Great article - could have used a bit about the origins (Ignatius O'Shaughnessy - seriously, they don't make names like they used to) of the Johnnies undying jealousy for all things UST, but otherwise solid.

I shared it with my former colleague (a Johnnie) and now client and recalled fondly our first meeting.  As but a young lad going to an on-campus interview after my first year of law school at that public school in Minneapolis, I noticed that one of my interviewers was a Johnnie.  As I entered the interview I shook hands with the young woman who would also be interviewing me, but hesitated to shake the Johnnie's hand, saying "I know I'm supposed to shake your hand, and I guess I have to, but it just feels really wrong since you're a Johnnie."  He laughed.  I was in.

Fortune favors the brave.  We are good friends to this day.  Whether purple or red, we are truly blessed to have attended such great schools and be part of such a "hate filled" rivalry.

Also: Two Johnnies walk into a bar and order Zimas.  Everyone laughs at them.  They don't get what's so funny.

For those who need a refresher (nor particularly well-written, but it gets the basic tale across): http://www.tommiemedia.com/news/oshaughnessy-the-man-the-myth-the-legend/

Every year further removed from graduation I realize that Johnnies and Tommies are more and more alike.  Granted I much preferred my experience going to school in a rural environment but at the end of the day we're all trying to date Bennies and file restraining orders against Tommie girls.

Couldn't resist a jab, but really, its a fun rivalry between two very similar groups of people.

There's a Tommie driving from St. Paul to Collegeville, and a Johnnie  driving from Collegeville to St. Paul.

In the middle of the night with no other cars on the road they hit each other head on and both cars go flying off in different directions. The Tommie manages to climb out of his car and survey the damage. He looks at his twisted car and says, "Man, I am really lucky to be alive!" Likewise the Johnnie scrambles out of his car and looks at his wreckage. He too says to himself, "I can't believe I survived this wreck!"

The Tommie walks over to the Johnnie and says, "Hey man, I think this is a sign from God that we should put away our petty differences and live as friends instead of arch rivals." The Johnnie thinks for a moment and says, "You know, you're absolutely right! We should be friends. Now I'm gonna see what else survived this wreck."

So the Johnnie pops open his trunk and finds a full unopened bottle of Jim Beam. He says to the Tommie, "I think this is another sign from God that we should toast to our new found understanding and friendship." The Tommie says, "You're damn right!" and he grabs the bottle and starts sucking down Jim Beam. After putting away nearly half the bottle the Tommie hands it back to the Johnnie and says, "Your turn!"

The Johnnie twists the cap back on the bottle and says, "Nahh, I think I'll wait for the cops to show up."

Why did the Tommie linebacker steal a police car?

He saw "911″ on the side and thought it was a Porsche.

Why don't UST(d) coeds like to make Kool-Aid?

Because they can't fit 8 cups of water into the little packet. ::)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the circus this weekend because my Mom is getting married (a long, Catholic service) on Saturday at one o'clock.  I am hoping to sneak in a few glimpses of the in game updates, but maybe sfury could make it easier for me by texting me all the important information.  As far as my new dad goes, I think this video clip sums it up best:

Warning:  There is some offensive language.

Is it safe to assume we all look down upon anyone who uses the word "rurple"?  There is a fine line between ESPN and other media outlets promoting the rivalry and "oh that's cute, they care about a meaningless lower division game".

DuffMan

QuoteAbout how the game has even spawned a new color -- "rurple" -- to describe the purple and red blend that fans create in the bleachers.

I have never, ever heard the term "rurple", and I hope not to.  I had to choke back some vomit just typing it.
