Anybody know how accurate the player participation lists are on the stats pages?
If they are accurate I'm a bit surprised that U$T only played 39 guys in a 51-7 romp.
Pat might have a better feel for this, but a couple things I've seemed to notice are, 1) special teams substitutions don't always make the lists, as teams rotate in lower kick-off/receiving teams they usually aren't noted, and 2) offensive/defensive substitutions seem to depend on the situation of the substitution.  If there is a long drive the names usually get noted, but if it's a three-and-out or if the player is just in for a couple plays they might not catch those.

I was wondering the same thing as you were though, I was looking for a few names (kids I know) that got in the first game but apparently not this second game.

Pretty standard that player participation is not accurate, played in a lot of blowouts and was rarely listed. Kind of a bummer, especially if I got to play multiple series. I also felt like the PA announcer should have made an announcement since my mom probably wasn't paying much attention at that point.

But if I felt like the game was well in hand and I hadn't played yet, I was the master of this move:

Me: "Hey coach says I'm in on punt."
Other dude: "Oh...ok."

No one ever noticed. I did it like 20 times in my career. Thankfully nothing ever went amiss.

On the SJU stats I counted 54 guys on the player participation report however I've got to believe that a few more than that got in.  Maybe you actually need to make tackle or carry the ball to get listed?

I'm pretty new to PA for football, but I've never heard anyone announce subs other than a new QB.  Maybe it was better that you weren't announced so the coaches didn't find out you were sneaking on.  Don't think I could've gotten away with that in hoops.

I've been yelled at by coaches before, water off a duck's back. I'm 33 years old and still seeking validation from my parents. So...WORTH IT!

But I was speaking more in terms of the times where I legitimately got to play. Also, I was joking.

As a freshman in HS playing mop up minutes in the varsity game when it was out of hand, I made sure to get in on tackles, even though the play was 95% over, just to make sure the PA noticed and included me in the tackle list and my parents would realize I was on the field....no shame.

This totally depends on the school and it's handled differently at some places, but this is the best in class process in Division III:

The published starters are put into the stat program before the game and are all credited as playing. Anyone who touches the ball or makes a tackle is also credited as playing by the software.

Now there is generally also a person or two in charge of tracking participation. They have a roster (or one for each team) and are responsible for crossing off everyone they see in the game. In most press boxes you hear the SID or the stat-caller remind people on special teams plays to track for participation. But how diligent are they with linemen or receivers who rotate in and don't generate stats? Great question.

Sometimes the visiting team's SID, if they travel, is asked to track his/her own team's participation. But yes, tracking of participation at the D-III level is pretty spotty.

Should be a good one in Moorhead on Saturday. Cobbs have been pretty stout against the run, albeit against much less than they will see on Saturday. They did hold Sura to under 100 yards in last  years meeting. Grove is looking the part at QB and the skill position guys are looking the part for the Cobbers. Looking forward to another nailbiter at the Jake!

I was a double number as a Sophomore at UST and just so happened to share that number with one of our best players, a safety named Paul Sommerstad. Once I downed a football on a punt and the PA guy said "Sommerstad downs the football." I knew right then and there that I was a truly special player. The next year I said to our equipment guy, "I don't care what number you give me, just make sure if another guy has it he's not higher on the depth chart than me." They gave me number 6. There was no one else on the team with number 6.

<<Anybody on this board go to the St. Thomas - UWL game?  Looking for a first-hand account of how the Eagles looked.  Box score wasn't pretty but hoping there is a silver lining somewhere.>>

We were there Saturday.  Offensively, UWL just couldn't get anything going and were often in 3rd and long.  UST would be very aggressive on defense in these situations and there had to be 5-6 sacks as a result.  #20 for UST is super quick into the offensive backfield and pretty much sacked the QB whenever he wanted to.  Their one TD was a great burst by the RB right up the middle, which shocked everybody because he ran untouched for like 35 yards.  Tough to sustain drives when you can't consistently get first downs.

On defense, UWL actually did a decent job against UST in spots.  UST had to work pretty hard for most of their points and I thought UST's receivers were generally well covered by UWL.  Through two games, I've noticed that UST's receiving group is struggling to get separation from the DB's at times.  UWL DB's played a lot of press coverage with two safeties high.  Gould completed just 58% of his passes and on several incompletions he was flushed and had to throw it away.  They held Dowdle in check for most of the game as well, which will probably be a blue print for other teams going forward.

In the end, the score pretty much reflected the game I saw.  UWL was just overmatched across the board.

Gotta be tough to be a Johnnie fan this year, what with going into October 2-2 and all.

That's a good take on your Bethel squad. I think the Augsburg vs. Bethel game will be a big one for both teams this year. Looking forward to it. As far as the AUG vs CUW game; there is not much to say because the game was never in doubt. I am not going to pound my chest on here after an expected win vs. an overmatched opponent.

Bring on Carleton!!

Yeah, BU played CUW a couple of years in a row for non-conference as well...hard to take much away from those games.

I certainly came to take highly accurate passing for granted with 3 years of Peterson starting, going to an inexperienced QB this year is a bit hard on the eyes, a feeling I'm sure you'll become familiar with next year, when Scott finally departs.  He's fun to watch, but I won't miss him when the royals are the opponent.  I'll always wonder how far he could've taken a team that had a good defense.  Imagine him running this show on offense at a place like SJU, UST or BU...maybe this is the year?
8-) You are correct.

A fantastic post over on the WICA board.  All  I can do is quote:

I clicked over to check out the webcast of the LaCrosse game - and tuned in just in time to what appeared to be a fake field goal by St Thomas.  With a 51-7 lead in the 4th qtr, I think it was.

I was out of town this weekend attending a wedding of a family friend, so I had to miss the big SJU-BV match up.
I'm just getting caught up reading the stories in the SCTIMES-ONLINE and it appears that Nick Martin was accurate with his passing going 9 for 9. A confident #5 will do wonders for this offense. This team has a lot of ways to score and they will need them all this weekend at The Jake. CCM makes me the most nervous of any MIAC game nearly every year.

At the weeding,I was visiting with a former 2-time All American DT for SJU and we came up with the same conclusion. If he can stay healthy, Carter Hanson could be one of the all time great LB at SJU. The kid is a stud. He is like watching Brandon Novak play again, 16 years later and like Novak he could be in consideration for MIAC player of the year. Stay healthy and keep up the super freak defensive play.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Not sure if you noticed but the webcast camera caught Glenn Caruso just before the attempted fake field goal...
