drink lots of Grain Belt (fresher in St. Paul)

You do realize that it is brewed in New Ulm now, right?

Fresher, as in, fresher than Grain Belt in Grand Forks.

One more news update (sorry to interrupt the Tommie-Johnnie hugs and kisses).

Bethel's J. D. Mehlorn was named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He's one of 22 players from all of college football so honored. As a previous winner (shameless self-promotion  :)), I'd like to welcome J. D. to the 'All Pharisee Team' with open arms! You can also vote for him to be team captain. He's the only MIAC guy this year, so you don't even have to feel guilty about it  :)

In all seriousness, it's a nice honor to a guy who's been active in volunteering and a great representative of Bethel, the MIAC and Division III:

QuoteAllstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) today announced the 22-player roster for the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®.  Included in the group of student-athletes was senior safety, J.D. Mehlhorn. Recognizing the "good works" of a select group of college football players from across the country, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® is one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college sports.  The award pays tribute to the positive impact these young athletes have had on their communities and the lives of others.

Mehlhorn, a biokinetics major at Bethel, has been an active participant in the community for a number of years, as he most recently traveled to Bratislava, Slovakia this summer to volunteer his time with inner city kids through a variety of programs, including sports camps. Additionally, the Lakeville, Minn., native has served at Feed My Starving Children, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Berean Neighborhood Care, and with Adopt-A-Park.

The fresherest Grain Belt is in New Ulm. Just not a Summit or Surly guy I guess.

GO JOHNNIES!

hazzben, I was going to vote for your guy when I noticed that Jeff Budzien, Northwestern (Chicago) placekicker and nephew of my classmate Greg Budziein '78, was also on the team.  Had to go with the Johnnie connection.  ;D

Don't worry, I actually managed enough motivation to give Hazzben +K for his being a past member of the Good Works team AND went to the webpage and voted for the Royal. I think those count as my charitable works for the day! ;)

Touchdown Tommy

Okay I think we're set for tomorrow.  Went to Happy Hour with old friend OneArmedScot last night at Mancini's and he then insisted I come over to his house for dinner.  Man did he outkick his coverage.  His wife cooked us dinner and served copious amounts of beer while we watched football.

Injury Report for Saturday: Veek (Out), L.L. Bean (Doubtful), RetiredOldRat (Probable), Benchwarmer (Questionable), Carbo (Questionable), Tmerton (Out), Finsleft (Questionable), OneArmedScot (Probable), KiltedRat (Out), RedHotBennie (Probable), Faunch (Probable)

We'll be tailgating at 10am.  Benchwarmer: Stop at Davanni's and get us a platter of those delicious brownies.  And a 30 pak of Hamm's.  Also, many thanks to your scumbag Tommie brethren for the $10 admission.  I was there scouting a couple weeks ago and it was $8.  I know money is tight at Cretin and Summit these days.  Understandable.

Hope everyone saw my pal Wildcat11's video on TheBigLead.com yesterday.  I'm told it did over 60K views in 24 hours.  Exceptional camera work, TDT loved the spot shadow.  Even more amazing is that I'm told the score was 6-0 at the time.  Whoa baby Linfield looks like a monster again this year.

The Cobber/Ole "Troll Trophy" could get on ESPN College Gameday this weekend. http://peterson.areavoices.com/2013/09/18/the-ugliest-traveling-trophy-in-college-football-could-make-an-appearance-on-espn/

Is the Troll Trophy that big of a deal? I feel like I'm pretty plugged into the MIAC in general, when I'm not blinded by my Johnnie red and smokefests, but I don't remember hearing about the trophy in other years. It's been discussed on this board and I've seen multiple mentions of it in my twitter feed. Is it simply the fact that Gameday is going to be in the area so those associated with the trophy are trying to build it up? I don't ask to criticize, just curious.

I'm obviously not an Ole or Cobber, but I've heard of the troll before. I can't say how intense the rivalry is, but I think there's a little bad blood between both sides. Though I Olaf obviously hates Carleton with special level of vitriol.

Which brings up another question I guess. Who would Concordia consider their biggest MIAC rival? SJU, St. Olaf, Bethel, UST?
This is always a big game for the Cobbers and I would assume the Oles. The Troll does add excitment to the game. It was always fun after the game running over to it and lifting it up and taking pictures with it. It just worked out well that Gameday was coming to town this week to get some good pub for Concordia and the MIAC in general, and this was the unique way that it could happen.

But as a former player the St. Johns game was always the biggest.  Though the St. Thomas, St. Olaf and Bethal games are always big ones too.
