The 2011 SJU v AUG had an announced crowd of 12,000+ in September. The Miracle in Collegeville game. I was there and it was a glorious afternoon.  8-) SUCKED!

There, I fixed it for your OldAuggie  ;)
A couple of things about that game. The CB who got beat twice, never saw the field again. The next week a WR was converted into a pretty damn good CB. Most important...when you get beat long with the game on the line-just interfere & take the stupid penalty instead of a big gainer downfield.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Nice work, art, but I don't agree with the system even though I am sympathetic to the intent.  I think the longer-than-one season consequence of this approach would be to keep the strong strong and the weak weak.

My question is: How's a bottom team ever going to climb up?  Their season would be over by the fifth round every year as they are slaughtered by the powerhouses. There is no chance to recruit in that environment, either players or coaches.

So, as much as I would like to see SJU get a system that supports their post season position, I think trying to gear that outcome would be bad overall for MIAC football.  You have to be the best to be the winner however they are scheduled.  The current approach manages to offer a glimmer of opportunity to the cellar dwellers while we've done alright in the post season despite the system.  It's hard for me to believe I'm saying this, but I prefer the current system.

Oz, at first blush your position might hold water, but upon further review I discovered this:

Next year's schedule my way:

Number 9 plays 2, 1, 7, 8, 3, 4, 5, 6, B in that order.
Number 8 plays 5, 4, 1, 9, 2, 3, 6, B, 7 in that order.
Number 7 plays 3, 6, 9, 1, 4, 2, B, 5, 8 in that order.
Number 6 plays 4, 7, 2, 3, 1, B, 8, 9, 5 in that order.
Number 5 plays 8, 3, 4, 2, B, 1, 9, 7, 6 in that order.
Number 4 plays 6, 8, 5, B, 7, 9, 1, 2, 3 in that order.
Number 3 plays 7, 5, B, 6, 9, 8, 2, 1, 4 in that order.
Number 2 plays 9, B, 6, 5, 8, 7, 3, 4, 1 in that order.
Number 1 plays B, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 in that order.

What the MIAC has planned for the coming year:

Number 9 plays 2, 4, 3, 5, 8, 6, 7, B, 1 in that order.
Number 8 plays 6, 2, 5, 4, 9, 1, B, 3, 7 in that order.
Number 7 plays 5, B, 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 6, 8 in that order.
Number 6 plays 8, 5, B, 3, 4, 9, 1, 7, 2 in that order.
Number 5 plays 7, 6, 8, 9, 1, B, 2, 4, 3 in that order.
Number 4 plays 1, 9, 2, 8, 6, 7, 3, 5, B in that order.
Number 3 plays B, 1, 9, 5, 6, 2, 4, 7, 5 in that order.
Number 2 plays 9, 8, 4, 7, B, 3, 5, 1, 6 in that order.
Number 1 plays 4, 3, 7, B, 5, 8, 6, 2, 9 in that order.

If I was associated with a team that was closer to the bottom of the league what I propose is "fairer" as far as equalizing the two halves of the season. In my scenario the number nine teams gets 18 points in each half of the season by simply adding up the placement numbers – for example (2 + 1 + 7 + 8 = 18 and 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 18). The number 8 team has 19 and 18. The number 7 team has 19 and 19.

In the MIAC schedule posted (thanx Sagatagsam) for next year team number 9 has 14 for the first half of the year and 22 for the last half of the year – definitely a tougher first half of the year. Team number 8 has 17 and 20, which is more equitable, but still a tough first half of the season. Team 7 has 11 and 27 – way lopsided.

As you move up in ranking in my version it does get tougher for the number one team to maintain its position at the top of the heap. What I really like about my version is that the top four teams are forced to see each other in the final three weeks of the season. For reasons already stated I don't hold much hope for this schedule to be adopted, even though it is more fair to the bottom teams, as the conference has too many other things at stake in the rivalry games to have the better teams not meet until the end of the season.

This is by design. How else would crowds of 12K-15K be accomplished if not for beautiful autumn afternoon where uninterested Tommie fans can come out to a social event. There is no way the crowds would come out in November during inclement weather. Hummmm, that may be a way to keep the opportunistic politicians from making a stop at the game...schedule it after an election.

I'm not saying that Johnnie-Tommie has to be the last game of the season a-la Michigan-Ohio State, The Iron Bowl, Florida-Florida State, etc. I'm just saying it should be nestled a little later in the season. I would be perfectly OK with it being a tradition to have Johnnie-Tommie the second weekend of October (much like the Red River Shootout between Oklahoma and Texas.)

And I've changed my mind. I do think your idea is an improvement, art.

My request for 2015:
Somebody, please, I beg you, beat Whitewater and Mount Union and stop them from meeting in the Stagg Bowl for the tenth time in eleven years.

Beating Whitewater can be Gary Fasching & Company's goal, but somebody, for the love of all that is sacred, has got to step up in the east...

Terrorism strikes Oz...

The cafe where the terrorists have holed up with a bunch of hostages is about three blocks from my Sydney office.  We unfortunately have supplied quite a few people to ISIS and some have come back. No one knows who these guys are, returned jihadis or some local eager beavers, but we'll find out soon enough I fear.

Good morning Oz. Sounds like they took the dude out about 2:30am your time. I wonder why he picked a coffee/chocolate shop?

We're trying!

But as you've may have noticed, KC Keeler is at Sam Houston State, and no one else can seem to "convince" D1 talent to drop down... ::)

I just woke up. I'm not surprised. It looks like two hostages were killed as well. I wonder how that happened.

I've heard the argument that Mount Union gets D1 talent to play for them, but I've never bothered to research it.

How many guys on their roster are D1 transfers?

Very few, if any.....this argument is based on anecdotal transfers from over ten years ago...one transfer of note was Larry Kinnard.  Originally went to Ohio State, from Alliance....one of his parents got very sick and he transferred home to Mount Union, hardly the act of an evil empire attempting to procure some unfair advantage.

Pat Coleman

Larry Kinnard wasn't even a transfer -- this happened before his freshman year.

That's what I thought. If more than 2-3 guys on the team were FBS/FCS transfers, there would be a story about it published somewhere--most likely in the hometown newspaper of Mount Union's primary rival(s).

I did a little bit of searching and I find no such story online.
