There might be something to this. Bethel sucked until we hired a coach who was a bit of a crier  ;D ;)

I inadvertently walked in on a pregame BC coach's "crying session" at SJU in '01.  It threw me for a loop!   :o

You clearly recovered by game time  :-[

Scary situation in DC's Navy Yard right now.

Spent a lot of time in that neighborhood and my best friend, his wife and son (all okay) still live in an apartment right smack dab in the middle of that scene.
Bethel's former SID works in that building and reports he is out and unharmed.
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Johnnie fans, I wanted some of your thoughts and reactions to the UW-EC game.

I was awaiting the arrival of RB Jacob Certeza, but he didn't look quite as good as at River Falls.  BUT, Sura looked very good to me and I'd like to see more of him.

Bruns did a fine job in crappy weather.  Funny, no one wanted the QB shuffle again, but it's nice to have a decent back-up.  Plan A and 1-A.  He put those passes to Bungum on the money.

We've gotten spoiled with decent TE's recently and the Johnnies need that threat in their offense.  Hopefully they can step it up at that position.

I thought the D played pretty well all in all, hard to ask anyone to stop Sweeney, what a horse.  He was bigger than almost everyone on the Johnnie D.  But I thought the front 7 brought it most of the game.

I just looked at a list I made of the Johnnie freshman who were expected to contribute, especially on D, but based on the first two games, it doesn't seem like I've seen much (granted, my program was under the poncho Saturday for almost the entire game!!   And it still got soaked).  Who did I miss?

I think there's some hope for this team, there aren't really any great "standouts" (Bungum maybe on offense qualifies), but they play together and get the job done.  Well, GOT the job done vs. 2 WIAC middle of the road teams.  Now let's see where it goes from here.

I think they're trying to ease him in.  He looks good.  He runs "downhill" with good head of steam, and I like his size.

Agreed.

Yes!  I mentioned that to SJUSection105 last week.  The TEs have good size but need to catch before they run.

They are improving and looked better than at UW-RF.  They're finally starting to show flashes of a pass rush.

I'm as clueless as you.  Between tending to a 2-year old and the rain, my full attention wasn't there.  I thought Evan Clark, #22, made a nice bid for more playing time at WR.

I agree.  If they improve each week, I think they'll be a pretty solid team.

So I just want to say that I'm driving back from NYC and it's nice to take a break and check out the banter.  I wonder, what is the etymology of "Tommies Suck?" Is it derived from the speech of those who couldn't get into UST? Or does its roots lie elsewhere, far deeper in the Johnie psyche?

just a little something that preceded the sun rising in the east...
I've never understood the Johnnie obsession with throwing out the taunt about sucking. It reminds me of a six year old sniggering anytime he hears the word "fart."
In light of all the negatrive PR the word/act has brought on their beloved community over the past 30 years, one would think it would be a term they'd avoid like poison.
But maybe its actually some cultish compliment?

In other news, I hear Cher sang at a recent SJU/CBS alumni gathering. In honor of her audience, she reworded her 70s hit "Half Breed" to fit her audience  ;D
I will say that I always put the Tommies Suck out there due to tradition.  In it's simplest form Tommies Suck brings me back to my youth.  I remember driving to SJU for the game and seeing the Tommies Suck banner hanging over I94.  Unfortunately present administration no longer allows it.  Didn't always like the various manifestations the t-shirt wars took over time.  Just the clean Tommies Suck said it all.
Btw, for those newbies, Johnnies and Tommies no matter the insult at the end of the game there is always respect.  We work together, are friends, and occupy a unique kinship with each other that we do not have with other schools in the MIAC.

True enough.  A Johnnie interviewed me for my current job.  I walked into the interview, told him that, as much as it made me viscerally sick, I supposed I probably had to shake his hand - he said, "Tommies Suck," and I was as good as employed.

Oktoberfest best beers!  Check Nummer zwei   :P

Leinie's Oktoberfest is on tap at the LaPlayette. Had a couple after the game and they were mighty tasty.

Boys of Fall

Agree with you MRF.  A few other thoughts:

Defense does look quicker across the board.  Maybe got tired in the second half, but in the first half were able to get Sweeney before he got moving.

Although UWEC isn't really a passing team, the secondary didn't really make mistakes, except maybe the Warner slip.  We'll obviously get a better look this Saturday.

Essler and Sura will get most of their correctly following blocks, Ceterza has some bulk and downhill running that gives a different demension.  Maybe his fumble in the red zone is what prevents more carries, along with being a freshman.

Not really seeing a playmaker yet.  Bungum can make things happen in the open field, but there doesn't seem to be a back or receiver to make something happen.

I'm not a big fan of having the QB roll out the opposite way, seemed Bruns rolled to his left frequently.  2-0 though at this point.

Texas Ole

Leine Oktoberfest is legit!  Is it wrong if I try climbing the beer cooler at the local stores to rid them of the sugary beers that Leine makes so there is extra room for the Oktoberfest?

A good beer discussion is always a must on this board.  Now if someone knows some people at Schell's that can convince them to send Firebrick to Texas I would appreciate it.

Luther finally won over St Olaf.......in about ten years !

Oles have two plus great receivers but the QB throws about ten yards beyond them often.  Luther intercepted several.  Both teams had too many turnovers.

Win Luther needed badly after 0-13 from 2011.

Among certain circles that is still a huge rivalry.  I have heard rumors of coaches getting reprimanded for not scheduling that game in various sports.  Schmeising and Asp are seniors.  Nate Penz at QB is sophomore.  It is a bit of a growing pain with the Oles.  The good news is that it is OOC.

Boys of Fall

It'll be different not having Dobson throwing to Schmeising and Asp.  By the time Penz gets in a groove those two might be gone.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.  A Tommie working for a Johnnie?  How is that possible?  You must have dropped out of U$T, right?

I wonder if this was for the job at one of those fancy "Grill and Chill" locations, or if the Tommie was only qualified to work at one of the summer only hamburger-less Dairy Queens.
