Retired Old Rat

Here's an article from the SC Times on Bob Dumonceaux's retirement.  "Dr. D" fathered several outstanding Johnnie football players, and he and his family have been a fixture on the chain gang at Clemen's Stadium for a long time.  Interestingly, he was my dad's academic adviser as well as a math professor of mine.  He's had quite the career, and he's a helluva guy!

Not being a math guy, I took only one class (statistics) from Dr. D.  Never really liked that kind of thing, but he made the class enjoyable and me successful in the class.  I check the visiting sideline every game to be sure Dr. D. and his large sons, and grandchildren, are manning the chains.  Big loss for SJU, but well deserved retirement.  I hope he's not retiring as the senior member of the chain gang.

Does anyone have a status update on the search for an offensive coordinator at SJU?
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

You could argue that job falls to the Rat Pack and how they keep the TOMMIES SUCK! chant healthy and in unison year after year.

I think it was my junior year that a friend of mine from the Bahamas was a TA for Dr. D (1989ish).  He was invited to dinner at the Dumonceaux's house at the end of first term and I was invited out as well because I had a car.  My main recollection was that there was a whole lot of kids at that house and some young lads that already very well put together.

No doubt this has been embellished over the years but heard a story nearly 40 years ago that during his undergrad days, Dr. D was noted for swinging on a rope over a SJU hockey game ... back in the early/mid-60s when the rink was outdoor near where Joe Hall used to stand.

Could be complete BS, but a nice story nonetheless.

For you pups, here is Joe Hall:

Joe Hall is still around; they just moved it to put in Sexton Commons.  It now sits above the pottery studio.

I sent Frank R a Twitter message today...he said, "Nothing official yet. Probably this week though or next at the latest."
You might say I'm all a twitter.

My guess: In the tradition of long standing Johnnie coaches... one of the head coaches from a St Cloud area high school.

Not sure when the schedules came out on D3 Football's home page, but they are there now. The MIAC has only one non-conference game this year when Concordia Moorehead plays Jamestown, ND. Everyone else managed to find D3 schools to play in their off weeks for some interesting match-ups.  Bethel plays Chicago this year - not sure they've ever played against one another before. Carleton is playing Knox and Gustavus travels to Lake Forest. Nothing unusual in the remaining pair-offs that I can see. As Macalester moves into the UMAC, they only play Hamline and Carleton at the beginning of the season. Looking forward to the boys of fall taking the field once again.

In the two weeks since Geelong beat Hawthorn we have seen a familiar drama. Hawthorn have destroyed Richmond and St Kilda (beating the poor Saints yesterday by 175 - 30) in their anger while Geelong has dropped a game against Port Adelaide and barely beat Richmond. So we now have Hawthorn back on top of the standings by a long, long way with the league's best offence (by a country mile, averaging 127 pts a game) and also the best defence (conceding 70 pts on average).

This year the Hawks have a devestatingly good team with the potential to be the best team footy has ever seen. If only they can figure out how to beat the Cats.

Macalester actually joined the MWC, which is up one step from the UMAC on the ladder of West Region football conferences. They and the SCIAC pretty regularly battle for the privilege of being third-worst.
