I have driven thousands and owned dozens  of cars in my life. Some I wish I had never sold - like my 68 Firebird, 66 Mustang, 69 Mustang, 67 Coronet, 72 Duster, et al. But I did scoop up a project car back in the 80s that sits in my garage awaiting some TLC. I'll bet that most of you can guess what it is by the attached promotional picture - even if maybe it was built before your parents were born.  :)

Editorial comment: All things man-made need attention - some more than others. While many chant the mantra that speed is equal to the amount of money you can spend, I have found that sound engineering beats money most every day. Ingenuity and creativity advance what can be done to push the limits of performance and longevity, but everything needs maintenance and electrical components burn out. Pick your poison in regards to the purchase of a vehicle. Really, there is no free lunch.

And if you're a fellow gear head: Now that we're empty nesters I can dedicate long hours in the garage without guilt. Plans are a Ford 9 inch independent rear suspension, 4 wheel discs, 351 Windsor topped off with a FAST throttle body and ECU, along with a top loader 4 speed out of a 68 Fairlane.  Yeah, it'll scoot and be innocuous. It's gonna take a few years to get it done as funds allow. There may be a tailgate or two in the future where some of you might get a chance to see it - who knows?

Do we have an over/under on the number of drunks sent to the hospital this weekend?

That being said, maybe Audis, Beamers, Porsches, etc. are all the same in this regard. I think our next vehicle will be a Toyota/Honda/Hyundai.

Having been involved with German cars for over 20 years this is a pretty true statement. But you need to understand these vehicle are not simply transportation. If you are expecting to simply change oil, put in gas & change tires, then you should not own a German vehicle. As a friend of mine likes to say, "nobody needs a Porsche, but they sure are fun."

Good to know. What do you think of this option: https://www.hyundaiusa.com/genesis/comparison.aspx
The Genesis is Hyundai's answer to "we don't just build throw away cars"- it's nice, but car snobs would never buy one. Hyundai has made tremendous styling & quality improvements over the last decade by stealing (everybody does it) talent away from other Asian as well as European manufactures.

I think the Genesis has attractive styling and the interiors are great, but what makes it a value is the warranty.  I've seen quite a few of these around DC lately: http://www.porsche.com/usa/models/macan/macan-turbo/

They look really nice, but might be a bit much considering it would be used as a family car.

I had a '61 Futura and loved it. It was the first car I bought new. Not a lot of bells and whistles but it looked, drove and rode great. Best of all, the girls liked it ;D

Three men are on death row in Oklahoma (where death by firing squad is still an alternative method of execution) and about to be executed. One's a Gustie, one's a Johnnie, and one's a Tommie.

Two guards brings the Gustie forward, and the executioner asks if he has any last requests. He says no, and the executioner shouts, "Ready.....Aim....." Suddenly the Gustie yells, "Earthquake!!" Everyone is startled and looks around, and the Gustie manages to escape into the wooded area surrounding the penitentiary.

The angry guards then bring the Johnnie forward, and the executioner asks if he has any last requests. He says no, and the executioner shouts, "Ready....Aim...." The Johnnie then shouts, "Tornado!" Yet again, everyone is startled and looks around, and the Johnnie escapes execution by running and jumping into Lake Eufaula just north of the penitentiary.

By this point, the Tommie had figured out what the others did. The guards bring him forward, and the executioner asks if he has any last requests. He also says no, and the executioner shouts, "Ready....Aim...." The Tommie shouts, "Fire!"

St. John's senior tight end J.T. Ford was named a semifinalist for the 2014 Campbell Trophy Thursday.
The award honors the top scholar-athlete in college football at all divisions. Ford was one of just two players from the MIAC and 167 nationally across all divisions to make the cut. Ford plans on attending medical school after graduation.

Bethel senior cornerback Josh Treimer was the other player from the MIAC to be named a semifinalist.

BDB, I'm watching the USA Hockey Prospects game. A kid from River Falls, Tommy Novak, got a nice PP goal. You know him? I think he plays with at least one of Eddie Olczyk's sons in the USHL in Cedar Rapds.

Son of BDB and I have not heard of this guy. If he's from River Falls I doubt he played High School hockey there.
I think he was originally a St. Paul kid whose family moved to River Falls.  Then as a sophomore he started crossing the river daily to play at the Academy.  He scored with 6.1 seconds left to beat Hermantown in the title game which enabled another classic Bruce Plante press conference.    You know he's salty when he introduces his players by zipcode.   https://twitter.com/paraloschicos15/status/439250149034848257

Correct on all fronts.  Salty as a description of Plante does a severe injustice to salty.  Plante is a poor sportsmen and a pathetic example of a high school hockey coach.  At the time of the those rants, I felt he should have been suspended from coaching for his rant.  Disclosure:  Parent of two STA and one Visitation graduates.

AO with some quality high school hockey info. Well done. +k

I was at that St.Thomas Academy-Hermantown championship game. Hermantown got totally jobbed by the refs at the end and had a good reason to complain.

Funny, I don't recall it that way at all, but I am sure that is what Plante told his team as well.

He was giving Denny Green a run for his money at times.

Five hours until first bounce in a rematch of the 2012 Grand Final. Swans are about 10 point favourites. I'm hoping for the Hawthorn / Johnnie double this weekend.

That depends on your definition of "a bit much"- there are a lot of people who have a Macan or the big brother Cayenne as a family SUV. The Macan is built on the same platform as the VW Tiguan & the Audi Q3. Note- same platform is far from being the same thing with different badging. All of these have unique characteristics. The long and the short of it would be, can you find a less expensive small SUV to do what the Porsche Macan does? Yes you can. But remember, nobody needs a Porsche, but they sure are fun.
