I'm not sure if anyone else saw this, but Daerek Wilson (6-0, 200, Fr., San Antonio, Texas/Reagan) made one hell of a play on a 4th quarter kickoff after an SJU field goal, almost knocking a Gustavus player unconscious. He pretty much blew up the Gustie kick return by himself.

He's a guy I'm going to be keeping my eye on.

Footage of the hit can be found at 2:32:50 of the Gustavus webcast.

Sura is 22 yards from breaking Matt Malmberg's regular season rushing record.

And he has 4 games to go. Carleton, Augsburg,Bethel & St. Olaf. The kid could realistically hit 1,600 yards if he stays healthy. The Bethel game will be a test but, I can't see the other 3 holding him under 175, so it could be more. The kid is a beast.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

The game of the week appears to be UST visiting Bethel. Does Bethel stay undefeated in MIAC action? Feel free to discuss. :D

The Johnnies have a case for all 3 MIAC Player of the Week Honors

Offense- Sam Sura 205 yards, 2 TD. I believe the first 1,000 yard rusher of the season in the MIAC

Defense- Andrew Norri 9 solo tackles, 2 Int. & 2 pass break-ups.

Special Teams- Trevor Warner returns a blocked PAT 97 yards and 2 points later to turn what would have been a tied game (with successful GAC PAT) to a 3 point SJU lead. This was a huge momentum swing.

I guess we will all learn what the committee says on Monday afternoon.
I wouldn't expect much from a committee who I doubt has ever let a single team sweep the weekly awards regardless of performance and gives 34 "first team" awards at the end of the season.

I think we'll see a Bethel win. UST aren't as strong this year as the last few.

The Top 25 is out.  Bethel remains unchanged at 11 and CON, SJU and UST all move up one spot.

Also, I went to the Gopher game on Saturday. Two things to note: 1) that's a great football stadium, and 2) I've never seen the Gophers win a clutch game before.  Although I can't believe that kicker hit that 52 yard FG to win. It was a very sweet kick. And he had Ben serving up some genuine meatballs on each kickoff.

I was there too and think I was the only person in the stadium that thought he could make that kick. He has a strong leg and some occasional accuracy issues but I thought he would focus on that one.

Reflections about the MIAC after watching the Bethel-Chicago game

While Bethel is solid, they have work to do if they want to be the MIAC Champs again this year. The defensive backs were toasted more than once and it's on film so the teams they still have to play will see that weakness, so if it is not addressed in practice it could cost them in a closer game. On the positive side, Bethel had no flags thrown against them this week and at one point Peterson was 10 for 10 in passing.

As mentioned earlier, Gustavus gets the bye this week to lick its wounds and to come out fired up to take on Bethel in two weeks.

Augsburg travels down to St. Olaf this week and Augsburg should prevail. With the Oles winning this past weekend and playing Gustavus close for a spell the week before, the Auggies will have to earn this win.

Hamline stuck with St. Thomas for the beginning of the game this past weekend and might be able to do the same thing against Concordia, but I don't expect them to prevail. This game might be more a measuring stick for comparing the Tommies and the Cobbers who will be playing each other the following week.

There will be a lot of red in Collegeville next weekend and I'm not talking just about the leaves still on the trees. Carleton comes in on the heels of a loss to St. Olaf and setting at the bottom of the conference. While the teams might look pretty in red and white, this won't be pretty game for the Knights. Sura's gonna roll into the record books if all goes as it should as the Johnnies win.

The game of the week is St. Thomas at Bethel and most folks following the conference had circled this game on their calendars at the beginning of the season. This will be a hard fought game between two evenly matched teams, and if there is an edge, it goes to Bethel by simply being a home game. If you can believe the 5 day forecast, it's supposed to be sunny and 68F with winds in the 8 mph range. Another picture perfect day to be playing football.

Play-off dreams:

With Gustavus losing this past weekend we now have 5 teams at the top of the MIAC with one loss. Bethel's loss is non-conference, so they are setting at the top of the heap. There seems to be a "pecking order" of sorts as Bethel has already beaten Concordia, Concordia has already beaten St. John's and now St. John's has beaten both St. Thomas and Gustavus. I don't for a moment presume that this will be the final order of things at the end of the year, but it is certainly telling of the parity at the top of the MIAC this year.

Bethel wins out – they go to playoffs as conference champs. They lose any one conference game and they are on the bubble – may get into the playoffs, but probably not – only if the other one loss teams knock each other down to two losses.

Concordia wins out – they go to the finals as a Pool C bid if Bethel wins out. If BU loses a game and they win out, they go to finals as conference champs. They lose another game and they may get into the playoffs, but probably not.

St. John's wins out – they go to the finals as conference champs. They lose another game and they may get into the playoffs, but probably not.

St. Thomas wins out – they go to the finals as conference champs. They lose another game and they may get into the playoffs, but probably not.

Gustavus wins out – they go to the finals as conference champs. They lose another game and they may get into the playoffs, but probably not.

All 5 teams that currently have one loss have their destiny in their own hands – keep winning and go into the playoffs. Lose and know that now you rely on what other teams in the conference do. How's it going to finish? We have to play the games and see how it shakes out.

The only reason I don't see Sura running roughshod over the Knights is that I can't see Fasching risking an injury to him if it gets ugly early.

U$T vs BU this Saturday....which team do SJU fans root for in this one?  I wish they both could lose  ;) but the closest thing to that is tie.  Which outcome is more beneficial to the Johnnies?

I would guess Johnnie fans would want UST to lose, then have UST beat Concordia the following week, finally St. John's could be champs out-right by beating Bethel.

If it gets ugly early, it'll most likely be due to Sura having ran roughshod over Carleton. They kinda go hand-in-hand.
