Nice turnout at the Dome today - 7500 in attendance! Not bad when you consider everyone is paying and it's off campus. Then again, the cozy 72 degrees certainly didn't hurt things  :)

I knew it was a big crowd - wow! anyone know if this is a record attendance for a Bethel game?

The reported attendance for the 2007 SJU-Bethel game @ Royals Stadium was published as 10,025 in the box score.

Record crowd at the Bank today despite the weather.  Had to be rough playing based on how cold I was in the stands after the sun set.

Peterson had a great day. 25-27 for 300 and 4 TD's. Hallstrom and Marquardt both over a 100 yds receiving and rushing, respectively. Hilbrands had a nice day as well. Team looked locked in. A few big plays in the passing game, but on the whole, the D played well.

Next team up, better than the last:

Wartburg looked tough. Didn't throw much at all, but they didn't need to. Dominated the LOS on both sides. Ran it down IWU's throat all day. D made big plays. They were much more physical and came to play.

Should be a good game next week. Both teams seem to be playing their best ball right now.

Is it possible to get back to the Dome if Bethel advances next week. Looks like there's some good karma for them there.

In the post-game interview Coach J said something about a monster truck rally at the Dome the following week. So...I guess not  :-\

But yeah, there was some nice mojo there today. My bigger concern is where we play next week. I'm assuming in Arden Hills, unless I hear otherwise

I remember that being a great game to be at - had to show up a couple of hours early just to get a place to sit. I assume that that would be the record for a Bethel 'home' game, but I would say the record for any game Bethel has played in would be the SJU game in 2003 when Gags set the record for most wins for a coach which had a published attendance of 13,107.

....I thought for sure Linfield would be meeting Bethel in the Quarter Final!

The '03 game was an NCAA single-game attendance record until 2010 when the Johnnie-Tommie game drew 16,421 at Clemens Stadium.

There is no NCAA single-game attendance record as the stat is not tracked at the Division III level.

Great game at the Mall of America field yesterday.
Looks like we may need some help in getting Royal Stadium's field ready for next Saturday's game:

Bethel next plays host on Saturday to Wartburg College, a team the Royals beat 30-17 on Sept. 14 in the season opener.

Alas, the rematch won't be at the Dome. The Prep Bowl will be held next week and a monster truck rally the next weekend.

So Bethel and St. Scholastica will probably be the last college football teams to play in the Dome before it's demolished.

"We kind of had to put that on the shelf,'' Johnson said of a return to the Dome, "and we're figuring out ways to heat our field with a lot of blow dryers from all the gals ... and Mitch.''

Go Royals!

That game is ancient history at this point. Both teams have grown and changed since that point, plus the weather and field conditions will be another new variable.

One thing that sticks out about the first meeting was the fact that Bethel got several TO's early that they converted into points. They were up big, fast, forcing Wartburg to throw to get back into things. After watching the IWU game, it's pretty clear Wartburg's preference is to run the ball as much as possible. They couldn't do that the first time around because of how the game got started. Wartburg's ability to run and run effectively will be a key to the game. Either Bethel getting out in front early again and forcing Wartburg to play catchup OR being able to stop their run game, which we didn't really have to do for the full game the first time.

More fun with the brackets

Just for giggles (because there is not a lot of weight that should be given to this exercise) I added up all the winning scores versus the losing scores in the brackets. Then I did some simple algebraic computations and came of with the following:

Bethel bracket 228 to 47
difference of 181 points
47 x 100 divided by 228 = 20.6%
228 divided by 47 = 4.85 (for every point the loser scored, the winner scored 4.85 points - on average)

Mary Hardin Baylor bracket 118 to 30
difference of 88 points
30 x 100 divided by 118 = 25.4%
118 divided by 30 = 3.93 (for every point the loser scored the winner scored 3.93 points - on average)

Whitewater bracket 132 to 72
difference of 60 points
72 x 100 divided by 132 = 54.5%
132 divided by 72 = 1.83 (for every point the loser scored the winner scored 1.83 points - on average)

Mount Union bracket 141 to 78
difference of 63 points
78 x 100 divided by 141 = 55.3%
141 divided by 78 = 1.80 (for every point the loser scored the winner scored 1.8 points - on average)

The reason you cannot put a lot of weight behind these numbers is because some of the games were "more even" than others and these numbers simply bear that out. There is no way anyone could reasonably think that the winning teams in the Bethel bracket are more than twice as good as the winners in the Mount Union bracket.

But they do give us another perspective in which to look at the remaining field of play-off teams.

I'm sure the Mathis brothers have a couple they could donate to such a cause.  When this team takes their helmets off they look like an '80s hair band convention.  Hallstrom is one of the few kids on the team with anything even resembling a haircut...classic Coach J.

Probably followed that with a "wait, what?  Ah dude..." ;D

My first thought wasn't that those teams were better, but that they were in a weak bracket.
My second thought was that you must be a baseball fan.  ;D
