And just because it suits my mood:

The Hanson Brothers take the ice.

I'll do you one better...Irish people watch American football for the first time.

CT will enjoy seeing Cutler being called the saddest man they've ever seen.  I guess some things never change!   ;D
Maybe if the Bears just got better at destroying other teams, physically and mentally or ran a few gadget plays?  :P

Who the hell else were they going to hire?  No AD and a university administration in shambles.  Did you listen to Barreiro and Mason today?  As much as I hate to say it the only logical candidate other than Claeys would have been Mason.

faunch, you are being very short sighted. You do have a good point about the university's athletic administration being in shambles but, there are several qualified candidates within the state that would love that $1.4M contract as well as Craig Bohl,I'm sure he could get out of his Wyoming gig, he's making about $875K there. The U just broke ground on The Athlete's Village and we can be pretty certain it won't have any football players living there but plenty of Women's Hockey & Volleyball players......
Time will tell, but I fear that we will look back & be waxing nostalgic about the Mason years  :o

Ok...let's play around with this bit:

Candidates in state: Todd Hoffner, MN St. Kato, Glenn Caruso, U$T and ?????????  This isn't much better than Gerry Faust at Notre Dame.  Both of them are in the middle of a season and potential championship run and although they've both been to a ncaa championship game haven't won one yet.  Please give me one more that isn't named Grant or Ramler because I can't of anyone other than BU's Johnson that have had any success at the college level.

Bohl would be a great hire but I don't know if he would be successful at the U of M.  It's a lot easier to get players in at NDSU and Wyoming than it is at the University of Dinkytown.

And I don't think GC is looking outside of U$T for a job unless he won a D3 championship and a great FCS opportunity came calling.  I have no factual information but I would guess that U$T is compensating him very well...somewhere between $80 and $100K just to be sure that he won't leave for something better.  Someone please prove me wrong.

Craig Bohl is 1-9 this year, soon to be 1-10. No thanks. Claeys has solid commitments from the best recruiting class in many years. The U has to give him a chance to see if they can turn it around. If Claeys fails to do so then the new AD will make a change. It was the only way to go other than setting back the program a couple more years and starting over with recruiting for the upcoming signing day. Considering all the HC openings this year we would not be looking at a great crop of available coaching candidates. C'mon, give Big Country a chance.

D3football.com has published their first bracketology. I'll steal no thunder, it's quite a good article, except to say this: they have done this board no early post-season favours but they are projecting the most supercharged Staggbowl that has ever and may ever be played if the MIAC teams keep winning.

Curt Wiese UMD.
Clayes might turn out to be the guy but without even attempting to search for someone else is surprising. However, the structure of his (Clayes) buyout is favorable to the U, so when a new AD is hired he/she can get rid of Clayes on the cheap if next year is as bad as the way this year appears to be headed.

When Wisconsin hired Paul chryst, I told my badger friends that Bucky missed a chance to join the arms race in big ten coaching. As long as jim harbaugh and urban Meyer are in the big ten, those programs will be the alpha dogs. That is not to say other programs can't be competitive, but the reality is that with all the new dollars flowing into FBS football, certain programs have made a calculated decision to go all in with $5mill+ plus coaches to position themselves at the top of the pile.

Nowhere is it written that the U of MN can't be a top tier football program. They have a nice on campus stadium, they have a good in state recruiting base and a population center/alumni base that could support a top level program. With this move to hire Claeys, they have chosen a different path. I am not faulting them per se, but it is quite a leap of faith to say that Tracy Claeys can lead the program to the top of the big ten given the new landscape.

I agree with you on almost everything. However I don't think the U could have hired a Big Dog without an full time AD. Beth Goetz could very well be that AD in the future but for now she is the interim AD. I watched Harbaugh on the sidelines at the Michigan game and he is Alpha for sure. Protesting every call with intimidating methods. I saw him running down the field trying to influence the referees, all that stuff that Kill did himself but Harbaugh is on a different level. I am sure Urban Meyer is the same. I am not sure Claeys can do that but we really have no choice. We would be at least 7th in line for a big dog coach this year and until the new facilities are built I don't think we would attract anyone of that caliber. We would also likely lose the great class of recruits that are committed to the U and I know that is shortsighted but Kill has the ball rolling in one direction. We need to see if Claeys can keep it going. Reusse today says that Claeys is cut from the same cloth as Mike Zimmer. I hope he is right.

Just for the record I will be the first to congratulate the new AD if he/she decides to change the coaching staff due to poor performance. I agree there is no reason the U of M can't get back to the top tier of the Big Ten. I want to see them win.

I hope this turns out as projected. Not that there's any easy road, but assuming the brackets look exactly like this (I know ass-u-me) the Johnnies would have a "relatively" easy road to the Semis.

One thing that intrigues me in the Top 25 Poll, is that UWO is ranked above UST. St Thomas has wins by greater margins over some good MIAC teams, while UWO hasn't put up big numbers against the good teams in the WIAC. The reason must be that they beat UWW, while UST "only" beat SJU. That presumes that UWW is as good as they have been lately. It's a kind of incestuous assumption. I guess we will see what happens when/if SJU or UST plays Platteville or Oshkosh or UWW.

I wonder if the Platteville backers are thinking the same thing; at least to the qtrs. ;D
