According to Coach Joe Lepsche's twitter page (https://twitter.com/CoachLepsche), it sounds like UST recently received a commitment from a solid recruit. Should be interesting to find out who he is.

In addition, Hunter Holmes, a sophomore punter from Arkansas State, appears to be making his way to UST next year: https://twitter.com/hunterh24/status/646485884775215105

They were 52 points behind last week, 19 points now. It'll certainly happen if St. Thomas can handle Bethel better than Wartburg did.

I honestly think this defense is better than any I've ever seen at UST. They've given up one first half touchdown through 5 games, and that TD was the result of a turnover on their own 29. I know we're only at the midway point, but this squad feels different.

I agree. I also think some of that is due to fewer turnovers by the offense and fewer penalties overall. It just seems like this year's defense is more discipline and consistent. Even compared to the 2012 team, I just get a better feeling each time they step on the field. Also, I've noticed that there appears to be fewer injuries this year compared to prior years. Not sure if they've changed things up in practice or if it's just luck. Probably a little of both.

I like how Lepsche's post refers to the recruit as a solid "leader." Speaking of leadership, I was in the Twin Cities last week and ran into a couple of guys at the local watering hole who've sent their kids to Caruso's summer camp the last few years. I asked if the camp was helpful and they all said that aside from football skills, their kids were taught invaluable lessons on leadership. Pretty cool.

As you're probably all aware, at Edor Nelson field you sit right behind the visitor's bench during the game, which I did Saturday and was able to pick-up on some of Caruso's leadership.  He has a special teams mat (about a 3 yd by 7 yd mat with ten purple dots on it - apparently the punter/kicker can't go on the mat) that before each special team's play those to go out on the field need to stand on, on their specific dot.  Needless to say, they never got called for too many men on the field.  The leadership those guys are learning to get on the right dot was impressive.

I think the leadership lesson there is "attention to detail."

I saw the mat as well and I wondered what it was. Looked like a Twister mat.

That's actually very typical for special teams. Bethel'so been doing it since at least the early 2000's. And we didn't invent that wheel.

Next thing you hear will be UST getting chastised because only DI programs use special teams mats. Or else it's that our mat has gold gilding...

I totally get it; counting to 10 is difficult.

UST used this mat when I played, as did my high school team. Also seen this mat employed by dozens of other teams. Usually the punt team lines up on it on 3rd down. Never see a team with that mat screaming for a guy getting a drink, then panicking as he scrambles to find his helmet, then some guy who doesn't know the position just runs out there as a stop gap. it's a damn fine mat.

Kind of surprised UST still only ranked 9th. Big road win at SJU, shut down an Augsburg team that gave Wartburg all they could handle. All I know is SJU should want UST to run the table, be ranked high and win every game big. I would put UST ahead of Wheaton, Wartburg (for sure) , Wesley and possibly UWO and UWW.

I'm surprised the Tommies didn't jump ahead of Wartburg, but maybe there's a silver lining to remaining outside the top tier. The team won't get cocky/rest on their laurels going into the latter half of the season. I'd much rather have the Tommies hungry, with something to prove entering the post-season (if they make it, of course). It's funny that, given the circumstances, the Johnnies wouldn't cheer for the Tommies. I'm not exactly a Johnnie booster, as is clear by my history on this board. However, I would cheer for the Johnnies if it helped the Tommies. Heck, I'd probably even head down to Salem if the Johnnies made it just to support the MIAC.

That's so out of character for GC I don't see how it could happen.
