I had to look no further than the St. John's game. If this was truly part of their game, where was the going for 2 and onsides in Collegeville? Because the risk outweighs the reward agaisnt a solid team...that why. Just like will in the playoffs. It will be the end of St. Thomas in the playoffs if they try that crap in the playoffs.

On sides kick in the first half of the Bethel game.  Bethel wound up scoring off it.

Also, 2pt conversation to go up 15-7 against Concordia in the second quarter two weeks ago. Lest we forget, UST used a fake field goal against Mount Union and scored.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good UST-ripping though.

Looking forward to Bethel coming in to Edor Nelson Field on Saturday, should be a good game. Will Tusler be ready to play?

OldAuggie, you are on the wrong day for Auggie talk....that is Tuesday-Friday. Sunday & Monday are reserved for ripping the UST coaching staff for their flexing their muscle against the Carls with trick plays..... ;)

I haven't heard anything on Tusler.  In a game where no playoffs are in the balance, and basketball season starts on Saturday, unless he's 100%, I doubt he'd play.

In response to Duff, we were sitting a few rows behind Anderson's family, and the trainer's diagnosis was suspected ACL tear.  Have to feel for a kid who rehabbed all off season from an ACL only to pop the other one (they were working on his un-braced knee on the trainers table, so I assume his brace was on the previously repaired on).  Perhaps Robbie Hummel could give him some encouragement.

Saw an article this week in the Carleton student newspaper suggesting that the football program should be cut due to its poor performance in recent history and lack of tradition/history. Curious to see if maybe that fires up the team at all today versus the Tommie's and the game ends up being closer than what I think we all are expecting.
I'm sure the writer of the article is gloating this today.

I was actually looking forward to this response! Well done.

A Hawthorn recruit, Alex Woodward, can't catch a break like that either.  Blew his knee in his first senior game, blew it again twelve months later in his first hard training session, blew it again twelve months later halfway through the season. He's working his third blown knee in two and a half years.

I just hope there isn't any traction in the administration for Carleton dropping football or asking to the leave the league like Macalester did.  I doubt this would happen but the Scots did set a precedent.  Being embarrassed in an 80-3 ass whooping isn't going to do much to garner support on campus for the Knights football program.  I don't believe they will do anything drastic but you never know. How tough would it be for the MIAC teams to schedule three non-conference games?

Honestly I don't get too caught up in the running up the score issue...sh-t happens.  Sometimes a team is just not good enough to compete and my guess is that Carleton pretty much had given up by halftime.
But there are things teams can do to mitigate the carnage.  Avoid the onside kick when up 30-3.  Pass up on the wide open receiver on the extra point and just kick the ball through for 1 point. Adjust tempo and run an extra 15 seconds off the clock between downs.
Just a couple weeks ago SJU was up on Carleton 42-0 at half and the game ended 56-0...and that game was in Northfield.  Could the Johnnies have put up 70 or more?  Probably.  For the record...on Saturday U$T was up 44-0 at half...could they have done some things to keep the score in the 60's?  Probably.

People like to comment that SJU has been known for running up the score and yes there have been a number of lopsided wins over the years.  Probably the worst in recent memory was opening day of the 2003 National Championship season against Hamline.  The final score was 74-7.  Did SJU run up the score?  I was at that game and really don't believe they did.  Hamline was just really bad and couldn't stop SJU in any way, shape or form.  The 2003 regular season ended in Collegeville against Crown College.  An opponent the Johnnies could have scored 80 or more on.  I didn't attend that game but if memory serves SJU scored on their first three possessions to lead 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.  At that point I think the starters were done and sat the remaining three quarters.  The game ended 50-0.  Over the final three quarters the SJU second stringers on down beat Crown 29-0.

BTW...there are some interesting comments over on the Startribune story related to the "Behind the Ass Pass" and for the record none of the comments are mine.  Not even the "classless" ones.
Lots of talk about U$T moving up divisions and many that believe the "play" was in poor taste.
There's even one daring the Tommies to take on Carleton in a Scrabble tournament.   ;D

Any fans of the movie Hoosiers on here?

I'm fine with running up the score. Not a betting man, but my preference is 63 - 7.

Of course this applies to SJU & Saint Gags vs. Hamline but not UST & GC vs. Carleton. Of course::) It's not like UST's 3-deep RB ran for 110 yards and 2 TDs behind the OL's 3s & 4s on nine touches.
