The NESCAC not participating in the football playoffs is a "We want to be like the Ivy League" issue.

I see there's an article on the front page of d3football.com that says there will be 5 pool C spots and not 4 as everyone was previously saying. The article goes into how the misunderstanding happened. The important point being we can go back to cheering for three 9-1 teams now.

Interesting. Anyone know why the NESCAC doesn't accept an auto bid? Is it an academics or budget issue? Good news for the MIAC and the dream of 3 playoff teams.

Definition of Cognitive Dissonance:

It's too taxing academically for the football players. Anything more than 8 games would make it impossible for these student-athletes to fulfill their classroom obligations. But we'll still send our basketball squads out to play multiple games each week and compete in the NCAA tournament. They can handle 25+ contests spanning two semesters  ::)

So, my question is if a NESCAC team receives a pool C bid, are they allowed to accept it? Or do league rules prohibit any playoff (football) competition?
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

Definitely not a budget issue.  Also pretty silly to think that 1 team playing 1 more game on a Saturday would be an academic issue.

I asked the NESCAC board this question a while back, and they talked about how the conference only allows teams to practice a certain number of hours per week. The administration would much rather have their students in the classroom than the practice field. So they would rather not play a school outside the conference, because they would be at a severe disadvantage.

However the NESCAC basketball (and baseball) programs are some of the best in the country....not sure why they draw the line with football.

It's almost like they assume they won't win...so they don't even want to try.  :-\

The NESCAC will not allow the school to accept the offer.

Finally, I think the tourney is going to have a distinct mid-west feel about it this year as I suspect that there will be three 10 and 0 teams, one each from the MIAC, WIAC and CCIW. I also suspect that there will be three 9 and 1 teams from each of those conferences all ranked in the top 25. I'll go on record as stating the obvious, that there will be no 8 and 2 Pool C teams in the tourney this year.
Oh sure and now I imagine you will tell us there is no Santa Claus.

I'll second that. That second loss is a death wish this season. It'll be strange to see UST and Wesley out of the post season this year (Much like UWW last year).

The NESCAC will not allow the school to accept the offer.

To ask from another angle...Could a team, say Trinity, simply say we're going, screw what the conference says? Put another way, who accepts the bid, the team or the conference? If it's the latter, then it's not even possible. If it's the former, a team could technically accept and face the wrath of the conference, along with the consequences. I have no idea which one it is...

Not really, in the case of St. Thomas.  They're a relative newbie, first appearance being 2009.

Does that also explain the history of Carleton & MAC football.

Funny he didn't say.....(much like SJ1 the last 4 years).

I'll take relative newbie as a compliment, in the vein of its what you've done for me lately that matters

And if we finish 7-3 this year, well that will be on par with SJ1's 2004 record, so can't be that down of a year.
The last shall be first and the shall be.......

I'm hoping that SJU follows Linfield's example of being four or five years in the wilderness and the three or so years and back to the top of the pile. It's hard to remember those Linfield wilderness years as an outsider now. I'm sure Linfield's supporters remember well enough, but it's all forgotten by me as I see them up on top of the rankings.
