Pat,

Wondering why you guys are surprised that UWP is ahead of Bethel in the regional rankings, when you also have them ahead of Bethel in the top 25 poll?

Just wondering...

Because they are two separate rankings with two separate sets of criteria. And honestly, I don't agree with the collective will of the Top 25 voters either. :)

Sam Sura is set to break the SJU single season rushing record as long as he gains 7 yards against St. Olaf.
He will also break the MIAC single season rushing record, currently held by UST's Gary Trettel (1,527 in 1990), should he gain more than 58 yards.

No, I don't think that's right. Trettel's number is MIAC games only (or the record book is wrong, I know both Flannery and Porta went for more yards overall in a season).

Sura's MIAC only rushing yds: 1020
Sura's full season rushing yds: 1469

From the MIAC Recordbook page:

RUSHING YARDS:
Game:        314   Peter Ridley, UST (vs. Carleton)   10/23/04
Season:   1,527   Gary Trettel, UST   1990
Career:    4,400   Phil Porta, BU   2003-06
Overall
Career:    5,303   Logan Flannery, BU   2007-10

So if Sura gets 508 rushing yds, he'll own the MIAC record. Which may actually be possible against Olaf  ;) :o

Nothing wrong with 169 yard/game average. TommieSports.com doesn't have the greatest program archive but I was able to find the 1990 team was the last MIAC champions until Flash In The Pan Glenn arrived. Anyone know the details of that team? They were 7-2 in conference play and tied with Concordia for the championship. Did they qualify for the playoffs under whatever the format was that year?

MIACathletics.com has a pretty good standings, stats and awards archive through the late 70s. http://www.miacathletics.com/sports/fball/archives SJU finished that 1990 season 6-3 in conference play but led the conference in scoring offense (35.2 a game) and defense (15.4). Their three losses were 14-25 to UST, 0-21 (not a misprint) to Hamline and 28-30 to Concordia to end the season and I assume lose the conference title. 1990 SJU results: http://www.gojohnnies.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=110&path=football

I've been wrong before, but that was well before the AQ system, and I believe just 16 teams made the dance, so you really had to wow the committee to get a playoff bid.

We hosted UST that game.  Trettel was a beast in the first half, damn hard to tackle.  If I remember correctly we were down 21-0 at half.  Came roaring back in the second half.  Kicker missed the extra point to tie it up at the end of the game.  I think Trettel got hurt the next game.

Congratulations to Pat on 17 years of d3sports.  You've certainly made it easier to follow d3 across the country.  And added a lot of fun.  I've met many people through the boards that I now consider friends.
It would be 3 more on that list  if not for those pesky restraining orders...... ;)

105, I think you've confused me with TDT.  Since both of us are Anoka Tornadoes I can I can partially understand the confusion.

No one has filed a restraining order against me in at least 10 years.   ::)
You are correct sir, but when you've met one Anoka Tornado, you've met them all.... kinda like Iowegians  ;D

Does that include Garrison Keillor of Anoka and SJU fame?  O boy, am I dating myself with those memories.  ;) ;D ::)

Over in the Pool C Board there has been some great permutations and what-ifs being shared.

But my next questions are more directed towards scheduling that is done by teams and the MIAC. I'm asking because I am ignorant concerning the process, and I can only learn by asking questions.

So jumping in:
1. Does the MIAC determine as a conference who plays what week in the season? Or do the teams make "deals" to play at some point in the season?
2. Does the MIAC "work around" non-conference commitments?

I'm asking these questions and this line of questioning because it appears to me that on a year to year basis, the MIAC could set up (using the previous year's finishing order) a conference schedule that would pit the better teams to play one another in the final weeks of play. It appears that other conferences around the nation are doing that to the benefit of those teams so they can get ranked and stay ranked regionally until the very last week.

And, can the MIAC be more proactive in getting non-conference games scheduled with "better than average" teams from other D3 conferences in our midst? There are no teams in the MIAC that cannot schedule a "home and away" series with two other D3 teams. I see no advantage in playing any NAIA teams.

Is there a person or committee at the MIAC HQ that does the scheduling?

It seems that the current formula is that the MIAC leaves the first two weeks of the schedule open for non-conference games and then schedules a bye for each of the nine teams over the last nine weeks of the season so there are always four MIAC games each week.

Lastly, almost regardless of the previous years' records, the two Catholic schools (trying not to name one in front of the other  ;D ) should play on one of the last two weeks of the season.

Thoughts and insight appreciated.

The conference does all the scheduling of conference games, and yes, it shows no favoritism to the Tommie-Johnnie game.  ???
