I actually liked the play call discussion.  The questioner probably doesn't have the ability to call a better game but you can certainly ask a coach if he would call something else given another chance or where he believes the execution of the play broke down.  Maybe, just maybe, the Gustavus defense might have done something right.

This is a fine point and I agree.  But the time to do that doesn't seem to be yelling from the stands when the coach is trying to explain to his offense what the NEXT play call has to be and where the previously play broke down.

OzJohnnie, you are correct.  I guess I just wish that fans would just be FANS then.  Supportive of the team and coaching staff rather than destructive.  Wishful thinking, I know.

Lest you think I come off as "Only I, the former player, have the right to critique the plays called and yell at the players to do things better!" - I apply this same standard to myself as a fan.  I never yell at the coaches to call different plays or yell anything but encouragement to players.  I'm at the game as a fan.  I'm just going to be a fan.
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

I'm the first to admit my knowledge of football is limited to what I've learned as an observer over 50+ years.  That doesn't keep me from sometimes thinking I'm smarter than the coach.  But I only go as far as thinking it and maybe asking someone I do consider knowledgeable.  I don't yell at the coach or players.  The calling out of Jimmy Gagaliardi from the stands was out of line.  I try to sit with someone who is very knowledgeable to tell me I'm right or wrong, and often times explain to me what the hell just happened.  Like the Bungum play against Gustavus.  ???  I also often ask a friend who was a DIII ref for a long time about why certain things were ruled the way they were.  And discover, again, I don't know what I'm talking about.

I attended the Johnnie/Augsburg game last year and sat next to a former DIII All-American and behind another guy who knows his football.  This guys sitting behind us, a Johnnie supporter, ran his mouth the whole game.  Don't know if he ever played at the college level or not.  It was highly annoying and disrespectful.  I'm there to enjoy the game and support the KIDS.

This is not life and death, it's not DI, it's not the NFL.  If you want to run your mouth the whole game, go stand behind the goal line, as far away from me as possible.  Please.

, but I can barely sit in the stands at any football game, I usually prefer to stand down in one endzone at HS/college games so I don't have to listen to that nonsense.

Can I vent?

I'm really bummed that the Johnnie season is over. It's going to finish better than I expected (the Victory over UST was sweet) but not as well as I hoped. I had hoped that we would go into the BU game still playing for the championship. I only got thr hope after we were able to string a bunch of mid-season wins together.

So we go into the last game (hopefully) looking for a very good 8-2 finish. Regardless of the outcome I really enjoyed this season. I found myself cheering for the best rather than fearing the worst which was a nice change from previous years.  And now when we go into the dead rubber and I think we will have a slight chance to pull it out which is more than we've had in quite a while.

I'm not really arguing here, just observing that if the stands were only full of ex-players well versed in the subtleties of the game then there wouldn't be many people around to cheer when there's a score.

Very true Oz. I loved the fan, parent and student body support we got at Bethel. Coach J would actually go out of his way to make sure the freshman football guys weren't all in the same dorm or on the same floor. He thought it was great to build relationships with the wider campus body. It stirred interest and support when it's your buddy from the down the hall who is getting his first start or playing on special teams.

That said, it is really annoying when people get obnoxiously vocal about stuff they don't know or yell at the coaches and players. My dad's been a longtime HS & college football umpire. I love watching games with him to get his take. As a guy who's been around the game a ton, it's still amazing how many nuances of the rule book I don't understand. But that doesn't stop me from yelling at the refs when the royally screw things up  ;D

Didn't UST already do this with all the people who sit in the special, elevated seats behind the visitors bench  ;D 8-)

Regarding play-calling, I think we can all agree that Schnelker needs to be fired.

Honestly, I don't see what the upside is for Gary doing the chats, especially if they devolve into what they're apparently becoming. This week's one was especially eye-rolling. I respect him for doing it and it's admirable and of course some interesting insight. But again, I see no upside. Will it help recruiting? I can't see "our coach does live chats" winning out over 25 other reasons that go into picking a school. Does it give the fans insight into the program they might not have? Yeah. And so what? When it becomes a complaining fest filled with moronic questions and calling out individual guys who are surely reading it as well, I don't see the benefit. Or Gary having to answer questions about his staff. Keeping things in-house and all is harder to do when you have to finesse, which he does perfectly, those types of inquiries. Does Gary leave these things in a good mood? "Yeah, it was fun touching base with those passionate fans!"

Someone did actually ask him in this one if he'd continue to participate and Gary said he'd continue to and loves the passion. And he probably means it. Or, it's, "She has a great personality."

Gary has to be so self-deprecating on half the answers -- "that's on me, that's my responsibility" -- that it's like he's flogging himself throughout the chat (metaphorically, of course. I hope).

I guess it's like coach's call-in shows, like Tom Kelly with Sid, etc. But the most exciting part of those was listening to TK belittle someone's knowledge or having Sid yell at some "genius." Gary's not going to call out the people asking questions, though it'd be delightful and there's no Sid there to say, hey, idiot. I don't know, maybe SJURube can become a guest moderator and turn it into a free-for-all by calling out the morons.

But I could see Gary eventually ending them, even with what he said today. And I think it'd be totally understandable and maybe even smart.

Where do I signup? Do I have to donate more to SJU? What's the magic number? Whatever it is I'll make it happen.

And I thought I was the only sports idiot magnet out there. I guess there are more than just the doofusi that sit near me.

On a related note, How about the fans (usually NFL) that boo when there is a "Review of the previous play." Gee, they look at it from every angle, in Slo Mo, in the effort to get it right, and 99.999% of the time they do, yet the fans boo when it goes against their team. Do they think they get together and say, let's take the time , delay the game, make the fans think we're actually trying to get it right, but screw it we'll make the wrong call anyhow?

OzJohnnie

Doofusi. I like that word and look forward to using it.

Fan is short for fanatic: a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal.

Part of the fun of being a fan is being irrational. My team, do or die. That doesn't excuse the doofusi (there is obviously no excuse for boorish behavior and it's glorification is my primary complaint against modern entertainment television) but it also means it can be fun booing against video ref.
