Developing....

Listened to it...not that big of deal to me.  What you hear is Coach Caruso...that's who he is.  Different style then John G or Gary Fasching...that's all.

I like Josh Bungam, but he is no Blake Elliott.  Blake would have had a couple of touchdowns yesterday on the balls caught by Josh.  Josh doesn't have the strength that Blake did to break tackles.

I agree, Elliot had 72 catches and over a thousand yards his sophomore season.  I don't think Josh will be there by the end of the season.  Bungum reminds me more of Adam Herbst.
Not to quibble, but Bungam is on pace for 86 and 1060....just sayin.

Elliot had 14 receiving touchdowns his sophomore season and Bungum only has one so far.  Elliot just seemed like he could take it to the house every time he touched the ball.  Maybe I just remember it that way because I am confusing Elliot's punt and kick returns with his receiving stats.  I think Bungum is a great player and love the fact that he is a local guy and only a sophomore.  In Bungum's defense, Elliot had Keating throwing him the ball during his sophomore year.

The Cobber/Ole "Troll Trophy" could get on ESPN College Gameday this weekend. http://peterson.areavoices.com/2013/09/18/the-ugliest-traveling-trophy-in-college-football-could-make-an-appearance-on-espn/

Is the Troll Trophy that big of a deal? I feel like I'm pretty plugged into the MIAC in general, when I'm not blinded by my Johnnie red and smokefests, but I don't remember hearing about the trophy in other years. It's been discussed on this board and I've seen multiple mentions of it in my twitter feed. Is it simply the fact that Gameday is going to be in the area so those associated with the trophy are trying to build it up? I don't ask to criticize, just curious.

I'm obviously not an Ole or Cobber, but I've heard of the troll before. I can't say how intense the rivalry is, but I think there's a little bad blood between both sides. Though I Olaf obviously hates Carleton with special level of vitriol.

Which brings up another question I guess. Who would Concordia consider their biggest MIAC rival? SJU, St. Olaf, Bethel, UST?
This is always a big game for the Cobbers and I would assume the Oles. The Troll does add excitment to the game. It was always fun after the game running over to it and lifting it up and taking pictures with it. It just worked out well that Gameday was coming to town this week to get some good pub for Concordia and the MIAC in general, and this was the unique way that it could happen.

But as a former player the St. Johns game was always the biggest.  Though the St. Thomas, St. Olaf and Bethal games are always big ones too.

I don't think it has the history of the Goat Trophy.  I want to say the Troll trophy game only dates back about 30-40 years.  It has also been known as the Lefse Bowl.  In fact I seem to remember a different trophy from when I was at St. Olaf.  Like most St. Olaf rivalries it is bigger with the older alumni than with younger students.  The Norwegian heritage of St. Olaf lends itself to rivalries also with Augsburg and Gustavus.  The other programs at several of these schools add to the rivalry.  I've been to a few athletic contests where someone has started talking trash comparing music programs.
You hit it on the head, Texas Ole. I remember addressing this issue of Concordia rivalries here a few years back. The most prominent rivalry for many years was not against an MIAC opponent, but against the school formerly known as Moorhead State. Concordia is sort of the Switzerland of the MIAC. From the Concordia perspective, St. Olaf is the most traditional school rival, but that has little to do with sports. It is a brotherly rivalry of similar schools with similar heritage, one exurban and one rural (essentially). Cobbers have to travel down I-94 a couple hours to get to its closest geographic rival--St. Johns.

In football, recent history (as in the last 20 years) would put St. Johns as the top football rival--so often at the top with a particular knack for sucking the soul out of Cobber fans in games' closing moments. The way the Bethel game ended last season could create some short term vitriol this season. We'll see.

As for the troll, it's been around since '74. It is a traveling trophy, but as was noted earlier, the Cobber-Ole game is still the "lefse bowl" not the "troll bowl" in most alums minds.

Play hard and keep the peace, boys.

I don't know how to like posts, but I definitely appreciate your post.  Good luck to your boys at Concordia.  The St. Olaf radio guys seemed to be very complementary towards your team during the broadcast.

I do have a question for people on this board.  Is it a recent thing or have people seen Ramler as a good coach for some time?  I met him a few times while he was at Carleton.  I was quite impressed by him.  He was genuine and seemed to really support the school.  I thought he did a great job with that team and school.  A few scores against St. Olaf show he knew what he was doing.  I would see him around campus while I was working other jobs.  He knew I was from Olaf, but he was always kind to me.  I appreciated that while he was the football coach he wanted kids to experience Carleton even if that was at the expense of football which seemed to add to his football program.

New top 25 poll is out:
UST falls to #6
Bethel up to #5
SJU leaps to #21
Augsburg still not ranked, received 30 votes (down from 37 votes last week).

http://www.d3football.com/top25/2013/week3

Hmmm - only 10 points separating the top three teams, then a couple of hops and then another 10 point spread for 6,7 and 8. UST could have dropped further with just a few votes cast differently.

At the bottom of the heap only 4 points separating 25, 26 and 27 - so Augsburg could have been in as well.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Johnnies so high up in the top 25 - kudos to the way they played and were coached!

Can't wait to hear the Around the Nation podcast tomorrow morning.

Something about this photo from the SCTimes made me chuckle but I just don't think their caption captures the true essence of the photo.

SCTimes caption: University of St. Thomas fans leave the field after Saturday's game against St. John's at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.

Any creative types out there got any thoughts on a catchy quip for it?

I LOVE YOU!

SJU60TX

Because St. Thomas has gone so deep in the playoffs lately, I've seen a lot of Tommies football the past few years.

Some gimmicks did work, some totally blew up in his face.

They call every game like this. Just the way they are. And honestly, generally they work.

PAT:  I recognize GC does this a lot---but the multiple changes late w personnel b4 the field goal was what i meant...

The blind Tommie fans picked up a wrench and saw - that the Johnnies rock? Kind of lame - but it's late and I'm ready to crash. G'nite.

Faunch-Ill try:

A couple of Tommie "Tools" leave the field in utter disbelief Saturday in St Paul as SJU Stuns UST 20-18

OR

Tommies run out of all options in the toolbox Saturday, lose 20-18 to SJU
