Play wasn't cancelled. I'm at dinner at the MCG before the game. It's a tough life but someone has to live it.

EDIT: What a game. A four quarter brawl. Hawthorn have won five in a row now and sit clear in fourth position.

Nice tribute by the Hawks and Magpies after the match. Good job by the coaches and captains to get it organized.

I've been following the masseyratings.com to help me with my AFL betting (no good so far, but I only bet $1 a week so I'm not putting the college fund at risk.  Yet...).  I just switched over to DIII football to see where he puts the Johnnies in the pre-season and I see it will be blood sport in the MIAC, as if we didn't know that already.

Ignoring the NESCAC which screw up the ratings, he has the MIAC as tough and tight:

SJU       #9
UST       #10
BU         #11
CON      #12

According to Kevin Massey, it's anyone's game in the MIAC this year.  Should be another exciting season of MIAC football.

Absolutely...Gustavus was competitive last year as well....and if Augsburg can find some defense, they could be dangerous as well...

I'm on the Gustavus dark horse contender wagon all the way.

It will be interesting to see if they can manage to get over the SJU - BU - UST hump....They were winning at halftime vs BU and SJU, and it was close with UST...likely had lost some of the wind from their sails after losing to SJU, BU, and CORD in the prior weeks.

vs SJU - Lead at halftime 13-7             29-19 Loss

vs BU - Lead at halftime 13-7              30 - 23 Loss

vs UST - Trail 21-14                           57 - 35 Loss
This is all about depth IMHO.

The question of what brings a 26-year-old to murder his father at 2am has been answered. Meth. Nasty stuff that.

I say they beat UST, lose to SJU (and Carleton of course), and then Bethel is essentially a coin flip

Was going to post this last week. Austin Murphy with a really nice story about his nephew, Hank Goff, a former Marine now playing for Concordia-St. Paul. Hank's a great player it sounds like, but story also delves into all the friends he's lost over the years, especially to suicide. Fans of the Sweet Season will recognize some characters from the book, including Austin's dad. My only question is: How did Hank not end up at SJU? Austin should have recruited better.

Might also be reflective of halftime adjustments.  The Gusties quick passing game is something the MIAC teams don't see regularly and may take a half for players and coaches to adjust to.  Not sure about the receivers, but I believe Hendricks is back for another year and with their ability to quickly put points on the board they should never be out of a game.

I think it's their total lack of a rushing attack. They didn't have a single player in the top 20 of the MIAC in yds/g last year. And their leading rusher was Hendricks at 21.2 yds/g. It's tough to hold onto a lead when you can't bleed any clock in the second half.

That, and when teams like BU, SJU and UST are running at your D all game, you're going to start to break more in the 2nd half.

The flip side is, they're obviously well built to stage a comeback in almost any game as well.

Big croc. I want to see the one that chewed of this one's right front leg.

Here's a name to keep an eye out for: Tom Fields.  If it turns out he doesn't have the cardio to make a senior AFL side (he's currently in the semi-pro minor leagues) I think we'll see him in the States trying to make the NFL.  Last week he kicked an 80 meter (87 yards) punt on a kick in.  He backed it up this week with two more, one that was about 75 meters and another measured at 88 meters (96 yards).  In the air.

Admittedly, he's kicking off three steps, not one, but he has some pretty sweet timing none the less.

DESTRUCTION!!!!

Hawthorn, fourth position, destroyed Fremantle, first position, this afternoon. 115-43. It was a four quarter demolition job and the Hawks best game of the year, near flawless.  The Hawks continue with their stroll through the top of the standings playing third place Sydney next week, fifth place Richmond two weeks later and second place West Coast after that. If they keep playing like this out Hawks will be second in the standings and looking at home field advantage through the post season.

It's starting to get to the money end of the year. We'll see how it goes.
