Interesting article from the New York Times:  Losing Is Good for You

I never received a participation trophy.  Maybe a ribbon, so long ago can't remember for sure.  For the record, I also never received a trophy for anything else.  :(  I somehow survived.

We affectionately refer to that one as "The Miracle in Moorhead."

If you ask my wife, I was livid, and we almost...almost...left before it was over.  I'm so glad that she convinced me to stay.  Then, we went to celebrate at Mick's Office!  ;D

I have a box of trophies buried in my folk's basement.  I can donate one or two to you if it would make you feel better, and if anyone would believe that you wrestled in the mid-to-late 90's.  ;)

Pretty sure I would have won a state title based upon the amount of Jaycees wrestling trophies and medals I acquired between ages 5 and 8 if I would have kept wrestling.  8-)  They'd weigh you at the meet and makes brackets of 4 or 8 kids at your exact weight.  No seeding and half the kids probably didn't want to be there.

Well, I was a bit older than that, but yes, if you were a decent wrestler (which I doubt you were, so maybe even if you weren't  ;D), wrestling trophies piled up quickly.

Also, there is a reason that they are in my parent's basement and not on my mantle.  ;D

Back in Iowa there was a local 'club' team before there were really club teams called 'Doc's Dudes.' Looking back, it's a really creepy name for a youth wrestling team  :-\ Anyway, it was this old, crusty 'doc' of something or other that ran it. All the kids were from the same school district. For some dumb reason a lot of the youth tournaments you'd list your weight when you registered and they made the brackets. There was a weigh in the day of, but by that time they'd already made brackets and no one ever got shuffled.

Long story short, Doc had the nefarious habit of signing his 'dudes' up for weight classes about 20 lbs below their actual weight. By the time they weighed in, it was too late to do anything about it. But it sucked to wrestle these guys who were clearly way bigger than you. They would dominate these tournaments and looked like real studs, except they were winning by breaking one of the fundamental rules of the sport.

Of course, the HS team that they were associated was garbage. Which makes sense when you consider these kids cut their teeth always wrestling smaller opponents. Once they got to middle school and high school, with legit weigh-ins, they got owned against the level playing field.

Sorry for throwing that up on the board. I'm still just a bit bitter  >:(

EDIT: Wouldn't you know it, found an article about Doc Hodson. Appears they now give lifetime achievement awards to cheaters! How very nice  :P

The Johnnie game is first up before the Cobbs get their hands on the boys from Arden Hills... Is it just me or after looking at the box scores and play by play for the Johnnies that they are 3 plays away from being 0-3? Everyone knows the missed field goal at UST, but RF and EC are both games that they really could have lost. I didnt realize EC fumbled going into score at the end of the game.... The Cobbers could very well be facing a 0-3 team just as easy as a 3-0? But I suppose that is why you play the game. And good teams win close games.

Thoughts?

Well, if I were a Cobber I would be worried by the 3-0 team that could easily be 0-3.  They know how to win.  The Magic is with them.  Yoda (pre-prequel) says that fear them you must.

I beg to differ Oz, everyone knows that the Johnnies should be 0-3 heading into the cobber game.  Concordia should definitely be planning ahead for Arden Hills...   ;)

I always find it humerous when people on the board say things about "not looking past this week" like what we have to say on here matters or impacts what players are thinking.  If coaches and players are doing their jobs, I'm sure they are focused on the opponent at hand.

Of course we can look past current weeks in our discussions...that is part of the fun to be had here.  That said, I'm very excited for the BU matchup against Augsburg in a couple of weeks...that should be a good measuring stick for both teams.

Don't look past Carleton!!  Perennial power Hamline found that out the hard way last week.

faunch

Win: UW-River Falls Win

Win: UW-Eau Claire  Could go either way however I would pick SJU.  Johnnies beat UWEC last year and I would bet money that SJU is the more improved team going into the season.

Probable Loss: U$t. Thomas UST has to be the favorite...however 3 straight wins over SJU and everybody shoveling dirt on the Johnnies  and it being a rivalry game make this a dangerous game for U$T...Ramler also has coached against and beaten Caruso while at Carleton.  I'll gladly let U$T believe they've got this one in the bag.

Win: Concordia-Moorhead  I agree w/ Hazzbeen-"Concordia loses a lot of Seniors. Close game",...also it's Homecoming for the Jays...I think SJU wins

Win: St. Olaf I agree w/ Hazz again...battle of coaching staff changes...Johnnies have more talent returning than Olaf.

Probable Loss: Augsburg [Toss up...probably a loss...however when SJU played Augsburg last year they were in a tailspin...injuries and and zero confidence....I think by the sixth game of the season the Johnnies will be battle hardened and ready to challenge the Auggies

Win: Carleton

Win: Gustavus Adolphus

Win: Hamline

Probable Loss: Bethel [b]This game depends a lot on what both teams are playing for...playoff bids could be in the balance.

My prediction for SJU is at least 7-3...maybe 8-2

Took a look back at my predictions compared to Hazzbeen's prediction from the pre-season.  The more I think about it Ramler game plan was a huge part of the SJU win last Saturday.  That said the big win over the Tommies creates a dangerous situation for  the Johnnies this weekend against the Cobbers.  Can they emotionally bring it this weekend?  With the large Homecoming crowd it shouldn't be a problem and the fact that this team really hasn't proved anything yet.  The weather might be the "x" factor....showers and 60 degrees could minimize the impact of the crowd help the Cobbers running game.

Should the Johnnies be nervous playing the Cobbers? Or is the "magic" all they need. I might be new to the boards, but last I checked "magic" isn't real. There just seems to be a lot of faithful Johnnie fans that think it is.
Both. Look at history, the Johnnies & Cobbers play tight games quite often. The Johnnie fans (for the most part) have a healthy respect for the Cobbers.
BTW- Johnnie Magic is real, just ask some of the other long time Cobbers on this board- they can fill you in  ;)
It appears my posts from the 2005 Cobber/Johnnie game have vanished, but I'll fess up anyways.  I started to revel in the Johnnies losing when they were down 3 with 25 seconds left and no timeouts at their own 26.  Then Kofoed found Gearman for a 74 yard TD.  I don't know if you'll call it magic, but this wasn't a hail mary to the endzone, he still had to run it in 35 yards after the catch.
I believe that's the one we called 'The AO rally'     ;)
