MIAC Play of the Week voting:
http://www.miacathletics.com/sports/fball/2015-16/Play_of_the_Week/091415_fb_pow_week_2

1. Augsburg....fantastic play and catch considering they were going uphill...what the hell is up with the sideline camera angle.  I got a stiff neck and a bit of vertigo watching it.  I'm still not sure that Sonnenfeld got a foot down but it was an amazing grab.

2. GAC interception...nothing really special but still a nic catch by Jakes the linebacker for the Gusties.

3.  SJU fumbled snap for TD...could be a nominee for most inept play of the week.  What was the BV player doing putting his hand out?  He blocked the toss back to the punter?  Nice pickup by Hanson but nobody blocked him and the ball basically bounced into his hands.  Neat play but I'm not sure it's the play of the week.  I expected to see the "Immaculate Reception" TD catch by Clark and assist by Bungum.

4. St. Olaf...Great run by Strnad...I'd proably vote for this because the Oles need as much positive recognition as they can get this season!

Sigh.  Vikings suck.  Where have I heard that before?

And the worst, every friggin' sports fan in Australia is cheering for Jarryd Hayne and the 49ers.  That's just swell.  I am so looking forward to weeks of questions about how I must think that the '9ers are awesome, right?  About the only way that could be worse was if Hayne played for UST.

It's that time of the year for a little prognosticating concerning the MIAC.

Let's start with the non-conference record this year. Overall, the MIAC was 14 and 4 against all-comers and 13 and 4 against NCAA opponents. I cannot recall a recent past season where all the teams in the conference have completed their non-conference games in the first two weeks of the season. I for one think this is good for all teams for a number of reasons, many of which have been put forth here and elsewhere on the boards.

Now for the conference match-ups. I'll share my thoughts on the four games coming up to start the MIAC conference play. There is another place here on the boards if you want to get involved in point spreads and all that here: http://www.d3boards.com/index.php?topic=3607.3030 My intent here is to simply watch trends in teams from week to week and give a "gut reaction" to all that swirls around as the respective teams get ready to play one another in the upcoming weekend.

Carleton at Augsburg - If we were to simply look at the wins and losses columns of these two teams from the first two weeks of the season we might conclude that this will be a close game between two teams that are both starting the game with identical 1 and 1 records. But one does not have to look very deep to see that the Knights ride in to do battle at Edor Nelson Field against the Auggies without much hope of a victory. I hear coconuts as they approach the lair of the white rabbit.

The next match-up for the weekend is not much better of a game. Bethel visits St. Olaf for another battle of 1 and 1 teams after the non-conference games have been put in the record books. And like the first game I've mentioned above, this one does not look to be a close game - unless the Bethel offense only scores 2 touchdowns in the entire game again. My guess is that as soon as the game is in hand, that Coach Johnson will be putting in his freshman QB of Trey Anderson to get as many snaps as possible. This will keep the game from being as big a blowout as the Carleton Augsburg game. We'll see.

The third game this weekend is Gustavus at Hamline. These two teams both posted 2 and 0 records but if you look at the points for and the points against in those two games you see that Gustavus has scored almost twice as many points as Hamline has, while giving up 4 less. As much as I would love to see Hamline pull an upset in front of the home crowd this Saturday, I don't think it's going to happen. This might be a bellwether game, as they say, as it will tell us a bunch about how badly Hamline wants to get out of the cellar of the MIAC. If they can stay within a couple of scores of the Gusties, they will have done well.

The game of the week this week is definitely the Johnnies up at the Jake in Moorhead to take on the Cobbers. Most of us here on this board know that the Johnnies haven't beaten the Cobbers in quite some time. Travelling up I-94 for the game doesn't make it any easier either. This is one game that would be a hoot to be in attendance on in person, as the air will be charged with emotion as the two teams wrangle for a win. But I think this is the year that the Johnnies get that monkey off their back.

St. Thomas is idle this weekend.

A fantastic post over on the WICA board.  All  I can do is quote:

I clicked over to check out the webcast of the LaCrosse game - and tuned in just in time to what appeared to be a fake field goal by St Thomas.  With a 51-7 lead in the 4th qtr, I think it was.

4th and 7 at BVU29 Gunnar Anderson pass complete to Bowe Blatz for 9 yards to the BVU20, 1ST DOWN SJU, out-of-bounds (Justin Kahl).
1st and 10 at BVU20 Brice Johnston rush for 7 yards to the BVU13 (Jake Hansen).
2nd and 3 at BVU13 End of game, clock 00:00.

Typical classless Johnnies. 56 to 7 and they pass on 4th down. Then, instead of taking a knee, THEY RUN THE FOOTBALL. Rumor has it they did some trick play where the guard pulls and occupies the space abandoned by another lineman who is WORKING TO THE SECOND LEVEL! Unreal, 56 to 7 and they're blocking linebackers. Sickening. Is there anything Hollywood won't do?

There's always hope, just not much of a chance.

I'm excited/nervous to see how that kid does.  He was one of the top gets of their class, wasn't he?

He was, but he's been out of football since his Jr. year, and is playing behind what appears to be one of the weaker BU line's in recent years, so I'm trying to curb my enthusiasm a bit.  I'd prefer that he just get the start vs. Olaf...get comfortable out there rather than thrown to the wolves like he was vs. Wartburg.

edit - I know Haz is waiting in the wings with a more in depth analysis and his outlook on the offense...waiting patiently.

Carter Hansen won defensive player of the week and Josh Bungham wind Special Teams player of the week. The article at go johnnies.com didn't mention the offensive player. I assume it was a Tommie...

SIAP...But did Josh Parks leave the SJU Program.  I see he is not listed on the roster anymore.  Had high hopes for him in the future.
