championshpis in that next 10 years , making a case for him being the all-time best.

I'll have whatever he's having!!  ;D Hopefully an inspired prophetic utterance. But as a Tommie, you'd be more similar to Balaam's donkey than Isaiah  ;D ;)

But yes, Coach J is certainly already one of the MIAC greats.

Imagine if Hamline's new HC, 25 years from now, has multiple conference titles, playoff appreances and approaching 200 wins and has spent the last decade and a half with Hamline positioned as one of the top programs. That sounds just ludicrous. But it's exactly what Coach J did at Bethel. Look no further than him being named MIAC COY in his first season after going 3-6-1! They were so bad before that, and so surprisingly competitive even in their losses that season, that the coaches recognized it with some serious props.

But I 'agree' with miacmaniac, there'd be no better way for him to finish than 5 or so national titles down the home stretch  ;)
I'm figuring 5 for Coach J and 5 for St. Glenn :)  :)

But my point was a lot of things could happen in 10 yrs. I for one dont feel Coach J needs to wait to be in the discussion as one of the greatest coaches in MIAC history.

Nice crowd at O-Shag today. I heard the temp on the turf was over 100 in 2nd half; looked like the heat took a toll on everyone, but UST also had 2nd and 3rd string in for a lot of the 2nd half.  The game wasnt as close as the score (52-7) indicated, IMO. UWEC looks to be young and in rebuilding mode. It will be interesting to see how/if they bounce back next weekend in C-ville.  O'Connell looked solid and the defense was in top form. I hadnt realized it was UWEC's first game in St Paul since 1971 (@ Mac) and only the 2nd meeting ever between UST & the Blu-Golds.

As to how much can happen in 10 years, that is certainly a statement both SJU and UST can agree on  :o

Mr.MIAC

So considering Mount Union's squeaker victory and UST's dominance this week, what do you think...?  UST in 1st place next week?

I don't know Rev - it's an interesting question though. My guess is that not enough folks will switch their votes "just 'cause" - perhaps for any number of reasons. I hear a song being sung from Fiddler on the Roof - "Tradition".  :)

I had the same question.

If I was a voter, I'd have voted Mt. Union #1 in the preseason. But not without a little hesitation, knowing how strong UST is.

After week 1,
Reasons I'd leave Mount there:
They had a blocked punt for a TD called back because they had two #2's on the field at once (dumb mistake, but fluky reason to lose a TD).
They fumbled on the 2 yard line going in for another TD. Those plays would put Franklin in a huge hole before half.
Same guy fumbled opening KO at the Mount 7 setting up a short score for Franklin & triggering their 2nd half surge.
Franklin is a much tougher opponent, especially right out of the gate, than UWEC.
Burke (and I really like O'Connell)

Reasons I'd bump UST up:
They dominated every phase of the game.
They showed tons of talent, and on a hot day, tons of depth. 100 guys playing means 51-7 is probably not indicative of how ugly it could've been.
You could tell which team (between Mount & UST) still had the HC who led them to the Stagg Bowl last year.
They just looked polished and sharp for game 1, especially compared to Mount.

In the end, I'd probably move UST up. Considering UST already had 7 1st place votes, I'm guessing they do actually occupy the top spot when the Week 2 poll is released.

Did they do it in the air?  I'm really worried about air attacks. The Johnnie secondary was not slick. Running is a bit harder to run up the score.

They were very balanced. 297 yards passing and 251 yards rushing.

I was all thirlled and excited about the MIAC's performance tghis wekeend. Then I read this, and suddenly, winning football games wasnt as important as it had been 10 minutes prior:

http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/222828651.html

I dont know the kid, or his family or evsn if they won the game.....all I know is I want to read in a few weeks that Luke Nelson went home, healthy. THAT is something that will be worth celebrating.

It appears that the Augsburg Air Attack has been replaced by the Augsburg Ayrton Attack.  Johnnies running up the score?  Been there, done that, on the field.   #notfun.
