Double O,

The only thing that I have heard is that Glenn has hired a offensive coordinator for the 2014 season... (I Don't know who it is...?)

CT-Just stirring the pot...wanted to make sure all those J's aren't completely in hibernation! Good talk.

I was wondering if anyone can explain to me why D3 doesnt have a signing day? I understand the no scholarship part....but even the walk on kids at the d2 level sign letters of admission that can be announced. Just wondering cuz im a noooooooooooob to the d3 stuff.

I should lead off by saying there is some talk by the Division III membership about adding a signing. It would have to be non-binding, though, not an NLI, and that's the reason why we don't have one now. Division III rules prohibit a school or coach from talking about a prospect until they have enrolled (generally, paid their deposit). Basically all the announcements you hear about kids coming to D-III schools are from the kid himself or herself, or the kid's high school.

Could we make something binding? I don't think so. Doesn't seem in keeping with the Division III philosophy. But could we help kids publicize themselves and make them think coming to a D-III school and playing a sport is a good thing? Yeah, I think we could and should do that.

I think in today's day, with social media and the need for acknowledgment that today's "utes" seem to have. I think it would be great if D3 had a "signing day" At least would let me brag about nephews and what not!

Here's Frank's article about the new SJU players:

http://www.sctimes.com/article/20140205/SPORTS04/302050047/Times-player-year-join-SJU-football-team?nclick_check=1

Miller's a big wide receiver.  Has anyone seen him play?  Can he stretch the field?

Decide for yourself.

Messman is a very good pickup for SJU, tough kid, and comes from a good family....although I will predict that he is not playing QB by the time he sees the field for the Johnnies, unless they intend to have a system that features a run first QB.

At the HS level, he was physically developed enough to be good just because he was bigger faster and stronger than others, but that won't hold for next year, and he's not a skilled enough passer to excel there.

Maybe a RB?  But I would be that he is a starting LB in the future.

Edit: Also, he has a brother who is a year younger and is a very good player...wouldn't be shocked if he follows Mitch to SJU in 2015.

Don't like it.  Let the kids post their intention on Twitter and Facebook or whatever social media app they like best.  IMO opinion D3 should be more about celebrating what makes D3 different than D2 and above and not trying to be like them.

Twitter and Facebook are plenty for us D3 kids.

In other news, my sister's friend's brother is going to have a press conference where he will announce his intention to play intramural underwater checkers at St. Cloud Technical College.

I'm with Pat.  After watching the Jeff Jones press conference, it would have made a lot more sense if they had the students cheer for their fellow classmate who was accepted to Carleton or Harvard.  The coach gave a talk before Jeff's announcement mostly about how lucky Jeff was to be born with this athletic talent and he should be applauded for doing the bare minimum in the classroom to become eligible for a scholarship.

Some of those trophies are smaller than others. You are such an unfair tyrant. How will anyone know they are special unless they are all exactly the same?

Who needs smarts when you've got athletic talent? (coming from a guy who was blessed with more of the former than the latter)

I've become jealous the past few years because the Worthington Daily Globe now reports on kids who sign letters of intent to go to Minnesota West. When I went there to play basketball there was no letter, no announcement in the paper. And I actually don't know what the hell a letter of intent does at a junior college, especially because MN West is a nonscholarship school (there are juco divisions that give them). My uncle coaches there and one time he said something, I think, about it being a fairly new thing but something they actually do have to do, for some reason. Could have had myself a little table set up in Janesville, my coach at my side. Or I would have also had hats from Bethany and Rochester and then pulled out the Worthington while the crowd -- my parents -- clapped.

Tonight was the first game of the AFL pre-season, Geelong v Collingwood, and it was a surprisingly hard affair. Numerous injuries, a few season ending, including a shattered jaw.  Geelong staff were out on the field at halftime searching for Burbury's missing teeth.

Warning: this video is hard viewing.

After the carnage in this match I expect coaching staff will be turning down aggressiveness a bit.

I believe you mean "to nearly become eligible"... things I'm hearing say his academic side isnt exactly eligible (ACT score) but the family was told "no need to worry about that. It can be taken care of."  Try imagining Gags, Caruso, Fasching, Johnson, etc saying that--- impossible!

Would they have clapped with one hand or both?  :)

To me, the whole press conference/announcement is a crock of self-laudatory BS, but my presser would have been even more poorly attended that SFury's  :)
