Is there a link available to watch that Gagliardi special? I've only seen bits and pieces of it...and I would really wish to see the entire program.

Thanks

Oz - Is all of the recent awareness about concussions and their long lasting effect having any impact on Aussie rules football?

Yeah, it is. They are trying to ease into addressing the issue as unprotected collisions are the essential fabric of the game.  I reckon the difference in liability laws here will end up taking it a different way than in the US. I'm not exactly sure but a claimant can only get paid for actual losses - there are no punitive damages. So I suspect that player contracts will waive liability for injury (they probably already do) and the AFL will en up with some sort of pension system worked out with the players' association.

The real question is amateur football. The amateur leagues can barely stay above water normally. If they end up having to buy insurance to cover a virtually guaranteed liability it will be the end of footy. After asbestos I don't think insurance companies walk into 50 year liabilities anymore. I can't imagine the price for coverage.

Piers Morgan, for those of you that may watch CNN, was lipping off to a retired Aussie cricket fast bowler, Brett Lee.  In his hey day Lee could bowl at just short of 100 mph.  So Morgan ends up in the nets at the MCG (nets are for warm ups) during a break in Australia v England action and he faced 6 balls from Lee. Lee can only hit the low 90's now. Oh, and bean ball is a legal and key part of the fast bowler's game.

OUCH!  :o

Morgan has tweeted his injury report from yesterday's session in the nets: a cracked wrist, bruised rib and huge lump on the back of his head (when he got beaned in warmups from one of Lee's mates).

He could have been killed. Literally. Dumb.

Watching the Texas Bowl yesterday evening reminded me why I do not become emotionally invested in the Minnesota Gophers. They won 9 games in 2003, then you have to go back to 1905- yes....1905 for another 9 win season. Pathetic! Meanwhile, talent leaves the state to go to Wisconsin,Iowa,Notre Dame,Michigan, Nebraska,North Dakota....Can you blame those kids? They want to win. It doesn't seem to matter who the coach is...isn't this the point where Glen Mason was fired? Front load the schedule with cupcake teams, pray to the All Mighty that you win 3 Big 10 games and go to a meaningless Bowl game. That is the formula for success at the University of Minnesota.

Rant over, continue talking about D3 Football, ice fishing, beer, whiskey, cricket and movie trivia.  ;D
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

There was an article in my paper about the fortunes of the Gophers. While the players and coaches are optimistic about joining the elites in the Big Ten (or however many there are), objective viewers say that the facilities and amenities at Minnesota lag so far behind all others, they are at a distinct disadvantage in recruiting It would take massive expenditures and years to catch up, and until they do, 8 or 9 wins a season appears to be their ceiling, according to the article.

I have heard similar reports. So back to releasing Mason after a collapse in a Bowl game years back- the buyout of the contracts of Mason & the hiring & subsequent buyout of Brewster's contract could have been put toward practice facilities. Not saying that Mason could lead any team to becoming a major power BUT if they Gophers ever want to be relevant they will need to put money into the facilities and that would require a couple of major donors committing cash for the long term. There seems to be an attitude of "getting to a Bowl game (or in the case of basketball- making the NCAA field of 64) is good enough of us"- a sad situation for a success starved state- pro or major college. If not for Men's & Women's hockey,Women's volleyball & occasionally Baseball & Wrestling Minnesota is a wasteland for major championships.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

if you want to go back to 1905, you have to count the 6 national titles earned since then.  The number of games played per season also changed from 8 in the 40s to the first time they played 12 in 1999.  If the punter kicks it out of bounds last night, everything is looking good for the future.

AO you seem to be more optimistic than some of us. I agree if the punt is kicked away from that kid they win but the Gophers had all types of misplays/bad coaching last night and if they somehow win that game the qb situation would still look bleak.

Oh, NOOOOooooooooes!!!1!1!11

Mrs Oz just pointed out that the Johnnie-Tommie game which I'm coming back to see this year conflicts with the Grand Final which I expect Hawthorn to win.  Dang.  Tommies suck in so many ways it's hard for a person to count them all.

Nay! 'Tis impossible to count all of the ways.

I was at a wedding on Friday, and a "Tommies suck" chant broke out.  Of course, one of those dirty, rotten, scoundrels tried to sneak into our CSB/SJU alum photo.  Jealousy, I guess.  :-*

It's that time of the year in the NFL:
Rob Chudzinski out for the Browns
Leslie Fraizer out for the Vikings
Mike Shanahan out for the Redskins

I'm sure there will be more in the hours & days to come  :P

I think Mike Grant is a shoe in for one of the jobs.  His dad was once the Vikings coach.
