Checked up on my hometown Bulldogs, knowing they had a playoff game last week...

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/content/college-football-bulldogs-top-northwest-missouri-state-malosky-stadium-miracle

I was shocked at how low the attendance was...1,017.

UMD has won multiple national titles recently, just finished an undefeated regular season, and was playing last year's champs, and barely 1000 people show up?  I know Duluth is a hockey town, but man, I'd have thought you'd get over 1000 students alone there, let alone townies...

Hey all. Longtime follower, but haven't posted in a few years. Another Cobber fan for the board. Anyways, reading that article sounds like the ending was pretty similar to the infamous Cobber, Royal game from a couple years ago. Interesting that this game the refs chose not to throw a flag.......

Yes, I agree. If UMD really had players come onto the field then they should have thrown the flag. It more than likely was a judgement call that the players coming onto the field didn't interfere with the play. If I remember correctly, in the BU game the fumble happened close to the Cobber bench and the players coming off the sideline were close to the ball and could be considered as affecting the play (by interfering with the players on the field attempting to recover the ball). Maybe in the UMD game the sideline players weren't close to the action so they refs decided not to throw the flag. Without seeing the video I have no idea, just venturing a guess why they didn't throw a flag, but regardless a penalty was committed according to the rules and a flag should have been thrown.

Here's a link to the video...go to 2:53:00 mark or so...how was NW Missouri able to get a play off w/ .9 seconds to play?  Throw in an intentional kick of the ball by an offensive player...the last play was a circus.

From what I remember, the 2002 installation at Clemens Stadium was somewhere in the $175,000 to $225,000 range. But, that was over a decade ago.

I believe the initial install in 2002 was in the neighborhood of $750K.  That included the excavation, installation of the base and drainage, and the turf.  Subsequent replacements are cheaper because the under-workings are already in place.  Maybe Redtooth can chime in--he was a big part of that project.

Ask and you shall receive....been lurking on the board all year without a post.  I am thrilled at the great season the Johnnies have had and could not be happier for Jim G.  I think they are playing fabulous football in all three phases and I hope it continues in Iowa....although they won't have the pleasure of Thanksgiving at an Old County Buffet in Tacoma like Duff and I shared in 2000.

In terms of the turf, Duff was very accurate on pricing and design.  The initial installation in 2002 was $675,000 with all work done including inlaid lines and logos.  The gift we received to pay for the turf came from Bill Clemens and included a few extra dollars.  The Board and monastery did not want us to use a capital campaign strategy like the one someone mentioned where all players give a little....we were coming off a few campaigns and there was a fear of donor fatigue.  John and I were authorized to make the approach to Bill and he agreed immediately to help.  We then had a convince a number of internal folks (Business Office, Design Committee and monastery) that this was a good decision.  It helped that our grass field had been trashed during the playoff game against UWSP (game played in 3" of rain) followed by 15" or snow that forced us to play the West Region championship against PLU in the FargoDome.

Lots of good financial, safety and environmental reasons to do so.....I still have the white paper I did to research it.  Fast forward; SprinTurf is now owned by a Johnnie in the investment world.

Great stuff, highly recommend it for teams that play late with the playoffs.....people thought I was crazy and now nearly every team has it someplace; game field or practice fields.

I KNOW you're crazy!
The last shall be first and the  shall be... FIRST AGAIN!!!

Massey predicts a relatively low scoring affair and Wartburg victory, 24 -17. Let's hope his computer brain is wrong, lacking any humanity or understanding of Johnnie Magic (tm).

MIAC awards are out:

Talk about burying the lede, Bobby!  Sura was named MVP and Fasching was named CotY. A well deserved result. And a bagful of Johnnies were name first team All-MIAC, including half of the O-line. A fitting result for an impressive season.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!  Johnnies upset SCSU in men's basketball!!!

Is that better Oz?  I know many don't pay attention to hoops on this board, but this is a fun game.  You can't spell sucks without SCSU.

Another commentary on the all-MIAC selections:  Three 1st team QBs???  Shouldn't they select 15 o-linemen, then?  ::)

In addition to all the Johnnies, congrats to Stam award winner Chris DeVet from Augsburg.  Chris interned on my team this past summer.  He's a bright, ambitious kid and a helluva d-lineman (and he didn't look too bad running the ball on a fake punt, either  ;) ).

Thanks Bench.

Are you implying that some teams have announcers who are homers?  ;)  I can think of two, both with "Saint" in their names.

We pay good money for that not-so-subtle promotion.

What? Mark Lewandowski a homer? Though, Bryan Backes does a nice job of moderating Mark and Mark openly admits it. Hey, hats off to all the radio announcers out there. I enjoyed watching and listening to the Johnnie away games and found the announcing to be quite good!

Christmas decorations have been out in the suburbs around Melbourne for a week or so and I just realised that this is what these are. I thought all the trees in North Brighton were diseased until I figured out what was going on this morning.

EDIT: And happy Thanksgiving all. We're having friends and their families over on Saturday for Turkey Day celebrations.
