The Punt Pass....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a23JuEeitY#t=18

It is only a matter of time before Caruso uses this.  We all know Garrett Maloney is the Tom Brady of punt passers.  Seriously, Stevie Johnson better get his boys in line for this.

Notice EKU ran that play up 18 points with 5 minutes to play.  Don't think a coach would call that play with less than a 3 touchdown lead.  Anybody know the rule on that?  Does the kicked ball need to be caught behind the line of scrimmage?

According to what I heard on ESPN the answer is it must be fielded behind the line of scrimmage.  It was cool, but I am not sure it is something I would be willing to call if I were the coach.

Why not just throw it then?

The only thing I can think is that you're hoping that the punter going through the punting motion is going to cause defenders to fall back, creating a clearer path for the receiver?

Nobody seemed particularly fooled in the video, and it succeded because there were 2 receivers / gunners vs 1 defender, so again, a pass would have been incurred much less risk.

I've watched it a couple of times and it looks like the receiver doesn't gain possession until he crosses the line of scrimmage (40 yd line).  Anybody else notice that?  Neat play however even as  much of a gambler as Glenn is (Gamblin' Glenn???) is...it's a very risky play.

I would also warn the SJU fans to be prepared to see a lot of low blocks in the tackle box.  It is a how the offense is generally blocked.  They are legal due to the location where it is initiated.  The players also should not be diving at the legs to keep them safe.  These kinds of blocks brought us the gem of a rant last year from Dave Christensen of Wyoming against Air Force.  I believe this was also Armed Forces Appreciation Day for Wyoming.  It is filled with profanity so I will not post it since people may be accessing the board in a public setting or at work, but you can search for it online.

SCSU going HD...pretty impressive.  Interesting considering a couple years ago wasn't SCSU on the verge of dropping athletic programs due to budget issues?

This is great for fans and students.  I took some broadcast courses at SCSU back in the early 70's as part of my Mass Communications minor.  They already had a good core of TV and Radio broadcast courses back then.  I think that this is being funded more as a academic program expansion than an athletics department expense.  Once completed, the technology can be used for many other academic and college events.  For example, live coverage of on campus concerts, speeches and meetings.

Hopefully the CSB / SJU Communications department will read about this and get some ideas about webcasting events.  I'm doubtful however considering it's the athletic department holding the reigns on this.

The EKU punter is an Aussie. From a suburb in the north of Melbourne.  Coon Rapids or so.

ESPN asked the same question about how efficient is that play.  The punter is from Australia so who knows about his throwing motion.

Coon Rapids?  There is another place in the world with that awful name?

I'm from Anoka, CR was our arch-rival growing up.  Even without that, I've always thought they could have come up with something a LOT better.

Thanks for mentioning the tirade.  Not only did I watch it on youtube it led me to video of press conference meltdown by Jerry Burns in 1989 where he dropped 17 f-bombs.

I'm shocked SJU doesn't broadcast their games over the internet.  I seriously doubt it would hurt attendance.  Most people that watch the games online do it only because they cannot get to the game for several reasons.  I used to go to a ton of MIAC games after I graduated from St. Olaf just because I liked watching good football.  It was a great value for my entertainment dollar.  Watching the webcast was always a last resort.  The quality was never that great, and nothing beats watching football live.  Just tell the SJU to think of all fans and alumni that can't make to Collegeville for games that might increase their donations because they can now watch a webcast of the game.

I believe the streaming webcast was brought up in one of Gary's first two chats on SCTimes.com this season. And, from what I remember, it is not entirely in his control. He made reference to that decision being something that is nearly exclusively left to the administration (he did not specify whether that's the athletic administrators or university administrators).

I've always been a proponent of streaming the games live, and anyone that argues there would be a precipitous drop in attendance as a result is off their respective rocking chair.

Clemens Stadium is an exceptional place to watch a football game on a Saturday afternoon, and watching the game on webcast is nowhere close to being a worthy substitute if one has the means to get to Collegeville.

Is anyone else surprised by the results of the Front Page Poll? I get that few thought that the Johnnies would beat the Tommies, but surely, the Johnnies have not been out of the elite so long that some other team listed is a bigger surprise at 3 - 0.

Personally, I voted for Olivet.  I suspect the vote was due to the Tommie game.
