Looking at school endowments tells you about the school's financial strength, but it actually tells you very little about the amount of scholarships/institutional funds that they offer students. This is because of what is called "tuition discounting".

Say you have a school named Open Plains University (OPU). OPU charges $30,000 a year in tuition. The actual cost for OPU to educate a student is say, $20,000. This means for every student paying the full price of tuition, OPU has $10,000 to offer to another student in the form of scholarships/institution grants and they can still break even for their costs. They could offer 5 other students $2000 each. They can use those funds to help low income students afford their institution, target high GPA students with merit based scholarships or offer scholarships to bring diversity (however they choose to define it) to their campus without spending one penny in endowment funding. There isn't any "real money" behind these offers, just tuition discounting. Now I have over simplified the concept for this example, but you get the general idea. Institutions put a lot of time and effort into running the numbers, if you will, and determining tipping points.

Thanks Bennie. So diversity could be a kid who may not be economically challenged but possibly the first in his family to attend college, as an example. Another example could be a kid who can play QB on the football team & shortstop on the baseball team while hitting for power from the left side of the plate  ;)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Nice!

Well, I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

fellas, the initialism you're looking for is UNW, not UNWSP.  If you want to visit the main website add the SP, for everything else, drop it.

Do we have any info about average financial aid package at BU compared to UST?  Endowments seem to be spent in many different ways.

Thanks for the heads up, AO.

I think I'll stick with UNWSP. I like how official sounding it is.

A further note from BC/BU history..........

In the Fall of 1957, the Bethel football team won their first championship. At the time, we were in the Badger-Gopher (Wisconsin-Minnesota) Conference.  The win-loss record was:
Bethel  6   Hibbing 19
Bethel 13   Northwestern, Wisc. 7*
Bethel 6   Mason City 7
Bethel 6   North Park 26
Bethel 19   Northland 6*
Bethel 33   Milton 6*
Bethel 8   Lakeland 7*
Bethel 19   Platteville Tech. 0*

As you can see, our three losses that year were to non-conference schools.  Our quarterback,  Ken  Baird had a look with the Vikings after graduation.
We did scrimmage both Augsburg and Hamline that year and, in my recollection, were undersized and outplayed.  Those were good years, though.  Often, our practices were right in the middle of the 8 acre campus, until sidewalks were poured criss-crossing the practice area.
An interesting note is that Dave Krieg, former quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks football team, (and other NFL teams) went to Milton College and played quarterback there in the late 1970's. Milton College closed its doors in 1982.
The picture attached is from across Snelling on the fairgrounds, our other practice field.
Hopefully another win for Bethel today against Hamline....starting in 5 minutes.

Interesting win for Bethel. We came in pretty banged up on offense. Several guys out, several guys playing hurt.

A lot of penalty yards that need to get cleaned up. Holds on the Oline aren't all that surprising though when you're playing with two guys out.

Duncan is a nice back. It'd be very interesting to see what he'd be like with a better Oline and more talent around him. There was a little back a forth last week about context when comparing Duncan's numbers to Sura's. And I'd agree, Sura definitely had the better ypc. But you've also got to recognize that Duncan goes into almost every game with the inferior Oline and facing a better defense than his counterpart at RB.

That said, the Hamline coaches did a good job of using quick counts, mixing up tempo and using Duncan in some misdirection plays. I think the coaching for the Pipers is definitely improving.

For Bethel, they spread the love. Elder Marquardt was banged up and they limited his touches accordingly. Good to see Klitske (134 ru yds) and Tusler step up. Peterson had a nice day, as did the younger Marquardt (108 yds rec). The lone pick was a jump ball in the end zone to end the 1st half.

And Bridgeport Tusler...WoW! He's definitely starting to find his groove. Had 18.3 yds/rec and 10.3 ypc today (124 yds rushing) and 3 TD's. Had a brilliant punt return that got called back as well. He's just lethal in the open field. I can definitely see why he was Mr Football/Gatorade POY/AP POY at Osseo. I first type 'he's gonna be really good,' but he's already really good.

Need to get healthy for the second half of the season now  :-\

I've been sitting in this Ebola virus frap at the Dallas airport now for three hours and I've got an hour to go.  I'm almost willing to cut off my left arm to break the boredom.  God help me, I hate weekend travel.

Good luck Oz, hope you can make it out...
Everyday is payday in paradise.

Nice Reusse piece on former Hamline coach Dick Mulkern. Mostly about the big Hamline win over SJU in 1964. Nice Gagliardi tale too.

Ahh, the classic "stuck in the airport" post. Nothing like public transportation to put one self in a good mood.

Hope you made it out Oz.

We used to have some classic "drunk" posts on here with regularity, but they seem to have tapered off.

Debate: If the 32 team field included the best 32 teams, would the Top 5 (Gusties, Johnnies, Royalies, Cobbies, Tommies) all make the field?

I think they would.

Not after they struggled with St. Olaf this weekend. But maybe they were overlooking the Ole's and looking to next week's game against St. John's. Obviously they are a much improved team, but they haven't played anyone real good yet and to put them in the top 25 is a bit premature IMO.

GAC wraps up their schedule with a tougher line up the final 5 weeks

Oct. 18 host SJU
Oct. 25 GAC has a bye.
Nov. 1 host Bethel
Nov. 8 travel to Concordia
Nov. 15 travel to UST

SJU has revenge on their mind after a 2 OT loss last year. GAC will need a bye week to focus on the month of November which will be very tough. GAC is much improved from just two years ago and they will need to win 2 of the remaining 4 games to prove they belong in the upper tier of the MIAC. Time will tell how they respond.

Guaranteed GAC doesn't lose on Oct. 25 ... the rest, I'm not so sure on  :)
