I was all thirlled and excited about the MIAC's performance tghis wekeend. Then I read this, and suddenly, winning football games wasnt as important as it had been 10 minutes prior:

http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/222828651.html

I dont know the kid, or his family or evsn if they won the game.....all I know is I want to read in a few weeks that Luke Nelson went home, healthy. THAT is something that will be worth celebrating.

Thanks for posting this link miacmaniac. I know the family. One uncle & a cousin were Johnnie golfers in their time and he currently has a cousin at CSB. His dad is 2 yrs. younger than me & I played H.S. football with another uncle. Good family. Please keep them in your prayers.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

My thoughts on the SJU win are that a win is a win and that they really showed some grit to hang in there and seal the deal.  There were a lot of mistakes made, but there were a lot of good things, too.  As Gary used to tell us, it's okay to make a mistake, just don't make it twice.  They're young; they'll learn from it and be better next time.  First games are generally rough for the Js.  In 2001, we got pummeled by UW-EC and then lost to St. Olaf before going on a tear and making the NCAA semis.  In 2002, we lost in OT to UW-EC in the opener and nearly made it to the NCAA finals.  Time will tell with this Johnnie team.

Final thought:  I am looking forward to seeing more of Jakob Certeza.  The kid is a load!

A tradition unrivaled...

If the guy running the clock at River Falls last night had been on the job in Collegeville two years ago, the Johnnies would not have lost to Augsburg.  Interesting how a play can be run and no time comes off the clock.  I don't blame him one bit.  It's only cheating when you get caught.   ;)  Good thing for the Johnnies the officials did a good job keeping him honest.

I absolutely agree on this one. He steamrolled a few RF linebackers on several occasions.
I will enjoy watching him play over the next four years.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

You should have heard VOJ. He was nearly calling for the National Guard.

Ron,

We have always had some voters who are willing to change No. 1 votes midseason even if a team keeps winning. I doubt those people will change their philosophies this year.

Pat - my question strikes week one.

Hey new poster here! Been around for along time in the MIAC even coached in it. Looking forward to a new season, should be great. Awesome win for Gary and his boys, Love the MIAC, good friend of John G (have a personalized signed litho of him in my basement mancave) That being said, I have to admit being a Tommie fan (mostly) MIAC 7-0 nothing better to see great d3 football in Minny. Saw the Tommie scrimmage a week ago 1's vs. 2's thought the 2's got the best of the scrimmage. Left thinking the door was open, maybe the Toms had a dream season last year. Was hoping they were just that deep and that their 2's were very good. After today's game, I am thinking the latter. Total domination, EC looked very good coming out of the locker room but, that's it. SJU fans, don't be fooled their not as good (big and strong) as they look. UST is very deep, ferazzo out, luke Marks out, schnieder out, Noehring very limited, did not seem to miss a beat. The Waldvogel kid is pretty good got a lot time in the second half. The one to watch for though is Millis #1, the kid from Black River falls (possibly the next "Fritz"). Defense looks very talented and deep, I believe they must have played 20+ on that side of the ball. Anyway, should be a great year, new President was at the game Dr. Sullivan seemed very enthusiastic!

Texas Ole

This is a great week for the MIAC.  It is only Week 1 so it is hard to make many comparisons, but hopefully this trend continues with the OOC games.  Also a lot of Penz and Schmiesing in the St. Olaf box score.  That brings back a few flashbacks.  I do live in Texas and was not able to catch the game online today.  Any insight on the game would be appreciated.

With regards to coaching in the MIAC you have to look at tenure.  Several schools have had coaches that have led programs for years with varying levels of success.  Wins are important and should be taken in to consideration, but think about what the coach has brought to the school and the MIAC.  I think a lot of people fail to realize that we are not that far away from when you coached multiple sports at a school.  I am sure one of the SJU fans could let us know all the sports Coach Gagliardi coached over the years.  Caruso's record is impressive, but we are talking about 5 seasons.  When he makes it to 10 years and starts to create a lasting positive impact on UST and the MIAC I may start to consider him as one of the great MIAC coaches, but he is not even close yet.

A couple photos from the past week.  The first is a view as the train was passing through Circular Quay in Sydney at sunset on my way to the airport.  Sydney is a dirty, noisy city but that harbor is spectacular and I reckon that Circular Quay has to be the most picturesque train stop in the world.  You can see the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the left and the Sydney Oprah House on the right.

And the second was from the golf on Saturday morning.  These are a bunch of ducks roosting up on top of a 20 ft fence along one of the tee boxes.  Do ducks normally do this?

Welcome!  Here's some +K for a great first post.

Recap of some of the first week's conference records:

MIAC 7 - 0
Liberty League 6 - 0
WIAC 5 - 3
IIAC 4 - 4
CCIW 4 - 2
UMAC 2 - 8
HCAC 0 - 9
NACC 0 - 7

I suspect all these games were inter-conference or non-conference NAIA games at this time of the year. It does give you an idea of the relative strength of the MIAC when compared to the neighboring conferences.

So Hamline won...did anyone watch the game?  Thoughts on the new coaching staff?

UWW and the WIAC were 10 mins away from another loss.  The best cof in the country nearly went .500 on opening weekend.  Here's hoping the MIAC rings up two more on them next weekend.

Rev Thanks for the +k. With regard to the HU coaches, first nice win for them. My guess is that they know what their doing and will be pretty good. You don't hang around the Tressels for as long as Rogo has and not learn something. He has a tough job though and will have to be patient, or I should say the school and admin will have to be patient.
