So I just want to say that I'm driving back from NYC and it's nice to take a break and check out the banter.  I wonder, what is the etymology of "Tommies Suck?" Is it derived from the speech of those who couldn't get into UST? Or does its roots lie elsewhere, far deeper in the Johnie psyche?

just a little something that preceded the sun rising in the east...
I've never understood the Johnnie obsession with throwing out the taunt about sucking. It reminds me of a six year old sniggering anytime he hears the word "fart."
In light of all the negatrive PR the word/act has brought on their beloved community over the past 30 years, one would think it would be a term they'd avoid like poison.
But maybe its actually some cultish compliment?

In other news, I hear Cher sang at a recent SJU/CBS alumni gathering. In honor of her audience, she reworded her 70s hit "Half Breed" to fit her audience  ;D
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Bench, did you ever get to hold hands with Don Roney or anyone else on the U$T coaching staff?
No there was no hand-holding in that era. No success either.

Then it is settled. If SJU wants to get back to the top of the conference they need to resolve their internal conflict regarding personal sexual orientation and start holding hands.

Talk about a non-sequitur...

I'm pretty sure a quick perusal of NCAA football teams ranked at or near the bottom of their respective conference, region or division would yield some awful program like a Florida Atlantic, Tulane, one of the directional Michigan schools, Minnesota-Morris etc. that engages in some form of ridiculous looking hand holding found at U$T.

It looks silly regardless of who you are.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

I will say that I always put the Tommies Suck out there due to tradition.  In it's simplest form Tommies Suck brings me back to my youth.  I remember driving to SJU for the game and seeing the Tommies Suck banner hanging over I94.  Unfortunately present administration no longer allows it.  Didn't always like the various manifestations the t-shirt wars took over time.  Just the clean Tommies Suck said it all.
Btw, for those newbies, Johnnies and Tommies no matter the insult at the end of the game there is always respect.  We work together, are friends, and occupy a unique kinship with each other that we do not have with other schools in the MIAC.

hey, she's on farewell tour #362 I think now. If you remember Trevor Winter, you're close to same age as me   :)

Just the other day my boss was pointing out that just because you learned something in the 70's doesn't mean that it is no longer useful. I agreed whole heartedly and pointed out that I tie my shoes and spell my name on a regular basis! Good thing my boss likes me! ;D

Maniac, as a graduate of SJ Prep School, I would think that you would shy away from any "jokes" about such matters.  ::)  Of course, maybe that's why you left the comforts of Stearns county.

Mr.MIAC

UPDATE: Left with a legacy of no-touch practices and inspired by UST's success, rumor has it that Fasching has made hand-holding mandatory for all SJU football players.  The team has responded well, with sightings of hand-holding (like this witnessed this morning on the shores of Lake Sagatagan) all over campus.  The on-field impact is yet to be determined.

bennie - I too am heartened by the start of Pre-season hockey. I know you posted that as a basis for your dig at the Tommies, but, nonetheless, ittells me that the season is nigh.

Your Blue Jackets beat the vaunted Pens (I know it means nothing because they are just trying to see whatthey have in their respective training camps) but the winning goal in OT was quite pretty, and shows that there is hope.

My Caps also showed some spark in beating the Jets. They were speedy, and though about half of the "D" corps was new, they showed some skills. Nate Schmidt had a nice pass that was deflected by Galiev for a goal. Mike Green showed again why his nickname is "Game Over."

Scary situation in DC's Navy Yard right now.

Spent a lot of time in that neighborhood and my best friend, his wife and son (all okay) still live in an apartment right smack dab in the middle of that scene.

There might be something to this. Bethel sucked until we hired a coach who was a bit of a crier  ;D ;)

Still, I'm predicting the first new 'no' of the Fasching era is 'No hand holding'

Speaking as a player that went through a berating at the hands of John Gagliardi for hand-holding in the defensive huddle, I can guarantee that that wouldn't be a "new" no!

I inadvertently walked in on a pregame BC coach's "crying session" at SJU in '01.  It threw me for a loop!   :o
