Ok.  I admit it.  It's me.  I stopped the streaming.  There was a vote on '11 which was very, very close and I put in a 'No'.  I thought it was for alumni to have the opportunity to purchase 'Strea Ming', which is Chinese for panda testicles.  I've been too scared to admit it to you guys until now.

And you've got us feelin' alright.

Our beloved Johnnies had a bye week. How can you tell? The webcast debate has broken out again. I tend to agree that utilizing webcasts is necessary and it will ultimately benefit the University. Unfortunately speed is not a core Benedictine Value (at least I assume it isn't). Even though the University and Abbey have technically separated as legal entities the school is still deeply rooted in monastic values. At times that can be a hurdle to progress and adopting new opportunities.

I think a big piece that could make a change here is the fact John is no longer the head coach. For so long the exposure his profile brought in provided similar benefits to all the hypothetical positives that have been mentioned with webcasting. I imagine being an alum located outside the Midwest and seeing an SJU/Gags story in the NYTimes or on ESPN provided a similar connection to watching a webcast. The benefit of the national exposure is those alums could share/brag to friends.

John is now gone and so is that larger than life narrative. TVFury wrote about this in one of his preseason blogs. Now Gary has had some good success in year one and optimism for the future is building. However, I think he's had just as many local TV stories done on him as John has. My count for each is 1, both by KSTP. In order to continue building on year one momentum what will be done? Those of us on the board most likely don't know but it I think the leaders and administration at SJU have to recognize the story of Gary selling St John's is different than John's. Are expanded or more webcasts part of that evolution? Time will tell and it will be interesting.

Hard to have one of the premier settings and guys from Mater Dei or De la Salle high schools can't be exposed to a game.
I have been on the NWC board complaining about paying $12.95 per game.
Would you folks gladly pay that? $15?

Maybe, but I think that's a bit rich. General admission is $7 and radio is free. I would look for a price point at the general admission level.

The quality of the broadcast matters a great deal.
STRETCH internet can buffer all the time occasionally. No money back.
Case Western had/has a great production. (Bethel is good too. Should be happy you won with all of us watching)

It's the Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne.  Tomorrow Mrs Oz and I are going to the Victoria Derby at Flemington Race Track with some friends.  We'll see if mostly sober adults can have fun at a spectacular booze fest.  But Tuesday the wife and I will be in the The Birdcage for the Melbourne Cup, the world's biggest two mile race.  I'm not a horse racing guy by I take the graft when it comes.

The Birdcage... I'll be concentrating hard on the horses...

Nothing has been confirmed that I know of. Usually news out of Augsburg is hard to obtain and that is by design I believe. Keep 'em guessing CT! I am waiting to see if he is on the two deep roster this afternoon myself.

Just as I thought... trying to confirm my picks :P Ayrton is a talented kid and his performance will affect the out come for sure, but to give the Auggies (+29.5) vs. UST ??? ??? I think the odds makers know something ;D

Good Luck OldAuggie... Let me know, if you don't mind when the two deep comes out!

Thanks!

To add one more voice to the neverending debate -- which will probably last as long as should priests marry -- I actually don't really care about a video stream, even out here in NYC. I know that puts me in the minority and the arguments in favor of them are spot on (fans want them, parents of kids from far away want them, it's the 21st century get with the times, etc.). No debate there. And I'm not saying this to be a Slate contrarian. Just for whatever reason it's never been something I've been desperate to have. When the Johnnies' games are actually streamed on the road I rarely watch and I'm guessing it'd be the same at home. Part of it's my old computer that doesn't play them well, certainly. But I'm fine listening or following live stats and doing six other things around the apartment. Anyway.

Some Hamline love!

This was in the Strib today:
Quote
Piper milestone: Hamline sophomore Austin Duncan rushed for 190 yards in 37 carries in the Pipers' loss to St. Thomas to become the first MIAC player this season and the first Hamline player since 1996 to surpass 1,000 rushing yards. Duncan has 1,047 yards with three games remaining. The Pipers' school record is 1,290 set in 1996 by Eric Johnson.

Congrats to Duncan but, no offense to Duncan, I really hope he doesn't get the record. The former record holder, Eric Johnson, is my cousin's husband and is an all-around great dude. Assistant coach at Andover. Played at Hamline when the Pipers were a real threat. Was on the '94 team that beat the Johnnies and still talks about losing to the Ramler-led Johnnies in the final moments in 1996.

I'd probably watch if I didn't go due to weather, but the majority of the time, if I don't go, I'm working on things around home (or camping, or fishing, or hunting).  For that, the radio is the ticket.

A tradition unrivaled...

Plus a video stream that I could see with my own eyes would ruin the illusion that SJU opponents get away with more should-have-been-called-but-weren't penalties than anyone, the Johnnies defense leads the nation in near-interceptions and are the victims of the worst spots of the ball in the country.
