To be very clear, in no way was I saying that the commentators are doing a bad job.  I'm just pointing out that different teams take different approaches to broadcasting.  UWRF seems to use it as an opportunity for student development; UST relies on professional broadcasters.  That choice means that the viewing experience differs, and this is obvious.  That being said, regardless of the approach it seems that UWRF should upgrade their equipment.  My wife came in the room and asked if I was watching old football clips.

UST relies on the fact that they have some major corporate sponsors such as Land O' Lakes, probably in an overall commercial contract and most likely because of alumni involvement. I don't know that just guessing.

Why else would major broadcast capital be sent out to such a select audience?  WCCO is an old school clear channel station that has lost the Twins, Vikings and Gophers rights. Their audience is AARP unless there is a tornado warning and then they barely compete with NOAA radio, and after 9am their ratings fall hard.  They feature a 93 year old sports guy ferchrissakes!

UST doesn't rely on professional broadcasters as much as they rely on alumni buying time to force this dying CBS affiliate to have their morning celebrity call UST games. Listen to how bored he really is. He knows hardly anyone is listening compared to his morning audience.

So earlier this week Ron Doney was saying that UST is number one or should be number one based one the results from last week.  Well this week an obviously terrible UWRF (they must be awful because SJU beat them) is playing them close at the half.  If it stays this close and UST wins, does that mean they should drop out of the top 10...because after all UWRF is just so bad according to everyone.

UWRF doing a helluva job moving the ball and playing tough. Absence of Brenton Braddock is telling right now.

A friend of mine is station manager of the ESPN affiliate in Western Michigan and they don't have rights to Michigan or MSU so I always tell him to carry the Gopher games...just kidingly.  He says if a sponsor pays him to carry it he would put them on.  That is how the radio industry works.  WCCO wouldn't pay a cent to cover UST football if they did not have sponsors footing the bill.  Most likely UST found the sponsors not WCCO.

UWRF might not be that bad.  Last week both team basically shot themselves in the foot all night, SJU was the one that had a toe left.  If UWRF plays mistake free they can stay with UST, especially if UST has an off night.

National champions don't have the luxury of an off night.

And U$T is not a national champion  ;D

I'm pretty damn sure there is no check going from WCCO to UST. It's more like "you cover UST with your best, and my company will sponsor it and buy another $300,000 worth of time on your family of stations this year.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I've cut deals to get my squad extra radio time along with regular programming with my advertising contracts. Good for the UST guys. The key in dealing with radio or athletic departments, as a businessman, is to ask for extras that cost them nothing but are of value to you. That works for everyone.

I don't think that's particularly unique, though.

I get that it's fashionable among SJU fans to rag on Dave Lee but the guy works hard, does his homework and calls a good game. He's just as good as Mark, if not better. And I listened to Mark A LOT while on the east coast.

I didn't mean to imply WCCO was paying UST.  I mean they would expend a cent that was not covered by sponsors.

Every year is different Capn. Apparently this Falcon team has built itself up. Coach has got his guys in place after a couple years. New AD as well.

The worst team in the WIAC is almost never worst than No. 100 overall.

Which is scary, because depth is supposed to be our strength.

Kaiser has put the ball on the ground twice, Waldvogel once and ATB is injured. Yikes!

Loving UWRF right now...Tommies are sucking so bad on offense that their o-line is holding about every other play.

That last drive was UST pinning their ears back and going. Nothing cute, and I think that's how you have to beat these tough ass WIAC teams that won't go away. Really impressed with UWRF. I think they're much better than advertised.

Now you've gone and pissed them off.  Thanks for the boost.

Then the U$T goes cheap and picks up a 15 yard penalty for taunting the QB.
