I have a suspicion Fenske will replace Gould at some point for UST. This is based on nothing but gut instinct. He just seems to pop up on my Twitter timeline more. I realize it's in garbage time but in a close game I think Glenn will get antsy.

Ummm, yeah, Gould only threw for 293 of UST's 332 passing yds today. He's definitely trending towards a benching. With all of Fenske's yds in garbage time, how can Caruso not start him soon, if that 3:2 TD to INT ratio hasn't done it already  ;) 8-)

I'm not pretending to actually know anything. Was simply a comment that Fenske has been a name that pops in my timeline quite a bit. Never said anything about a trend from Gould but good story.

Glenn has made QB switches before. Gould struggled against the one quality defense UST has played. SJU couldn't do enough offensively to apply any pressure. If he does that later in the year it wouldn't be an unprecedented move. It's not like Fenske is some unknown. They liked him in camp.

I'm betting that there are some sore Gustavus receivers this morning.  SJU's DBs laid some punishing hits yesterday!

That was a fun game to watch, and it turned out about how I was expecting it to.  Good stuff!  The bouncy houses were a hit with my kids, too.  ;D

I'm dumbfounded that Dubuque throttled Wartburg yesterday!

Duff, or anyone else, were you at the SJU v Dubuqe game? I wasn't & from the parts of the stream I could watch they looked 2003 Crown College bad. I can't imagine any team could improve that dramatically over six weeks. .

What is the MIAC rule on "ball boys"? The reason I'm asking is that I've always seen the home team (kids or teenagers) act as the ball boys. Yesterday Gustavus had an adult (appeared to be in his 30's or 40's, full beard) in a warm up jacket with Golden Gusties on the back, acting as not only ball boy but in several situations appearing to send some sort of arm signals to the Gustie defense. He'd signal & the Gustie defense would adjust. It seemed weird and I don't remember seeing this type of thing in all my years of watching MIAC football.
Feel free to discuss or point out where this type of arrangement has been going on for years and I simply haven't noticed it.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

They were pretty bad. I haven't looked at the box score, but if their former D1 QB had a great game it could happen. But that doesn't explain their defense holding Wartburg offense in check.

I noticed and thought it was out of the ordinary, too, Section104.  Maybe we've just never noticed that from other teams.  Check if he's listed as part of their staff.  :o

Astonished and shocked. 45-9 was the Johnnies score.  The one thing in the stats from that game was that Dubuque had over 300 yards in offense.  I can't recall how much of that was in the second half once the game was out of hand.

Also interesting to look at the UW-Platville schedule and results to compare like opponents.  The Pioneers have crushed both Dubuque and Buena Vista and lost to UW-WW 17-7.

Maybe Dubuque has really turned things around.  Maybe Wartburg had a couple big injuries...who knows.

Noticed it too.  Maybe I'm just paranoid, but he also seemed to be standing close to one or another of the coaches most of the time. Very curious.

As for the game, Martin is always an adventure waiting to happen, but other than a couple of bad handles, he had a pretty solid game.  He's never going to be an All-American, but given the right play calls (which, being a football genius  ;) , I don't think he always gets) he can execute most of the time.  I think SJU has to work more on spreading the field, whether "bubble screen" type stuff, running wide, or passing.  Sura can get bottled up.  Some.  For a while.  But not most of the time!!  Thank God.

Bungum needs to touch the ball, one way or the other.

Simon didn't seem as much a factor yesterday as he has in some other games, but they are spreading it around more.  There's some decent receivers out there.

Again, another of my biggest concerns - the game is out of reach, the back-ups get some PT, and the Johnnies starting QB for next year, whoever it may be, gets no PT.  They have a senior back-up.  They've got to figger out a way to get Gunnar, or Alvord, or both at least a couple series in these out of reach games.    I'm all for "rewarding" Benson with some PT for being a part of the team for 4 years, but seems to me for the long haul, at least one of those underclassmen needs to see the field.

I liked the defensive game plans and formations yesterday.  They had nickel, dime and "quarter" packages out there and seemed to handle things pretty well for the most part.  Scary when Matuska went down, he needs to be out there IMHO.

Over and out.

I think UD's rigorous non-conference schedule (St. John's, Platteville, and Pacific) prepared them for IIAC competition and the likes of Wartburg.  If the Spartans win out and make the playoffs,  I fear that will be the end of it.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I have a hard time thinking that someone would cheat. I know it happens, but I have a hard time believing it.  It doesn't seem to do the GAC team any good that this guy is helping them.

Two observations:

1.  Nick Martin threw for 212 yards compared to Mitch Hendricks for 224.  If Martin can continue to sling the ball like that it could be a fun 4 weeks for the Johnnies.

2.  Pam the checkout lady at the Midway, St. Paul Target made me laugh this afternoon.  In front of me in line were two MAC football players (they were wearing football team gear).  Pam asked them if they won their game yesterday and they had a brief chat about their compelling affair with Beloit.
She then asked if they had any idea how U$T did?  One of the MAC boys said that U$T had beat Hamline by about 78-7.  The kid said that U$T year in and year out has a pretty good program.  That's about when Pam said...and I paraphrase, "They've got all that money."   For a moment I thought about getting involved in the discussion but decided to just leave it alone and chuckle to myself.
It's funny to me that she had that perception of U$T and was making that comment to two MAC kids when in fact the MAC endowment is almost twice as much as U$T's is.
