Mr. Ypsi

I have no dog in this fight, but some of the Tommie fan posts have been despicable.  Ever since the waning moments of the 2012 Stagg Bowl (REALLY - you're gonna attack the victory formation when down by THREE scores!!), I've wondered about the sportsmanship of UST.  The Carleton game confirmed my suspicions - the Tommies really DO have no class.  Yes, this is college, not U8 soccer, but c'mon.  That was a totally overmatched opponent and you couldn't resist rubbing their noses in it.  I doubt that Carleton can ever administer payback, but some teams can (and will).

Just ask Woody Hayes (if he were still alive).  In 1968 he went for two late in the game in order to beat Michigan 50-14.  He succeeded in getting the Michigan coach fired - they hired some guy named Schembechler.  In 1969 Woody had 'the best team I ever coached' - Michigan 24, OSU 12.

Acting like arrogant assholes if problematic, 'cause karma's a bitch! :o

There is NO excuse to justify some of the plays UST ran against Carleton - none.  (And I dare you to run some of those plays against UWW, Linfield, etc.)

I saw the behind the back pass play on channel 9 sports and thought it a bogus thing to do on a football field regardless of the score.

Looked like something we would do at St. Augustine Elementary during recess when I was in 6th grade.

What was the point? Not like the Tommies would use this in a competitive game it would get picked off and maybe housed the other way. No opponent is going to spend time practicing to defend it so why do it.
Yes. This.  Nothing to do with red tinted glasses. I am no Johnnie fan. Not by a long shot. That play was the single stupidest play I have ever seen on a football field. No film value. No value in getting better. Is there one single Tommie fan that has the guts to tell the truth on this board? There was one single and obvious reason for the Tommies to run that play. And that was to embarrass the other team. That's it. Period. And I get it that some Tommie fans are OK with that. Just having fun? That's a bunch of crap. Playing football already is fun.

So why not man up and tell the truth? "We did it to embarrass the other team and we are ok with that.  We did it because we can.  This is big boy football and that's how we roll. We could care less if anyone else likes it. If you don't like it, beat us."

My opinion? The Tommies don't respect their opponents and they don't respect the game.  They will get theirs. And it's not just Johnnie Nation that will enjoy that day.
Go back a few pages and you'll see that several of us were among the first to state the obvious and reject the "get it on film" defense.

Ypsi -- you're picking two games three years apart and making a really tenuous connection. You watched that Stagg Bowl? Perhaps you remember how UST scored its touchdown.

Now, I don't remember the specifics of the last game vs. Linfield, although I called it, and I did not see the UWW-UST game in person, but maybe Mount Union qualifies as a strong opponent.

Hello it has been some time (years ) since Ive been on this board.  A couple of comments about CSTs trick play v Carlton.

SJU is not totally innocent of the same sort of deal-1993:  vs Carleton 70-7.  SJU went for 2 leading 68-7
That being said...

Carleton and SJU were undefeated going into that game and as I recall there was some smack regarding SJUs potent offense vs Carletons and I think it was a sort of a "teach you a lesson not to shoot your mouth game"

That being said...

The play highlights the enormous difference in current coaching philosophies between the humble leader (Fasching) and the self indulgent arrogance (Caruso).

SJU backed off the dogs early in the third and i don't think there 1 more time.  UST meanwhile scores on at least 2 pass plays in addition to the fake FG.

It will be interesting to see how seedings go, but I would love to see a SJU-CST rematch in playoffs in St Paul

Also, there has been some comments on the board about Carletons and MAcs ability to compete.  I think witht he right coaching, recruitment and chemistry they can.  They have demonstrated it historically (Mac in 80s) and Carleton in 90s and even bit under Ramler.  So it isn't inconceivable

I often find myself wondering if he's friends w/ Carl Gerbschmidt. They are respective diehard Bears & Packers so maybe not.

Carl Gerbschmidt lives about 8 miles from me in Elk Mound. He and Chicago Tommie are separated at birth twins, brothers from another mother or one of those damn things.

The difference is Chicago Tommie has enough cash in his pocket at any one time to pay off most people's mortgages. Carl Gerbschmidt on the other hand has a balance due at the Elk Mound Municipal Liquor store.

Rejected, but not with any facts of course. I looked for you on Monday when there was an opportunity to ask the coaching staff directly about this horribly controversial two point conversion. Didn't see you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are you saying that Gerby is a real person, or that you're under the impression that he's a real person?  I've always been under the impression that he's  just a character played by someone at the station, most likely Chad Abbott.

Hey guys,

Been on vacation. Did UST do something to disrespect the moral fabric and holy unwritten rules of the mighty game of FOOTBAWWWW?!

I bet I know what it is, they forget to bow to their opponent. Or did they forget to purify the playing surface and offer up their palms to their opponent and the gods to show they have no weapons or proverbial tricks up their sleeve?

Ugh. I just wish we could go back to the days of being 6-4 and having a 117 year old man calling our plays.

G and B, Carl is as real as you want him to be. One only has to climb to the top of Elk Mound to understand. When heading down I-94 you go right by it.

To the point about Carleton and Mac.  I didn't mean they couldn't compete.  Clearly at times they were able to.  It's just a lot harder with the academic aspect of finding the athletes to compete at the level UST is at.  Can they be competitive sure.  Will they challenge for a conference title?  Highly unlikely.  Now MAC did probably do the smart thing and joined a league that was similar in their abilities and they already have a conference title there.  At the same time it's not on par with the MIAC which is perennially one of the top conferences in D3.
