They definitely didn't have the speed on defense that we've been accustomed to seeing.

The lack of team speed on defense was the 2nd biggest surprise to me.  They did graduate a lot of really good, fast players last year.

Biggest surprise to me is the play of O'Connell.  Somethings not right with him.  Didn't resemble the quarterback I've seen the last couple of years.  Seems like a good kid, hope he can fix whatever it is that ails him.

Another pleasant surprise is the number of non-Minnesota kids that are contributing for the Johnnies.
Jeremy Piper, New Orleans, LA
Trevor Warner, Murietta, CA
Randy Perez, Murietta, CA
Antoine Taylor, Sherman Oaks, CA
Griffin Toomey, Anchorage, AK
You forgot Garrett Ackerman from Temecula CA, he had a interception and a fumble recovery on Saturday.
Are the Johnnies like the Gopher hockey team, realizing they need to reach outside the state to get players to win?
From what I learned listening to the talks at the Kick-Off Luncheon at the beginning of fall camp, the staff has over 3,000 players on their "watch list", 1,900 of which are high school Sr. now, the rest are underclassmen. Casting the net outside of Central MN is paying dividends and from visiting with parents of some of these kids from So. Cal. last year & this year several of these guys had offers from FBS schools. For a variety of reasons they are finding school & football behind the Pine Curtain appealing.

Dumo is a great ambassador for the school, the football program and the advantages of getting out of the city and living in the woods,if only for 4 years.

That's the impression I got from Trevor Warner's dad when I talked to him at the tailgate last year. The long locks and the California hometown didn't exactly scream "SJU" to me, but it takes all kinds to win.

Two schools of thought on that, I've seen coaches that want their players to look like basketball team from movie "Pleasantville." Short haircut, no tattoos, drink your milk, say your prayers, give your girl your college pin and lights out by 9pm. Other coaches could care less if you drank motor oil because you thought it made your run faster. Whatever works for you so long as you show up on game day.

I'll sign the petition.  Not sure SJU will be willing to come up with the travel $$'s.  Maybe two games in Collegeville.  Too bad we couldn't schedule for November.   ;D 8-)

I will be more surprised if the top 25 stabilizes/shows little movement as we head into the middle part of the season as I expect there to be a fair number of teams that are there to tumble. There are 4 MIAC and 3 WIAC teams there now - that ain't gonna stay that way as these teams start to play one another. The bottom half of the top 25 will see a lot of teams coming and going as the season wears on.

Here is some interesting match ups in coming weeks:
Oct. 11- AUG vs UST

Oct 18- SJU vs GAC
            CCM vs Aug

Oct. 25- UST vs BU

Nov. 1- BU vs GAC
            SJU vs AUG
            CCM vs UST

Nov. 8- BU vs SJU
            GAC vs CCM

Nov. 15- AUG vs BU
              GAC vs UST
There is going to be some serious shuffling in the MIAC. As of right now AUG, BU,GAC & UST look to have some tough schedules to close out their season's but a lot can happen with injuries etc…. Make no mistake, this will be fun to watch as each week of the season is peeled back like the layers of an onion. Some will tear up and other will be sobbing uncontrollably.  8-)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Agreed.  The Johnnie presence at high school games in the twin cities metro area has really picked up in the last couple of years.  Dumo is doing a great job searching for Johnnies outside central Minnesota.  Dividends seem to be paying off already.

It is a good read, although the author tends to over-exaggerate a bit on the "small-town" shtick.

QuoteWalking around campus, even between classes, feels like hiking in the woods. You're aware of other people, but most of the time the combination of wind and rustling leaves prevents you from actually hearing them.

Couldn't agree more - his GPS put him on a dirt road to the campus???  Really??  Time for a new GPS.  Collegeville is about as remote as college football gets?  I don't think so - it's 5 minutes away from the St. Cloud/Waite Park/St. Joe "metroplex" -  ;) - and only 45 minutes from the Twin Cities.

But I'd agree with his overall assessment of the "mood" of things.

It's probably the easiest MIAC campus to find.  From MSP, head west on I94 to exit 156.  You'll see the campus. ;D
