Interesting story. So how much of this do we think is going on at the DIII level?

None in the MIAC, except for... Well, let's just say I have it on good authority that a prime topic of debate in the shiny locker rooms of one institution is whether there are one or two 'n's in Snelling.

If the Tommie School of Law is any indicator, I'd say you're right, Oz.
I just read a national tournament moot court brief submitted by a team from UST. The writers spent one section of the brief advocating against the interests of their client.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

I'm guessing Adrian Peterson might have used a "learning specialist" back in his OU days.  :o

So this is what our world is coming to?  I can empathize with food allergies, but it's Halloween.  Sorry.  No teal pumpkin at our house.

Do we as a culture allow our children to be preyed upon in this manner?
I think the Ducks are probably the least of this kid's problems. I have a friend who's grandson verbally committed to the Ducks early (like this kid). Played his senior year in high school, but was injured near the end of the season. The Ducks still offered him a full scholarship. They red shirted him for his freshman year and paid for the surgery to repair his injury. During spring training he reinjured himself. They paid to have that fixed. He missed playing his sophomore year because of rehabbing the injury. During that spring the coaches and medical staff sat him down and told him that after evaluating him, they couldn't risk him re-injuring himself again because it could have long term consequences that would impact his quality of life later on. They told him that he could still use the facilities (workout/rehab and academic support). They still wanted him to be around the team and come to practice even thought he couldn't participate and they told him that they would continue his scholarship. This is for a kid that had never even played a down for the team. Not all schools would do that. I have heard of coaching staff pressuring injured athletes to quit so that they can use the scholarship for someone else. I was impressed with how they handled it and it showed that they do try to have the best interest of their players in mind.

That is impressive.  I'm pretty sure a lot of schools would have found a way to cancel the scholarship.

That is tempting but a 2600 mile RT wouldn't work. On top of that, John G. and I celebrate our birthdays the next day. I think John will be 90. I may have to celebrate with something local like Fat Tire or Avalanche :)

You don't have to "cancel" scholarships.  They can only give out 1 year scholarships.  You hear a lot about kids getting "forced out" when a coach tells a player that he should look at transferring as their won't be enough scholarships the next year, but I think most schools do find a way to honor scholarships for injured kids who want to stay at the same school.  Hopefully if Mr. Green isn't good enough to see the field, the coaches sit him down and encourage him to look elsewhere so he can get a chance to showcase his talents.

You guys and gals have a fun day up in Collegeville. I'll be watching to see if the Royals can match your Johnnies in putting the Tommies behind them and keeping their hopes alive for the conference championship. Maybe I'll see you all in a couple of weeks.
