My week is starting out just wonderfully.  My daughter gave me a cold, so I stopped to get a box of Kleenex on my way to work.  I came out to a dead battery in my car.  So, after jumping it, I now sit at work, trying to focus on my annual self-appraisal, which is due this afternoon.

Looks like somebody's got a case of the Mondays.  :-[

A tradition unrivaled...

I'm currently rereading the magnificent biography of Franklin Roosevelt by Carleton alum Conrad Black.  I'm currently on page 964, meaning only 170 pages to go (did I mention that it is a B-I-I-I-G book?)

Spoiler alert:  the New Deal greatly *extended* the Great Depression, but it took the buildup to WWII to cure it completely.  And, the Allies are winning the war.

Oh, and Hitler is NOT a nice person.  Neither is Stalin.  Neither is Hirohito.

OK, I warned you with the spoiler alert. ;)
fixed

Wrong.

By 1936, Roosevelt's policies had reduced unemployment by two-thirds.  He then foolishly acceded to the balanced budget crowd, and the ensuing 'Roosevelt recession' doubled unemployment.  He quickly switched back to Keynesian policies, and reduced unemployment to single digits before war mobilization reduced it essentially to zero.

They don't call it "the great depression" because of all the great things that FDR did to end it quickly.

In MIAC football terms if FDR became head coach at Hamline and recruited terrible players for 10 years and had a terrible record would you start praising him when he started winning after the rest of the conference went to war with each other and lost most of their production capabilities?

The top 25 is out and the MIAC has three in.  BU Moves up to 10, SJU up one spot to 18 and UST crawls in to 24th. That's a bit generous, I think, but judges are judges.

I did not see UST getting back in. I thought they'd be a few votes short. As it turns out, they made the cut by three points.

Like the rest of the conference, they'll beat Carleton handily, but I'm going to be checking the score of the GAC game regularly. That could be an interesting one. I'll have my vocal cords warmed up to sing the Gustie Rouser;D

So is anyone going to attend the tailgate party @ SJU on Saturday?
I'll probably be leaving right after that,as without a forward pass in the arsenal I see Bethel running roughshod over my beloved Johnnies.
I sure hope I'm wrong, but Bethel should be well rested as they won't have to devote any practice time to defending the pass. I suspect Coach Johnson will stack 9-10 in the box to shut down the one-dimensional SJU offense.

Well here's to hoping a miracle is performed on behalf of the Johnnies in Collegeville on Saturday.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Wish I could make it up. I'll be *hopefully* watching the live stream from KC again. The bummer about the live stream not working is it also means no Johnnie watch parties (unless I'm mistaken) to crash in my BU gear  ;D

And I'm not so sure how 'well rested' we'll be. We had numerous key contributors go down last week at GAC  >:(

This Saturday will be exactly 11 years from the "409 Game."
Strange things happen on these kind of anniversaries.

If this were basketball, I would recommend bringing out a MIAC Championship team from yesteryear. It always seems to work on the hardwood. ;)

Sorry, Pat, though I would have thought it was history, not politics.  I don't know how old AO is, but FDR died 3 years before I was born!

It offends the historian in me when someone would just parrot Herbert Hoover rather than checking readily available facts.  Historical unemployment records can be obtained in about 1 minute in the internet. :P

As a player in the 409 game, gotta say, I don't think this one matches up. SJU and BU are both very talented squads and playing for a conference crown. There's history and you know it'll be a big crowd on Saturday.

That said, the 409 game involved two unbeaten teams, both in the top 10. And then there's that whole reason why we call it the '409 Game.'

I realize none of this is lost on you. But I'm not sure there's anything that could happen on the field Saturday that could make this game top the 409. IMO, that's the best total game experience (history, hype, stuff on the line, play on the field, environment, result, etc.) I've encountered in D3. Other's might argue with that assessment, but I'll stick to my guns.  :)

When All Americans of Johnnie lore are writing emails to Coach J, congratulating him on the game, team and sportsmanship and gushing about how epic it all was, that says a lot.
