Game of Thrones.  Anyone watch it?

I used to be a big fantasy nut back in high-school but haven't had the energy for anything beyond re-reading Tolkien for 20 years.  I watched the first few episodes of Game of Thrones and it didn't really catch me.  But then a friend convinced me to go back and give season one a try again.  I'll buy the books now and read them.  It's a brutal show but the vibe of the show is really engaging.  It's full of b*st*rds who continually get ahead with the odd character that you start to like.  But beware: as soon as you like someone that's a sure sign they are about to get it (most likely in the neck.  And bloody.).  The season four finale is coming up next week and there are about five characters, a couple formerly b*st*rds, that I'm anticipating a 2 or 3 person kill.  After the main character slaughters at the end season's 1 and 3 I would be more surprised if the good guys live (like they did at the end of season 2).

Anyway, it sure has caught my imagination, this show.

A friend of mine lent me the DVDs for season 1 and 2.  I started watching one episode at a time but before you knew it I was watching 2 or 3 so I finished both seasons in a couple of weeks.  I'm completely hooked and I'm waiting for him to finish season 3 so I can watch that.

I love the season three finish. The second best "no way, they just didn't do that" moment in television.  I don't want to spoil it so make sure to keep your ears shut.

Example A why you should always read the books after and not before watching the movie/tv series.

Shaking my head. Every few months, I read a post from AO and think he's turned a corner. Then he writes something like this, and I'm ashamed to 'know' him all over again  :o

Allow me to re-write your review if you had watched and read in the correct order:

I've read all the books and seen the HBO show. Both are excellent. There's a good deal of bonus texture in the books.

Hats off to HBO for fully committing to the project. And to the writers and directors for doing a great job keeping the multiple plot lines from getting convoluted.

Really, AO?  This is the hill you choose to die on?

I'm too disturbed from tonight's Fargo to think about climbing any hills.  Sorry that my opinion offended you and Hazz.

I've been engaged in all the Stanley Cup Playoff games. I was looking forward to a 7 game finals, double overtime each game. Now it looks like it might be a sweep.  :P

bennie, where are you?   ???

I, too have been engaged. I usually stop watching when there are no teams left for which I have any attachment. This year, the games have been so good, I, at least check in to every one at some time.

The Kings are clearly the better team, but, save a few bounces, they could have been down 2 - 0. I doubt they could have won Game 3, even though they, again, got some bad breaks. LA just played so well. Now it's not even in doubt. The only question is whether the Rangers can win one.

Wow.  The Essendon footy club was hammered tonight.  The Australian doping agency issued 34 players with show cause notices.  22 players take the field each weekend.  The club was running a systematic, experimental and uncontrolled drug program.  They were caught at the beginning of last year's season.  Could be the near end of the side.  Their entire senior side bar 2 players, I think (one a free agent picked up after the event and another a guy that feared needles), have been served notices and it looks like half of their minor league side as well.

This won't drag out as long as Lance Armstrong, but it will go a while.  I think these poor guys are toast.  And then when they sue the club for damages after they are all banned for life...  Yowsa.  Kubiak's Aussie special forces mate will have to pick a new side.  I've got one he can follow...

I'm about 120 pages away from finishing A Storm of Swords (book 3) which leaves me pretty close to lock step with the TV series as possible.  I debated on if I should watch Sunday's finale first or finish the book.  Wife said I should finish the book.

I enjoy both tremendously and last week's episode was great.  Some people bitched that they don't care about the Night's Watch storyline but the series is called "A Song of Ice and Fire" and what's beyond the wall is a larger threat to Westeros than anything the Lannister's can come up with.  I would think the Wall not being breached is vital to the overall storyline arc.

For my fellow GoT nerds here are a few great YouTube vids if you haven't seen them:

Game of Thrones: Complete History and Lore Part I
Game of Thrones: Complete History and Lore Part II

Some people are complaining about last week's episode?  Do they also complain about the air we breath?  That was stupendously epic and gripping television. The way they managed to keep the tension so high as you dreaded the wall breaching was impressive.  I had two thoughts at the end of the episode: I can't believe they spent a whole hour on just that battle and it seemed like only 15 minutes, and next week is going to be really quick as there are six, possibly seven, story lines that need to be wrapped up for off season storage in one hour. It's going to be an acton packed thrill ride.

66 minutes season finale.  Longest episode in show history!
