According to our intern, Auggie Tech will be the team to watch.  :-*
I hear they've had some great strength gains from their off-season concrete and bottle throwing program.

Augsburg should be much improved over last year if they can avoid injuries. Last year Scott basically played at 50% after the Bethel game for the remainder of the year. With Scott at 100% and with Sonnenfeld to stretch the defense, we will see some scoring. The defense should be improved with Duff's Intern back on the D line and if Juberian is back then look out, he should be a serious force in the middle. Kid is good. So he threw a few rocks and maybe a bottle, big deal.

Even though Bethel is the highest ranked MIAC team in the preseason poll at #7 they may still be underestimated.  This year they may have a good enough offense to go with their usual strong defense to make a serious run at the national championship.

I'd like to see who they have to throw to this year. Bethel throwing the ball well is still a relatively new phenomenon and I'd like some on-field evidence that they have the next wave of receivers in order to reload at that position.

Yeah, that would be my question too, in regard to how good they'll be.  Having Peterson back running the offense should make it easier for some new receivers to emerge, but they're basically replacing the entire group....I think Bryce Marquardt was the only underclassman to get much time at receiver last year.  Hallstrom in particular, being a guy who really helped the offense move, will be tough to replace.

I'm sure they'll miss Mathis on D too...he made a lot of plays for them.  The cool weather the past few days certainly had me thinking fall and football.  BU's opening date with Wartburg will definitely be a tough first game.

I'm curious if anyone has heard whether he'll be back or not?

Regardless, I don't envy him when he starts job hunting, and a prospective employer runs his name through the google.

Apologies if this was posted earlier. Some true old-school ball here ...

Huskies' website says score was 34-13, but it was 6-0 SJU.

Meh, they were definitely run dominant from 04-11. But they threw very effectively with Kirchoff. In the 90's they wanted to run well, but they had some talented wideouts too (e.g. Jeremy Belisle, Eric Carlson). I think it's more a phenomena of them coaching to the strengths of their players. They definitely want to run effectively and will always prioritize a strong ground game as long as Coach J is there. But it's not necessarily that they've only recently started emphasizing the passing game. With Wetzel and Aakre they had QB's that were incredibly physical and gifted runners. Each started for 3.5 years and played with two All-American RB's in Porta and Flannery and had excellent OLine play. Result: they called games that played to those strengths. If they'd had a Hallstrom, they'd have utilized him on those teams as well.

I actually think Peterson's an underrated runner, but with his passing ability, they've tailored the play calling to match his even better arm. Hallstrom won't be easy to replace (really, you don't replace a Hallstorm or a Mathis). Though I'm excited to see how Neuville and Bryce Marquardt do as Soph's. Both had really solid freshman campaigns, especially considering all the senior talent in the receiving corps. Marquardt had a great baseball season so hopefully that confidence translates onto the field. They also moved some other pieces around.

I think it'll take them some time to get it running to full speed. But with Peterson under center (this is why I'm most confident) and most of the Oline and backfield back, I think they'll be pretty lethal.

On the whole, I think the conference is going to be really strong again. The Cobbers should be good, Augsburg will be tough, SJU should keep improving and UST will be hungry to prove last year was a fluke. I'd put the top half of the league up against anyone.

Guys and gals,  just spent the night in the hospital for the first time in my life since I was born. They found a blood clot in the lower lobe of my right lung and lots more still in my legs. My words of wisdom from this ordeal are, "Be persistent in getting to the bottom of your malady with the doctor". Unfortunately for me, my primary doctor was on vacation when I first went in three weeks ago and I got someone that didn't really listen to my complaint of being short of breath and general malaise. So he ordered a round of antibiotics to cover the possibility that it might be bronchitis and ordered a heart stress test. My heart is in great shape, but still out of breath. See my primary on Monday because I'm not getting better fast enough, he orders a blood test which confirms a clot. Get a chest CT yesterday afternoon and spend the night in the hospital for observation to get my blood thinning medicine in line. Thankfully there was no necrosis of lung tissue, at least that could be seen in this CT.

Sorry to have to rain on the parade, but if you are not feeling well, don't rest until you get satisfactory answers from your health provider.  Get a second opinion if you have to. Life is too short as it is and you don't want to see it shortened unnecessarily.

Art - get well soon. If you need a second opinion sites like grand rounds and best doctors and the Cleveland clinic can do so for you without another trip to the hospital.  I work in healthcare and the availability of quality doctors is lower than anyone would like to believe - groups like these can give you some peace of mind without the hassle of taking another half day off of work to see a doc 45 mins away. 65% of the time they find a better treatment plan.

New look for Edor Nelson Field. New huge scoreboard with video display, north side scoreboard and sound system.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College will install a new video scoreboard at Edor Nelson Field this summer, with its unveiling slated for the field namesake's 100th birthday, college officials have announced.

The Nevco brand scoreboard, measuring roughly 20-feet-high by 40-feet-wide, will include a 13-foot-high, 22-foot-wide, high-definition video display. The scoreboard, which will replace the existing board on the south side of the field, will be adaptable to the five sports that are played on the field -- football, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and women's lacrosse.

In addition, a smaller scoreboard will be installed against the bleachers on the north end of the field, facing the south-side bench area, and a new sound system will be installed.

The scoreboard is slated to be installed by Aug. 18, which is the 100th birthday of Edor Nelson '38, for whom the field is named. An Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame honoree, Nelson was the longtime coach of Augsburg's baseball and football teams during a four-decade span.

Condolences to Retired Old Rat.

I remember when MSN.com had Mr. Garner deceased a couple years ago for an hour or two. Then they quickly took it down.

A "small world" moment on Friday: an expert from the US in a technique are using was visiting to train and lecture a number of staff. I caught up with him for a hello in the morning. He's from Colorado; I lived in Estes Park for a while so there was something to talk about. His youngest daughter had just graduated from a small Minnesota school I may have heard of, being Minnesotan. What's that?  CSB, he said. Both his girls went there. So then we talked collegeville/St Joes for a while. A small world.
