I know that GC can do no wrong in some of your eyes, but it's things like this that irk me.  He is the anti-John Gagliardi.

It's probably jealousy at his track record, but I always wonder if his players snicker behind his back at his silly FAMILY schtick. I mean really. I'm not the only one that thinks that's silly, am I? Do college athletes really use that as a motivational tool?

I remember exactly when I lost respect for him: It was when he climbed into the stands in Collegeville to celebrate a win last year. Instead of taking the stairs, he climbed up the and over the railing. I think I remarked to someone "You'd never see Gagliardi do that."

Gagliardi was passionate in-game, but once it ended, he'd stroll off the field, usually alone. He let the players do the celebrating, because they did all the heavy lifting.

I don't know, I got the impression when Pat interviewed him last year that he'd let a lot of the accolades and press about how great he was go to his head. He seems like one of those guys with a giant ego that needs to be fed a lot.

The hand-holding, linked-elbow fad of today is perfectly analogous to the 80s/90s fad of performing perfectly synchronized jumping jacks whilst spelling out the name and/or mascot name of your school. It is these kinds of fads that all Johnnie fans are (rightly) taught to despise. That's why SJU is "A Tradition Unrivaled" because we don't fall victim to these hopelessly silly gimmicks.

Just wait, Duff, I hear UST is going to start doing "The Hive"pretty soon

The person filming this and providing his own commentary seems like one that would be a Tommie fan--because only a Tommie would be absolutely mesmerized by a teams ability to link elbows and sway back and forth.

Can I get really picky?  It's the slight head tilt that puts me over the edge. It tries to impart that little bit of emotional significance to THIS REALLY BIG DEAL of being on the team. Even though I never played ball at SJU, one of the things that I really liked about the school was that you didn't really even know who the ball players were unless you knew. There was no idolisation. No rockstar atmosphere. St Glenn's head tilt and this photo in general do not convey the same morality.

A second thought about this picture and my regard of Gagliardi: he always treated football as a stepping stone to somewhere else in life - demonstrated by all seniors being named captain.  This picture has the feeling of a cult of personality where this is as good as it gets for these players - they get to be one of an anonymous herd surrounding the center of the program's attention. Actually, the more I think of it that way the more I really don't like this photo. Only one person is known; everyone else is a supporting act.

EDIT: even more on that line - the photo is darkened the further you get away from St Glenn. The players on the edge are really anonymous while the players near him get join in the radiance centered around him. I bet the people putting this together had no idea of the image they were creating, the cult of personality worship becoming so ingrained n our society.

That thought came to me this past week while reading a story about the Johnnies on miacathletics.com. In the story it said:
"On this late-August day, the final two-a-day session of camp, the whole Johnnie football family was having fun. " [emphasis added]

Despite using the word in a context with no reference to U$T, I had a visceral reaction to the simple use of it because of all of the F.A.M.I.L.Y. garbage coming from the corner of Cretin and Summit.
F.A.M.I.L.Y. is another buzzword/catchphrase for those whose brain is the size of a walnut.

I look at this picture and think how shlubby he looks. He looks like he is getting ready to clean out the garage...and he brought his big strong friends to help. I am sure he knew of this photo op (why else are they taking the field like this if not to make a statement and get attention). It is like he borrowed one of his players tops (and their little brother's pants). I have seen him look just fine in other picture, but this is an unfortunate outfit. Sometimes I am such a girl... 8-)

I never thought my updated signature would generate such a visceral response.  All I can say is...monkey stomp (maybe double or triple)...

They enter every game this way.  Outstanding players from the previous week are selected to lead the team with Coach Caruso.

The dissecting and parsing of this photo every way from Sunday can only mean one thing...It's Tommie-Johnnie Week!

Pull up a chair, grab some popcorn and enjoy the show folks.

Hmmm...I guess Coach Caruso can't do anything right.  Here's what the right type of coaching looks like:

It looks like they are holding hands and skipping merrily along.

He's pretty good at holding hands (and skipping).  I have to give him that.

Zing.

If I could translate, Bennie might think Caruso wears his big brothers clothes, but the Reverend just insinuated Gags can no longer dress himself (did I get that right?).

Come on now Johnnies, you can't let that go unchallenged...

Fellas- you are making a making SOMETHING out of NOTHING.
According to the January 2008 press release announcing Caruso as the new Head Coach at UST (at that time) he was working on his Ph. D in psychology . He has an audience who wants to hear his message and he has them mesmerized. Similar to how some politicians and cult leaders mesmerize their followers. It doesn't make sense for those looking at the situation from afar but for those who are emotionally invested it makes all the sense in the world.   http://www.tommiesports.com/ftbl/news/archives/2008/20080124New_Coach.html

Here's something I noticed that is sure to light the fire once again under the "SJU Video Webcast" discussion.

Did anyone else catch Mark and Bryan referring to the replay on the view screen in the broadcast booth after a few of today's controversial calls?

I remember seeing a closed-circuit feed on the TVs near the concessions at Clemens Stadium the last time I was there (I should point out the last time I was at the Natural Bowl was 2011). However, I only remember it being nothing more than a straight, unedited feed from a single camera on top of the press box.  Apparently, the folks running the feed must have added some replay capabilities because there were several times where Mark and Bryan talked about reviewing a play after the fact. This is certainly the first time I've heard it mentioned during the radio broadcast.

This leads me to wonder if we are getting close to a streaming feed in the near future?

Yes indeed there are replay capabilities. Last season Mrs. 105 & myself were guests in one of the corporate suites for a game and they do have a very nice AV feed coming into all the suites. The technology is there,it just needs to be approved to be released to the masses via the internet or a pay-per-view option.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
