I am quite certain THIS will be on Robert Zimmerman's Christmas list.

Duff - As a parent of 3 boys who played sports, I am the gratuitous bailee* of boxes of trophies from their efforts. Do your folks a favor and take them home to your basement next time you visit.

I'm pretty sure that's all that is left at their house.  My sister, on the other hand, still has half their basement full.  My dad is slowly bringing it all down to here house so he can reclaim his basement.

A tradition unrivaled...

The Johnnie game is first up before the Cobbs get their hands on the boys from Arden Hills... Is it just me or after looking at the box scores and play by play for the Johnnies that they are 3 plays away from being 0-3? Everyone knows the missed field goal at UST, but RF and EC are both games that they really could have lost. I didnt realize EC fumbled going into score at the end of the game.... The Cobbers could very well be facing a 0-3 team just as easy as a 3-0? But I suppose that is why you play the game. And good teams win close games.

Thoughts?

Well, if I were a Cobber I would be worried by the 3-0 team that could easily be 0-3.  They know how to win.  The Magic is with them.  Yoda (pre-prequel) says that fear them you must.

Should the Johnnies be nervous playing the Cobbers? Or is the "magic" all they need. I might be new to the boards, but last I checked "magic" isn't real. There just seems to be a lot of faithful Johnnie fans that think it is.
Both. Look at history, the Johnnies & Cobbers play tight games quite often. The Johnnie fans (for the most part) have a healthy respect for the Cobbers.
BTW- Johnnie Magic is real, just ask some of the other long time Cobbers on this board- they can fill you in  ;)
It appears my posts from the 2005 Cobber/Johnnie game have vanished, but I'll fess up anyways.  I started to revel in the Johnnies losing when they were down 3 with 25 seconds left and no timeouts at their own 26.  Then Kofoed found Gearman for a 74 yard TD.  I don't know if you'll call it magic, but this wasn't a hail mary to the endzone, he still had to run it in 35 yards after the catch.

It wasn't magic, just a missed holding call!  ;D

Tough times in Moorhead.

Defensive holding would not matter, the Johnnies would have declined the penalty and the touchdown would have stood.  ;D ;D

Well, we're all in the mood for a melody

One of my personal goals for 2013 is to get AO into positive ground on the karma scale.  I was responsible for many of dings he took while he was still a student at The University of Northwestern St. Paul Just off Snelling Avenue Actually in Roseville.  UNWSPJSAAR for short.  ;)
I'd like that kind of rally  :D

Come to think of it, I would like to see film on the Miracle in Moorhead again. It would be a great project for some enterprising intern in the SJU athletic department to dig up footage of the great plays of yesteryear and pair it with the archived Johnnies radio call. It would make for a great YouTube montage.

I'm a firm believer in Johnnie Magic. In all reality it's more a belief than anything cosmic but the number of examples make it hard to disagree with.

Focusing on examples that live on in the YouTube age (with the exception of 2003), here are some of the best.
:
2013 - Wide Left: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZpHjtsXUDU

2009 - 49yd FG (almost) at the gun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU4ArelPSiA
2009 - UST in OT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW6jFZeUqUs

2008 - Entire season culminating with unexpected MIAC title. Best documented in the final play to beat Carleton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=rskvYum4IFY#t=35
2008 - UST no TD & fumble: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh1BEC7Tcaw
This is the better video of the UST plays featuring Mr Gaylord Mike Max: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oNrQAYmeWw

2003 - #2 in the nation survives: http://gojohnnies.com/custompages/Statistics/Football/2003/110103.htm

I know there are other examples, and probably some that are on YouTube, but these are the latest and greatest.

I just have to pull this picture forward because it is too damn funny. I'd say the "Caruso Crew" as they call themselves put more effort in to making the oversized tools then they ever did towards freshman English.  ;)

BDB. They are seminarians. They've been showing up to games way before UST was good. They have an odd amount of enthusiasm, but you can't blame them for the effort.

And as far as seminaries go, Vianney is the best in the country over the last decade.  It's things like this that set them apart. Might make you laugh, but it works in that world.

Now that is impressively clever. His whole career would already be digitized so there is nothing to lose to copying by publishing it all digital again, but the delivery mechanism - the signature harmonica shaped thumb drive available from china for $.30 each delivered - is a stroke of genius. The music is virtually worthless because of pirating but the actually worthless harmonica USB stick is sold for the price of the entire Dylan collection. Mr Dylan is an impressively clever fella.

Thats a close race for play of the week.

I think the Auggie Tech play shows the most athleticism.  Cobber play is pretty solid.  I was hoping for some kind of trick play from the SJU video, but it's just a running back going untouched for 40 yds.

It is a guess, but I am thinking the SJU O-line is just a little proud of that clip.  Conversely, I wonder how many times GC showed this play at Plums during his weekly film study, just asking!

I think the film is pretty clear.  The Tommie's screwed up....on both sides of the center, a linemen and backer both filled the b gaps.

O.K. The vote this week needs to be clarified in that it is a vote between three "plays" of the week and one "non-play" of the week.  If you enjoyed the non-play of UST vote for SJU.
