So with one week left in the season what's the biggest story in MIAC football this season?

-SJU's resurgence...on the cusp of Fasching's first MIAC championship and the playoffs in only his second year
-UST home for Thanksgiving once again...and only two seasons removed from a run that took them to Salem
-GAC's turnaround
-AUG's implosion
Good question. All valid answers. I feel you have them in the proper order.
You could also add Hamline returning The Hammer to St. Paul
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Retired Old Rat

UST missing the playoffs is not a story. Things are simply back to normal.

I would put GAC and HAM above UST. Accentuate the positive, etc.

Here's something to add to the list of notable stories:

Macalester is one win away from a Midwest Conference championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

I understand that this is a story best suited for another board, but it is interesting to think about the team that was the doormat of the MIAC for decades is now poised to have a playoff berth.

Wowzer, U$T beat up on Carleton 83-7.

Talk about letting out some frustration.

I wonder how long the starters played given that a huge, eye-catching thrashing of underpowered competition is about the only chance UST has for post season action...

Exactly what I was wondering...
Being on the road & having the diminished numbers that make up a travel squad may give the Tommies cover on this. I would be interested (not so interested that I would actually look at the box score) to see if after being up by 21 did the Toms throw the ball?

I took a look at the box. Hard to say anything too untoward. The backups did throw a few passes but I can live with that. It was 49-0 by halftime and it looks like backups played the entire second half (at least on offense).

Backup quarterbacks threw 13 times, completed 7, one of which was for a 37-yard touchdown.
I'm not thinking that's real out-of-line.

Another option is watching the archived video.

Missed all of yesterday's football action do to a wonderful trip the wife planned to St. Paul for my first Summit Brewery Tour. It was definitely fun, the beer was great, and enjoyed too much of the food truck. ;D 8-)

I did see a little of the game with the link above, and my thoughts are, I've never been someone that likes to see a team get beaten this badly.  However, i'm also not a fan of seeing teams that are clearly outmatched continue to throw the ball attempting to score on another teams second and third string with their first team still in that late in the game. Why not just put your second string in also and see who would have the better JV squad?

Also, I think i forgot to mention - Congrats to the Johnnies on winning the MIAC. You clearly have the best squad this year.

Now to playoff's, Should the NCAA committee be hoping for a UST win this Saturday? Think of how competitive they (NCAA) could make the playoffs this year with all flights payed for.  Just match UST vs. SJ1 - 16,500 fans, x $7.00/person attending = $115,500 to the NCAA for money to spend on a D3 football playoff?

There you have it - Problem solved!  8-)

[This should go without saying, but obviously this is a what-if scenario. I in no way guarantee at UST win this Saturday against the Gusties, or an SJ1 win over STO, or a Bethel loss to AUG, or even the NCAA Committee overlooking CON.  I do not have classified information as to what the NCAA is hoping for.  These views are desperate hopes for a team that I would like to see play more than 10 games this year.]

Go Tommies!
No chance Tommies jump Bethel.  You can't lose to SJU and Bethel and jump them into the playoffs.

WOW - (i'll help you out) In a What-If Scenario, although unlikely, they could certainly jump Bethel for playoff contention! It was already given in my disclaimer.... but it is now Bold and Underlined for you ::)

Also probably for another board but:
How about Kurt Ramler, former associate head coach of the Johnnies, taking the Saints to a perfect 10-0 in the UMAC and playoffs in his first year as head coach    ???

How big a difference do you think Mathis would have made against SJU?  I'm a little surprised none of you Bethel guys mentioned that.

Minor difference perhaps.  As royalsfan mentioned, the turnovers were what really cost them.

Landon is a good player, and I'm sure he would've made a few plays, but with no disrespect to the lad, he is not on the same level as his older brother Seth, who was one of the best to ever play the position at BU.

Obviously a team game, but the offense let them down yesterday, not the defense.

They did finish 9-0 in the UMAC last year, As they did again this year.  Not sure how many returning starters the team had back?  I am interested in seeing how improved they are under his coaching during playoff games.  Maybe in the near future those games will be very competitive. I at least hope so.

Completely unrelated to his coaching or team.  But I remember going to school there before they had a program and thinking if CSS had a football team with a competent coach that CSS would be a wonderful place to go and play football.  Great school in a very nice city. Perfect location on top of the hill as far as views of Duluth and the Harbor, and just far enough away from the cities to still be comfortably away from home, but close enough for family to enjoy the games. That year i was there they were also building a athletic complex that I remember being very comparable to some MIAC schools facilities.

I definitely think Rambler is at a place he can win a lot of games in the UMAC.

Boy, am I looking forward to this weekend's game. For the first time in many years SJU is talking about post season play from a position of strength. And this weekend's game is the opportunity to put an exclamation point on that claim.  I sure hope the guys are focused and ready to walk out there and claim their prize.
