Roney, if you'd jumped on the CST bandwagon earlier you'd know that we've welcomed the wit and wisdom of Bennie from the beginning.  She knows how to keep us boys in line when we start to go off the rails.

Hello back from D3 Football exile...it was crazy I was taken to a dark room to be rehabilitated( very similar to the movie "Clockwork Orange") they were trying to get me to concede to all things Johnnies...they showed me clips of John G and the ancient cult rites that are practiced in collegeville that involved things to disturbing to share right now. Anyway I have learned one thing that was implanted in my thick head...what ever you do on this board don't ever make fun or of the great John G!  Even when they...the chosen ones have cart blanche to personally rip the coach of the team you support and even though they personally attack you and they promise not to be your friend either. You must show restrain..I cried  myself to sleep last night at the thought no Johnnie would ever be my friend :'(  and to think that they would shun me!  Well it didn't work I am back and working on my new poster of John G. To honor him the way he should...Pat please don't censor this I promise it will be in good taste!  You can trust me!  ;D  Well on second thought I better not...is it enough that UST is going to destroy SJU this Saturday? Yes!!!!!  I enjoyed the new product endorsement by The one not to be mentioned!

Go Tommie's!!!!!!
It's not so much that Gags is off limits for teasing, it's just not funny.  He's not Bobby Bowden or Woody Hayes.  Imagine if you were trying to make fun of the Packers, but instead of picking on Rodgers or Favre, you tried to belittle Reggie White for his faith.
I thinks wives, kids, and disabilities are off limits.  And no a Napoleon Complex is not a disability so Caruso is free game.

Gary Fasching got shipwrecked in the gulf of Mexico and washed up on an island where he came upon a bottle.  He rubbed it, and out popped a genie. The genie said, "I'll grant you 3 wishes, but whatever you wish for, St. Glenn gets double."

Gary said, "Okay.  Give me a new boat to get off the island.  Who cares if St. Glenn gets two boats?"  *POOF*  There was his boat.

"Next, I want a 10-year contract with SJU."  So, he got his 10-year contract, but St. Glenn got a 20-year contract at U$T.

So, he thought for a moment and told the Gene, "For my third wish, Genie, I want you to beat me half to death."

Do you think they will be able to get that last one Duff?

I found myself deep in the YouTube abyss last night and came across an interesting, if not well produced, video about John. Most of the clips in the video were from the 1990 season but there were also some black and white clips from his early days at SJU mixed in. I have a feeling the great Jim Lehman was running the ball in some of them.

I remember hearing after I graduated that John would show Lehman highlights in his Theory of Football class. I don't have many regrets from my days at SJU but not taking that class is near the top.

While watching the video one thing that stood out to me that I'd forgotten was the way John introduced the starters by position before each game inside the McNeely Spectrum. In general everyone knew who the starters were going to be but on occasion there was some doubt. I was someone well down the depth chart but I remember getting excited hearing the names of my teammates called as they went up to shake John's hand. The ritual wasn't flashy, it was done behind closed doors but I always thought it was a real cool and special moment. You can see and sort of hear the announcement in this clip. Since this was 1990 the team held their pregame in the old Palestra.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=e2FLPmQqMcg#t=116

For SJU supporters there are a lot of great moments in the video. How can you not love John's non-branded turquoise coat? As someone who works in advertising I have no problem saying marketing has ruined many things, most notably sports. We won't ever see another like John. Even he succumbed to logo shirts and hats his last few years on the sideline.

Between CT, Doney, Maniac, Reverend, Bench, and DoubleO, it seems that there is quite the Toms smokefest going on here.  ::)  When will they ever give us the respect that we are entitled to???????

You have an excellent golf program. For whatever that's worth.

It was a pretty cool ritual.  The first time he called my name was a bit of a surprise; it was something I had worked for for so long, and I was pumped that it was actually happening.

Duff, I always wondered what the starters thought about it and hoped you'd chime in. The video even captured John's walk during "calisthenics" where he'd shake the hand of most players. I know a lot of coaches do this but he had a style to it all his own.

I can bet my karma will take a killing for this, and really I have no dog in this fight not caring about either school, but it's not ok to joke about incontinence for an ex-coach, but it is ok to joke about beating a current one to death? Interesting unwritten rules.

Thanks for posting, Rube. So Tommies don't feel left out, they beat the Johnnies in 1990, 25-14.

Looking at stats, that season is pretty interesting. SJU went 7-3, a year sandwiched between two seasons that ended in the national semifinals. And the 1990 team actually scored more and gave up fewer points than the '89 one, which lost 28-0 in semis to Dayton.

The 1991 team has a case for being best SJU team not to win a national title, I'd think. Maybe even ahead of '93, if only because of how that one ended. Closest game was 35-25 over Hamline. Averaged 41.8, gave up 9.8.  Beat Coe 75-2 in playoffs. Then lost to Dayton 19-7, infamous game where Johnnies kept it close despite an astounding 10 turnovers.

It may take a Washington & Lee fan to point out something like that. Now we need a Franklin & Marshall fan (Diplomats) to mediate this dispute.

Duff, I always wondered what the starters thought about it and hoped you'd chime in.

I think the coolest part about it was that you had John, in his soft-spoken, near-whisper, commanding the attention of 190 football players in their early-20s.  It was so contrary to the visions most people have of a college football team getting ready to take the field (i.e. getting pumped up).

Two responses:

1) I didn't complain about the incontinence jokes (hell, I have even heard JG make them).
2) We're the Johnnie Smokefest.  We make our own rules.
