Then maybe we need to set some ground rules for non-football related topics. So far this is how I see it...

Acceptable:

Fishing
Australian Rules Football
Hamm's
SJU Golf
How horrible U$T is at everything not-football related

Don't kid yourself.  I fixed that for you.

Well the jerk store called and they RAN OUT OF YOU!

Sorry, was watching Seinfeld yesterday while drinking a Hamm's, wearing a Hawthorn Hawks t-shirt, in my Lund on Pelican Lake, while thinking of SJU Golf and how bad I am at fishing because I went to UST.

Ha!  Belly laugh!

I thought this was the football board?  It says Post Patterns, did the baseball and basketball boards get merged in here?

If you can't handle the topic, change it?

You'll get over it, tommie.  It will become easier and easier to accept as this streak continues.

Go Johnnies!

I guess we here in Tommieland will just have to be content with our back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to(soon to be) back Baseball titles and back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to (soon to be) back Basketball titles.

As if this place has ever been on topic. Maybe 50% of the time.  I miss TC's long posts on the Twins and their oft miserable performance.

Speaking of on topic: I was really encouraged by Martin's leadership on Saturday. Sura is a beast, yes, but it felt like Martin was bending the offence to his will. Pat's podcast (thanks for the tip, retegent) reinforced that feeling when he made a point of disregarding the CON loss because Martin was injured.  I think our QB may be the forceful general that we haven't had in a while.

Speaking of generals, I nostalgically remember Cam McCambridge from '03. He led that defence like a captain and stood tall at big moments.  That hit on the MUC receiver across the middle was a defining moment of the championship. It was an emphatic statement that there would be no more scoring, no comeback. Who's the man on the Johnnie D this year that fills that role?  It troubles me a little that I don't know a name.

On that note, as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we'll be in Chicago from October 30 - November 2 for the NZ v. USA rugby match at Soldier Field. We're staying down at the University Club of Chicago near Millennium Park. Link: http://www.ucco.com

A few UST friends are meeting me at the Club for drinks one of those nights. We're still sorting out the details. If any Chicagoland Tommies or Johnnies (or anyone else, for that matter) is up for joining us, let me know. The first beer is on me.

What's the difference?  You're their all-time best-seller!  :D

I was hoping you'd respond with that one! Nice
It actually physically hurts me to give a Tommie karma, but I suffered for you...made me laugh out loud! ;D

There were believers like you and Will Beardmore who thought the Tommies would cover the spread.

As rarely as you and I are on the same page, I have to give you +K for that one.  ;D

Ok, someone clue in the out of touch with pop culture among us.  I googled him and found a twitter feed that wasn't especially interesting.

I continue on my (mostly) one man quest of getting AO in positive karma territory.  Only 847 "applauds" to go.

I think it's too early to say this is the de facto conference title game. Or that a loss means Bethel is out. The winner would seem to have an inside track to the title, especially Concordia, since they'd already have a  win over SJU under their belts. But with 5 teams either in the Top 25 or unbeaten right now, it's really too early to say how this could go down. This could definitely be one of those years where a team with 1 conference losses wins the title. The Wartburg loss only hurts us if we're forced to compete for a Pool C bid. And 2 loss teams have snuck in before there.

This MIAC season is still really young. We'll learn a lot about the Cobbers and especially Bethel (this is their first real test since week 1) come Saturday.

I've taken some time since posting to mull over the possible scenarios for the MIAC - and it is early to pronounce the season's key game, but the reality as I see it is this: BU, Concordia and Gustavus are the only three undefeated teams right now in conference play. The Gusties have Carleton this week - so they'll most likely win. The other two teams with only one loss, St. Thomas and St. John's should win this week as well. After this game there will only be two undefeated teams in the MIAC - Gustavus and the winner at Bremmer Field. Whichever of the two teams wins, if they win out they will be the MIAC champ - no discussion there and they go into the post season.

Let's say Bethel loses (heaven forbid) and then runs the table - they'll be sitting and waiting for a pool C bid with two losses to ranked teams. It is too early to know if that's gonna hurt them - that is, having two losses because we don't know what the rest of the MIAC will do as they play each other, or what other teams do around the country to end out their seasons. No argument from me on that point.

Mixing up that scenario is what if after beating Bethel Concordia slips to St. Thomas or Gustavus and now there is a three or four way tie at the top of the MIAC. Yeah, that could happen, we'll have to wait to see if it does.

But if BU does win, and then runs the table, they're in the playoffs as conference champs. Then Gustavus or Concordia could be second in the MIAC with an identical record of 9-1. They would get a Pool C pick, almost for sure.

The wacky scenario is if Bethel wins out and the next 4 teams end up all having two losses because they beat up on one another. (I haven't worked out the math on that - maybe only two or three of them could do that) But if there are more than one two-loss teams in the MIAC and Bethel wins out with their one loss, the chances of an MIAC team getting a pool C bid might be a tall order.

It really is the bell weather game for how the conference shakes out down the road, early in the season as it is.

Couldn't agree more - his GPS put him on a dirt road to the campus???  Really??  Time for a new GPS.

It's probably the easiest MIAC campus to find.  From MSP, head west on I94 to exit 156.  You'll see the campus. ;D

Time for a history lesson kids. Listen up.

Way back in time, before freeways and GPSes and MIACs, the old Red River trail sliced its way from the mighty Mississippi in central Minnesota, across the prairies, to Fargo, North Dakota. Their carts, laden with fur pelts and grain to trade with the native North Dakotans* for oil, passed the old gateway to the St. John's Abbey/Monastery/University/Prep School multi-plex. This gateway was located at about the spot where the pedestrian walkway now crosses I-94. A turn to the south there would lead to the shores of Lake Sagatagan. Turn north and you would find a few houses between the trail and the railroad which had a small station there, known as "Collegeville". Rather than criticize this poor, defenseless technological wonder, perhaps credit should be given to the GPS for leading the weary traveler to Collegeville.
