Bench and you other lawyers know this already, but I just hit me to do a google search on "person of interest".

There's a difference between a suspect and a person of interest. A person of interest is someone police want to talk to for information about a case; a suspect is somebody officers think may be involved in the crime, Bellevue police spokesman Greg Grannis said.

Anyway, fingers crossed this is the guy.  Or a buddy of the guy and he breaks now that they have leverage with the kiddie crime.

That's the technical difference between 'person of interest' and 'suspect', but police spokesmen often use 'person of interest' as a euphemism for 'suspect' (reduces the PR pain if it doesn't end up panning out).

It is interesting that the Johnnies have such a vivid recollection of this abduction. In October of 1989 I was already out of college and I was out of the country. I came back at the end of October and of course heard about it immediately. This case is close to home for you guys. I hope they have the right guy. I trust the UST Bench type guys will put him away for a long time where he might meet a premature demise.  I certainly can't remember  where I  was when I heard the news because the shock value had already passed.  As a parent it is heartbreaking to consider that the child porn problem is so large that you can actually google it. I find it very interesting and comforting  that the FBI and other agencies are able to nail these dopes through thier IP address.

The case has always been close for me.  I grew up in that area, Jacob would be a couple years older than I, and I know people that knew him.  It's always hit home with me, and now that I'm a father, it tugs at my heart-strings even more.  I really hope they can get some closure on it.

Similarly, it's hard to believe that nothing has ever come to light on Josh Guimond's disappearance from SJU in 2002.  I was at the party where he was last seen and lived in that housing complex.  I woke up the next morning to helicopters and a police dog searching our apartment.  It's chilling to think a person can disappear with no trace.  :'(

I thought the press conference was really weird - they refused to name him a suspect and didn't really give any information.  Hopefully they are sitting on something or else I don't know what the point of the press conference was.

Even if he's not the guy, he's still a royal scumbag.

I was 20 years old when Jacob was abducted and did not become a parent until I was about 31.  I honestly believe that his disappearance impacted how I parented my children.  I don't believe I'm over protective however I've been vigilant.  I also worry my ass off each time  the want to walk or bike a few blocks to a friends house.

At the time of the abduction I lived about 2 miles south of the young lad Duffman which I suppose is about 6 miles or so from St. Joseph. The company I worked for had offices all over the state so I made copies of the missing child flyer and mailed them to all of these places. Seems like everyone was doing whatever they could to help at the time.

To look at the artist's rendering of the suspect in 1989 and compare it to a picture of the guy in custody in 1990 they look very close. Hard to believe it's not him. Hopefully they have some hard evidence.

But like Duffman said, either way the guy is a royal scumbag.

And like faunch, my kids were born in the 1990's and I thought about what happened to Jacob every time they were out in the world without me or my wife.

Duff, google "Smiley Face Killer". I have a good buddy in the BCA up there and he is convinced there's something behind this. The number of college aged men who have gone missing in the MW and end up being found, deceased in a body of water is alarming.

I thought it was a weird press conference as well. Putting my own spin on it, it seems like the authorities think they have their man, but not really enough evidence to try him for that case. I think that is why they linked to the Wetterling case. We got a scumbag with a house full of kiddy porn, he's going away for a long time, and we think he's the guy who took Jacob, and by the way things look, may have done some other unthinkable things in the late 80's.

I've read the theory.  If it's true, it would break open a lot of cases.

Boys of Fall

Been off the board for a while, and know we can move to football soon, but a case like this overrides fun rivalries.  Like all you guys I hope this is the scumbag and they can tie him to the abduction.  Would be nice to bring closure to Jacob's family and friends.  I can't imagine the hell they've gone through.  Easier said than done in the everyday grind, but don't take the basic pleasures of family and friends for granted.

I got to know Patty Wetterling a little bit when she was running for Congress.  The sadness in her eyes when she spoke about Jacob was immense.  I pray that the arrest of this parasite will bring some kind of closure.  Won't remove the sadness but at least the family won't carry the burden of wondering what happened to their son and brother.
