Rumors that Caruso is heading to UW-Whitewater.  Developing . . .

Here we go again...
I thought it was Nebraska...

After victories the past two years over the Toms, I'm much less inclined to jump on the "find St. Glenn a shiny new job" bandwagon.

I wonder when the "find Gary Fasching a new job" train will leave the station at Cretin & Summit...
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

You roll your eyes, but the rumor is right there in the WIAC forum.

So my eyes are tired this time of night...where's the part about Caruso in that thread?

The X Factor is absolutely Nick Martin on Saturday.  He has played his best in the biggest games of the year (Bethel & UST).  I thought he was horrendous against CSS.  There were numerous times where he held the ball too long in the pocket, failed to feel the pressure from his backside, and nearly was crushed/fumbled.  He held the ball way too long and several times took significant losses instead of throwing the ball away.  In addition, Martin missed several wide open receivers because he is too slow in his read progressions.  Sundly should've scored twice on identical plays to the flat off play action if Martin had seen him wide open.

I thought the offense as a whole looked confused & out of sorts against CSS.  I noticed they again had issues getting the right personnel/play call in from the sidelines which resulted in wasted timeouts at the line of scrimmage.  Anyone look what the SJU conversion rate to points was on those 8 CSS INTs?   It sure didn't feel adequate.

It won't fly against a much better opponent in Waverly this weekend.

I think this post from earlier in the week came to fruition.  I feel like the loss of Sura had little/no effect on the outcome yesterday.  Bungum was good enough.  More confusion on play calls/personnel led to wasted timeouts.  Really unacceptable in the 12th game of the season.

Nick Martin was not near good enough.  The number of 3 and outs in the first half along with off target throws to open receivers won't cut it in the playoffs.  Hope he gets pushed in August and/or early next season.  QB play was the number 1 issue in 2014.

While I agree with your assessment that inconsistent QB play was an issue all year and was exposed on Saturday, the loss of Sura (although impossible to prove) I think had more than little/no effect. Bungum played an outstanding, gutty game. He was easily the SJU MVP on offense. It is really remarkable that he filled in at RB as well as he did. However, not having Sura caused several key issues in personnel groupings, formations and in the inside run game. Some of the confusion down in the red zone and at other key times was caused by trying to sort out who was lining up where since you had your usual WR (Bungum) now at RB. On one particular play in the red zone, Bungum lined up wide, the rest of the offense (including Martin and FB Sundly) ran the sprint option to the right. The play was executed well except for when Martin turned to pitch the ball, there was no RB to pitch to. Net result was a 2 yard loss. As far as the inside run game, we all have seen how hard Sam Sura is to tackle. SJU got a little bit of stuff going with Bungum inside going for 2-5 yards at a crack. Watching it back, on a number of occasions it was one guy (usually a DB) flying into the hole to make the tackle, with everyone else blocked effectively. Please understand that I am not criticizing Bungum,  but he is a totally different type of playmaker than Sura. My point is that maybe once or twice during the game, Sura breaks that tackle and has nothing but green in front of him. Does SJU win with a healthy Sura? I won't go that far, but I think it is fair to consider the converse - does Wartburg win without Logan Schrader?

I'm more than a little disappointed in the outcome Saturday (I think they had a chance at a deeper run with the way the D was playing), but very proud of the 2014 Johnnies. Great job and already looking forward to next year!

As for Wartburg - good luck at UWW, you are a darn good football team and I think have a chance against anybody.
